CHOPIN Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, op. 11
Uladzislau Khandohi was born in Minsk, Belarus, to a family of musicians-dulcimer players. When his parents noticed him picking out melodies on the piano at the age of 7, they took him to music school, where he progressed quickly; he won his first grand prix (at the Mendzelevskaya Open City Competition for young pianists in Mogilev) at age 10, and the first prize of the Sviridov Competition for Young Performers in St. Petersburg a year later.
In 2013, he entered the Republican Music College of the Belarusian State Academy of Music, after which he became a laureate of many international competitions, including first-prize wins at Kazakhstan’s International Astana Piano Passion Competition; International Nutcracker Television Contest; and International Sviridov Competition. In 2016, he reached the finals of the Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition in Salt Lake City and recorded his first solo album.
Now 20, Uladzislau has performed in Belarus, Russia, Spain, Italy, and France. He has studied with Natalia Trull at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory since 2020. He most recently won the 2021 editions of the Ferrol International Piano Competition in Spain and the Sanremo International Piano Competition in Italy.

It’s shocking to see that only one person played the Chopin 1 at the finals, if I remember correctly. Great performance, though!

Listen to the last movement by Bruce Liu (the winner of the 2021 Chopin Competition), and you’ll see Khandohi’s chopin is lacking sparkle and clarity.
Khandohi may be great in Rachmaninoff, but not in Chopin.

@@trifonovfan9819 Of course I have! Bruce and Lim are my favorite pianists and I’m a huge fan of both of them. And I understand that Khandohi may not be so great in Chopin. It was still an enjoyable performance overall, however.

I think that there might have been some Chopin fatigue, given that it’s not far removed from the last Chopin Competition.

@@trifonovfan9819 furthermore, some of the runs in the first movement were cut off, the ending was indistinguishable, it was hesitant. I liked his interpretation but he was not up to the task for a contest of these characteristics. I would pay to see it, definitely.

Vladislav - you are the best!!! It's a pity that comments were hidden during the live broadcast of the final. And your video appears a few days after the end of the contest. A good question for the organizers?!

the coda was heavily lackluster for me on this performance; his lack of power and depth here became apparent during the last 90 seconds of the piece. This section is noted “brilliante” in the score, so the pianist would presumably slow down, play out, give it a grand feeling, and include a vast dynamic range during this last minute or so. Instead of taking the listener through a grand (but still humble) finale, the pianist does the opposite here. Still a very fine performance, despite all of this.
Also, Alsop was much better here than the first two performances. Excellent job with the orchestra.

@@user-be8mk2qi2e somewhat agreed. i think it’s great to listen to and reminds me of trifonov. i just don’t think such an ending holds much interpretive value.

The orchestra is so good. The pianist sounds a bit tired. Too much rubato. Lack of power
