Gurkha warriors' tough journey to become British Army sappers comes to an end

- More than 30 Nepalese men, some of them teenagers, left home to join the British Army and one year later, their journey is at an end.
Despite joining the Armed Forces at a dangerous time in terms of global security, the 32 men from Nepal strived to become Gurkha Combat Engineers, earning the respect of their commanders twice over.
"It was hard, but we got it done anyway," recounted one Gurkha soldier.

I was wondering how they fitted into the army structure - are they principally Gurkha or RE?
Mostly Gurkha Royal Engineers are part of 36 regiment royal engineers. Generally Gurkhas stay in majority Gurkha units but the unit will provide the same role as any other army unit.

@@isaymymind1727 Unfortunately not, Gurkha veterans have been on hunger strikes to fight for equal pension. The British government only pays them a third compared to their British counterparts.

This forest is near me. I often see them out whilst I'm walking my dogs, they use the area for film making too, you never know what you are going to see on a dog walk! I always give the guys an appreciative nod whilst I'm out and make sure they don't have to crawl through my dogs poo!

I'm sure the young Gurkhas' language training included "monumentous"!
Crazy idea. Hire a higher percentage of Gurkhas. Put them in separate brigades. We can do with all the talent we can have right now. This isn't the 70s. Oh and we need to be spending more time using fpvs for a start. None of this stuff costs money which seems to be a priority because beta politicians aren't wired to have protective instincts or something... Your guess is as good as mine.
To hire more the standard has to decrease. Also, the Royal Gurkha Rifles are already separate from the Rifles.
They had stationed in Hong Kong before 1997. They helped to patrol the border in order to prevent the I.I. from the mainland.
Were they the gurkhas though? The ones before were from India.. British Indias, is who I thought they were.... and these gurkhas are from Nepal though. Different areas.

there is Gurkha's in the SAS and they are fine troopers.
Some Ghurkas have passed special forces selection.
There have been a few.
You need to do more research before posting. There's an article from The Mirror 'Gurkhas join the SAS as Nepalese fighters pass selection for Britain's elite special forces' from 2015 that talks exactly about that.

How do you propose they do that?
We dont need Gurkhad amy more we have the first battalion the civil servants, the second battalion the gay gordons and the third battalion the muslim army.

The Gurkhas have been part of the Brirish Army for quite a time, they fought against them and were so impressed with their fighting prowess the Brits incorporated them into the British Army. They actually celebrated their 200th anniversary in 2015.
@@kutter_ttl6786 Historical association isn't much of an answer. The post-war rationale for the continuation of Gurkhas in the British Army was for colonial duties east of Suez; with the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, they were left without a strategic role.
With all the developments regarding Gurkha pay and pension equality, it would make sense for the bean-counters of the MoD to consider the extra expense and language difficulties that recruiting in Nepal brings. I know the Gurkhas are great soldiers, but do they deliver more than a British soldier to justify that extra expense?
Or is there some diplomatic advantage or a role suited to non-British troops to justify it? There's far more to it than tradition.

Don’t make insults because they have their techniques in jungle warfare which was the benefit in the Korean and Malaysian wars but not air combat etc
