  • South Korea just officially unveiled the first prototype of their KF-X fighter jet program. From now on, it is to be known as KF-21. For more about the fighter jet and its future, do watch our newsflash video.
Correction: The video states that the nickname of the plane translates to "young eagle". A better translation would be "young hunting falcon".

Boramae does not mean young eagle. A better translation for Boramae is "young hawk".
Specifically, Borame refers to a hawk that is captured and bred for hunting that is less than 1 year old.
Boramae has a special trait in that it will fearlessly hunt prey many times its size.

So this plane is supposed to have a 50% greater range than the f-16... if that is true then the US should consider ordering this plane... though that might actually mean the US order fighters would be built under license by a US company, depending on South Korea's Production capacity. I know people have been joking about how this plane is a baby raptor, but think about it for a second, from an intelligence and deception perspective, that is actually a major plus. These could be deployed and enemy intel might mistake them for the Raptor causing them to react differently. Plus if it performs as advertised it would fill the requirements the US is looking to fill with the hypothetical f-36 Kingsnake, and the US wouldn't need to spend money on development and it could get a more advanced fighter to replace the f-16.

For the first block, the kf-21's target is to outperform F-16. Hence, though its stealthy design, KAI won't spend their money on stealth technology. This humble goal can easily reduce maintenance cost, which is horrific for F35 to keep itself stealthy. The goal for the final block is to build a full stealth fighter, which may have a lower RCS than F35, relatively close to F117.
The whole plans are well organized as step-by-step improvements. But, this plane is only a prototype. Hence, there will be tons of bugs to be fixed. KF-16 just made one small step for obtaining the true MINI Raptor title.

Given the limited production run, I am not sure that it will result cheaper than the F-35a (though, if one looks at operational availability and per-hour costs it may still be cheaper than the Lockheed).

It is modest suggestion: it does not promise much, but will deliver what it promised without fail. It has similar design philosophy trait like F-16 Viper or French Mirage fighter. It is NOT jack-of-all-trades F-35 or versatile and charming Euro Typhoon or king of the hill F-22. It is simpler and cheaper than cutting-edge F-35 fighter but modern enough to keep up with future advance in fighter technology. It is designed to replace aging fleet of F-16's (and F-4 Phantom and F-5) with comparable operating cost. It will be daily workhorse of Korean air force.

Indonesia has troubles funding the project because there is a debate going on. Some elements in the government want a fighter that is partially indonesian built like the KFX-IFX, the parliament wants F15EX, the defense ministry wants the F35 or Rafale, some others want more F16s, and the airforce wants Sukhoi. So, it is a very hard debate. Me personally, i would go with the airforce's choice, but the KFX looks good too. We should never get the overpriced F35 and F15.

it may depend on when Indonesia needs fighters, KFX would be available after 2030. if Indonesia wants to increase airforce power immediately, Probably F-16V would be a good choice. We have been using MiGs and Sukhois for much of our history, buying SU 35 would be much easier because we have enough trained pilots and mechanics for SU 27 and SU 30 already, and we would be less dependent on the west.
