I think frank ocean has one of the best ways to express sadness to the world. I was and still having a dark time in my life. I felt confused and saddened by all the sh*t I am /was going through. Whenever I listen to this song, I remember my older brother when he was struggling in a bad spot. He just got out of college. Not because he finished his degree, but because he dropped out. It was such a devastating blow for him, especially when he spent countless hours in high school to make honor roll, be part of extracurricular, yet he failed. Not to mention his girlfriend broke up with him within that same time. I still remember the night he cried out his heart and soul when she told him the news. He decided to get a job. It was at Chuck E. Cheese. Within 5 months he quit. Don't know why exactly, but I would understand if it was a shitty place like that. For the next 2 years, all he did was hangout with highschoolers, drive around a car he didn't own, get drunk and smoke with minors, and would still have the audacity to ask, or rather demand my mom for money. Later we find out he's had 2 kids with 2 different girls. His whole situation was fucked. He wasn't going to school. He wasn't working. He spent money he didn't have. He was surrounded by people who didn't give a shit about him. And on top of all that, he had children that needed child support. I was mad at him, furious. But really in my core I was just sad. Unbelievably sorry for him that sometimes I would break down and cry about my brother that I look up to. But now I couldn't be more proud of him. He stopped his reckless partying. Whenever I listen to this song, I remember my older brother when he was struggling in a bad spot. He just got out of college. Not because he finished his degree, but because he dropped out. It was such a devastating blow for him, especially when he spent countless hours in high school to make honor roll, be part of extracurricular, yet he failed. Not to mention his girlfriend broke up with him within that same time. I still remember the night he cried out his heart and soul when she told him the news. He decided to get a job. It was at Chuck E. Cheese. Within 5 months he quit. Don't know why exactly, but I would understand if it was a shitty place like that. For the next 2 years, all he did was hangout with highschoolers, drive around a car he didn't own, get drunk and smoke with minors, and would still have the audacity to ask, or rather demand my mom for money. Later we find out he's had 2 kids with 2 different girls. His whole situation was fucked. He wasn't going to school. He wasn't working. He spent money he didn't have. He was surrounded by people who didn't give a shit about him. And on top of all that, he had children that needed child support. I was mad at him, furious. But really in my core I was just sad. Unbelievably sorry for him that sometimes I would break down and cry about my brother that I look up to.
But now I couldn't be more proud of him. He stopped his reckless partying. He stopped being sorry for himself. He's making nearly 6 figures a year with a job he loves, and a proud father of 2 kids. If you see this comment, just know that I'm incredibly happy for you. I love you, bro.
