I spent 31 years, 7 months and 8 days in the U.S. Army. I wanted to be a pilot because the movie TopGun changed my life, or the way I looked at life anyway. I spent my last 22 years of service as a helicopter pilot, fought in 3 wars, 4 Air Medals, 1,390 combat hours. I’m older now, my glory days have been modified and most don’t know anything about my past. When I see any TopGun and now Maverick clip I just smile and my eyes water up. I’ll never again be that hungry kid that gave everything he had to make it, but I was a soldier once.

I love Warlock's character. He's an old timer like Maverick but hung up his wings for promotions. He did however fly at the same time as Maverick wrote his legend, and you can tell Warlock has a hell of a lot of respect for Maverick's abilities and is very curious to see if the man lives up to the legend up close. Maverick is reminding him of his cock-sure pilot days, riding his plane and his rank on the edge. You can see it in Warlock's eyes as Maverick does the training run, he's living it in his own head as a pilot, living vicariously through Maverick. No doubt he wished he was his younger self again in that moment, for the chance to fly the mission, to be part of The Legend, not just on the sidelines watching it happen in real time. But, he's mature and seasoned enough to not let that get the better of him, so he is just happy to see Maverick doing his thing and providing what support he can from where he is.
A Top Gun: Warlock film would be a wonderful expansion on this universe, especially if Tom Cruise has creative control. I can absolutely see a scene where one of Warlock's superiors tells him "They're called Orders, Warlock" after he pulls some attitude over what he thinks is a shitty reassignment.

What makes Maverick such a good officer is that he's a maverick: he's always thinking outside the box of rigid military mentality. When I was a young Ensign onboard a DDG as the Strike Warfare Officer, I had a Senior Chief that was much the same way, always putting the men and outcomes before procedure. He taught me that the easiest way to follow orders and accomplish the mission was to simply take care of the guys in the Division and trust in them.
With his assistance as well as all of the guys in the Division, including my other Senior Chief, we built the best Strike Warfare team in the Battlegroup and were designated as the lead shooter ("Greyhound") and the Joint Task Group theater control ship ("Bravo Bravo"). It put a lot of stress on the team during deployment, and we worked some really long days, but they never failed to make me proud.
It was one of the best jobs I've had in my life. Things move at a much slower pace for me now, and I'm grateful for that, but I still look back on those days fondly. I'm still using those lessons that my Senior Chief taught me, some 20 years later.

I just noticed the exhaust vents on the Super Hornet at 3:46 right by the back end of the cock pit ... I remember that design change and going up to Le Moore to watch them being installed. It was concerning because they protruded beyond the OML of the plane so we were thinking it would compromise the radar signature.
