Let me put y’all onto some game, I’m a paramedic been one for 6 years. In a way we’re the gateway to the mental health aspect of 911 services people are asking for, people call 911 we show up we find a way to get the patient to the hospital to speak with mental health experts and have access to social workers at the hospital. Trust me when I tell you, you don’t want to go to these kind of calls without the police. Assaults in my department have gone up exponentially and the question is always “Where were the police when the EMTs and Paramedics are getting assaulted”. A coworker was murdered by a person with psychiatric problems a couple years ago when she had her ambulance stolen and she was dragged for blocks by this “sick” person. RIP Yadira Arroyo, her murderer still hasn’t been sentenced to this day and the defense is claiming insanity to keep this career criminal out of a prison.

...but what do you do when folks are calling for someone that can offer some kind of mental assistance to their son, and the only folks who show up are the police? Three times in a row? Who then stand there laughing at him during the time while he's snapping out? Especially when it's noted that when his mother called 9-1-1 she specifically asked for an ambulance for her son.
You know when the ambulance showed up?
After the police had already shot and killed him and after he was put into a police car and taken to the hospital where he died.
If it wasn't for it raining here in Philly, his blood would still be on the ground.
If you are afraid to do the job that you signed up to do...
...then your ass needs to quit that job and go get another one.

Paramedics are not allowed to come on a scene with a guy wielding a KNIFE. The scene is NOT safe. Police would have been called anyway.

If his family knew the brother had mental problems and he's done this shit before, he should have gotten him help long before this situation happened. In this climate, his folks should have known when they said he was black, unstable and possible weapon police were coming to brutalize if not kill him. If you know your loved one has mental/emotional issues, help them get treatment.

I agree that we need to focus on the victims and how we can work together to spread awareness and prevent these kinds of situations, but to say that looting doesn't matter whatsoever is dumb. Someone did lose their life, which is horrible, but when you destroy and loot buildings and businesses, you're destroying people's livelihood, and during a pandemic where it's tough making ends meet, is almost as horrible, if not equally horrible, as well.

Yeah, I was an EMT... Scene safety is the first priority. If the subject is OBS and having an episode cops are definitely on the scene first to clear it. If that man kills someone with that knife, and the cops are on the scene, they will be blamed for that. Sorry, but the family has to take that loss (yes a taser may have been a better solution, if that was an option), but as you've seen in other videos tasers are not 100%.

And the reports I’ve read and the video, tasering wasn’t an option because both officers got split up during when being chased by the guy with the knife, non lethal can only be used if both officers are together so one can use the taser but if it fails the other officer can cover him with lethal fire.

This happened to me and my family.
We called the paramedics to help take my brother who was having a mental breakdown to the hospital. He wasn’t violent at all. They came with 4 police officers and I was so scared. I asked why they brought police. They said it was protocol for the paramedics safety. These police just needed to stand down. The family was there to assist. This man should still be alive.
This man was known to be violent. His mom and gf were abused by him. You want paramedics to come and be stabbed instead?

As far as I'm aware no paramedics will respond to a scene without police if the person is being threatening especially if they're waving a weapon around like a knife.

As a counselor who works in psych hospitals with people who are brought in by terrified police officers who clearly have no clue what they are doing (usually making non-violent patients violent) this is sickening. This is exactly why counselors, social workers, and other trained personal with masters degrees in mental health need to be responding to these situations. WE KNOW HOW TO HANDLE VIOLENT PSYCH PATIENTS! I literally de-escalate violent situations daily 🤦🏻♀️

Did not know EMTs were like the swat.. The entire family could not constrain the armed/dangerous individual, what were the EMTs supposed to do? A stab can be fatal, trying to subdue someone hand to hand with a knife can be a death sentence. No innocent EMT nor cop should put their life in danger. Shame on HIS family for letting him down then blaming the cops.

When one dials 911, asks for an ambulance, and yet the cops show up...That's a sure sign the police have become an insignificant entity to the neighborhood.
Obviously, people have finally learned to specifically request real assistance over a hit squad.
@Nia X Medics are trained to arrive on scene whether it's violent or non-violent. Many have called 911 for medical assistance and the only vehicle to arrive other than an Ambulance was a Fire engine. This was the fourth time they were called that day so they knew the deal. It's more than likely the medics notified the police.
So who's going to protect the abulance workers or mental health workers if they are charged by a person with a knife with a mental health problem

Talk about all these thugs in the neighborhood who needed to go take the knife from him instead of calling police. Since they can give the police so much advice then they need to use their advice and resolve these problems. No body is going in a situation with a knife but armed police and they are using their weapon in a threat.
