Robert Townsend said the initial story of the Five Heartbeats was based on The Temptations as he interviewed Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin while he was coming up with the script. Once he sold the script the studios told him that he couldn't use The Temptations story because somehow Motown and the studio was under the same production umbrella and the President said they could get sued. So Robert Townsend went to a show that ft The Dells talked to them about and used them instead. In all actuality most of those groups had gone through the same thing so it worked out. But there's much of the Temptation story in 5 Heartbeats
