Fun fact! Caterpillars retain some degree of memory after being liquefied during metamorphosis. Some sick twisted scientists tested this by hurting caterpillars while a tone played and after being reduced to primordial goo in the chrysalis to become a butterfly, they still freaked out when the tone played. So they do have some idea of what's going on sometimes! Just a fun science fact
Most scientists: "How can we improve the human condition?"
That one guy: "CAN WE TRAUMATISE TINY BUGS?"

Well, it probably needs to remain in one piece, and solid.
Unless...?"
Later:
"So it turns out that brains do not need to be solid to remember things."
Wait do caterpillars actually get reduced to primordial soup in the chrysalis? I thought they retained some semblance of form inside, also insect brains are already weird nervous system wise
@@SignalRaptor_ basically, the caterpillar forms its chrysalis essentially “shedding its skin” in a sense, and from there it releases enzymes that literally dissolves unneeded muscles, organs, and it’s digestive system, leaving behind basically only essential functions like airways, some of its brain, and a few other cells. it then starts making these disks that use the nutrients from the digested caterpillar to create their new form, and the cycle is complete. so yes, if you caught it at just the right point and sliced it open you would find primordial soup, but technically it doesn’t dissolve everything in its entirety.
There’s actually theories that insects can have genetic memories so there’s a chance that caterpillar knows exactly what’s going on and still chooses not to be a bee keeper because caterpillars are menaces to society

Brian’s really metamorphosed since leaving Polygon
He is the one unraveling now
Metamorphosed...like a caterpillar?
Very Kafkaesque.
This song really spoke to me.
I believe this ballad represents humanity’s core elements; elitism, growth, and pointlessness. Both the caterpillars and Brian represent a different part of humanity’s struggle.
On the one hand there’s Brian, who believes he is superior to these beings known as “caterpillars”. We can tell this based on the verse where he criticises caterpillars for being unable to perform basic human tasks such as long division. This symbolises humanity’s desire for superiority, and their general elitist mindset and disregard for other species.
On the other hand, the caterpillars symbolise both pointlessness and growth. It is stated that caterpillars don’t know where they are going and where they are from, and this general cluelessness means they are without purpose. This directly aligns with humanity’s constant search for knowledge, and our inability to have definitive proof of our origins or where we go after death. Despite this, the caterpillars show that happiness can be found in pointlessness, and that growth is possible in any condition. Despite their lack of knowledge of their surroundings and their general vulnerability, the caterpillars are happy to eat and sleep.
Finally, the caterpillars indicate a desire to become something more. They metamorphasize and Brian indicates his frustration that he can’t do the same through his attempts to compare himself to the caterpillars.
Brian and the caterpillars, though seemingly conflicting points of view in existence itself, are both an allegory for the human condition and how if we seek satisfaction it will never be found. These comparisons lead me to see this video as the great piece of literature that it is.
Too bad this video is not a metaphor.

@@sneepsnoop8639 I didn't at first, but the moment I saw your reply, I realized immediately.
What's reason #69? The world must know!
When you think about it, who has got it worse? The worms. The worms have got it worse. But they get out of bed everyday.
This song is holds real value to me as a commentary on society’s denigration of childish behavior. The caterpillar is a symbolism for children and childhood (the specific of it being a caterpillar could be an allusion to The Very Hungry Caterpillar or the caterpillar beginning at the first stage of its metamorphosis). it “doesn’t know what’s goin’ on,” it’s “dopey as heck,” and Gilbert says that he doesn’t know why we respect it, all in what I think is an attempt to convince himself that society’s distaste for childishness is justified.
He cites this ability to write petitions, do long division, and pay with a check as reasons for his superiority to the caterpillar, as well as the fact that he can do what the caterpillar can (eat leaves, climb trees). He neglects to mention that, unlike many things in an adult world, the caterpillar, and the child, do not do things primarily to reach a desired end (I feel it is appropriate to assign desire and emotion to the caterpillar as he also personifies it in the song), but for the enjoyment of it. The world of a child is simple and usually very happy, in stark contrast to the adult world Gilbert is in.
At the end of the song, Gilbert says that he believes he will become a beekeeper. I believe this occupation is a metaphor for dealing with the struggles of the adult world in modern society. He does not run from the bees, though. He *keeps* them, and in a way, relies on them. The struggles of adulthood and the struggle of any worker under capitalism are unpleasant, but it is hard to reject them fully. He cannot run from the bees as a child would, so he keeps them close, permanently integrating them into his life. This is why he rejects the caterpillar, why he calls us to not respect it: he is too deep in the struggles of his life to admit that it could ever be different. This is why he says that "this song is not a metaphor." He is denying this conflict inside himself and trying to stop us from uncovering it.
edit: there used to be a "haha maybe it's not that deep" thing here but no, i was and am being entirely sincere and you can still find meaning in art even if it isn't intended. it's not a trick of some kind, it is an essential and beautiful part of art and culture at large. i also rewrote the whole comment.
YES MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
So guys I think the metaphor is
Caterpillars are a symbolism for childhood never quite knowing what’s happening being unaware of who you’ll be in the future you can see this in the quote 0:06 “they eat all there leave and gradually grow” referencing childhood and the fact that all we really did was eat and grow before turning into “butterflies” being an adult.
You see this again, in 0:09 when he says “when they pop out of there eggs, do they have any clue” again referring to childhood bliss and not having any clue.
0:13 “they don’t know where they’re headed they don’t know where they're from” could be talking about not knowing your Heritage. Maybe not knowing your full history, and not knowing where they’re headed is very similar to what we talked about in the last bit. 0:18 “These little wormies metamorphoses into something more” could be talking about personal growth and beating expectations for what everyone thought you’d become.
He also talks about “why do we respect something that can’t do long division write petitions or pay with a check” 0:34 he says he can “do all those things “ saying he is objectively better just because he as more knowledge then caterpillars.
which I think could be linked to the fact that very little people respect children and their ideas because they don’t know how to do adults things yet, Leading to a lack of respect and care for children’s opinions. 0:38 “i just don’t think caterpillars know what’s going on” again the lack of respect for kids.
And so i think this is about a child growing up with bliss and innocent but as they grow up they realize they are unsure of their Heritage and where there from (likely form going through the foster care system ) and tries to ask questions and bring ideas in but they are always dismissed because of there young age. But eventually they break everyone’s low expectations and turn into a butterfly(being a good adult)

Me after playing Kirby
The tragic dramatic irony of the video is that their place in the brutal hierarchy brought about by late stage capitalism is determined entirely by the inheritance of their parents, and none of us, no matter how exceptional, can escape a life of wage slavery unless we are born into gargantuan wealth and privilege, like our friend Brian David Gilbert. Our only hope is to join together, and use our army of bees to fight against the powers that bee and seize the means of production. This will, of course, never happen: the caterpillars are blissfully ignorant to this cruel, cruel reality, and as the ruling class, humans in this case, have valued short term profit over our environment for decades upon decades, the revolutionabee syndicalists who our the only ones that can reclaim our freedom are dropping by the second. One must also consider that the bees who are still alive, are owned by the ruling class, clearly depicting the states monopoly on force, and the God-like power this gives to the billionaires that the state itself works in the interest of.

that's the funniest thing I've ever heard
Thank you for this comment, I laughed out loud.
that's hilarious
It's true i was the mp4
@@OReidoIeieie can confirm, I'm the first 15 seconds of the song
Times running out, Brian.
8 months left for Brian to live their beekeeping dreams
Brian i am compelled to think this song is a metaphor
nah, brian would never dream of misleading us like that :( clearly he's hammering his point home instead of making it exaggerated & thus obvious that the song IS a metaphor!
I've always said that a well known author should write a book called "There is no deeper meaning, this is all literal and for fictional entertainment", and this is the closest I've seen anyone come! Thanks Brian!
There kinda is a short story meant to satirize this kind of obsession with symbolism and metaphors, it's called "Signs and Symbols" and it's about a couple whose son is in a mental institution because he's convinced everything in the world is trying to convey some hidden message to him, and the entire story is full of weird things that could be interpreted as symbolism but are actually just random and don't have any intended meaning.
I'm currently reading Catch 22, and while if you read the whole thing there are themes and stuff, individual chapters are just nonsense but somewhat fun
Only in short video form could this have been tolerable
I feel like with a name like that its impossible since its clearly made to point out how people overanalyze things and thus has a deeper meaning
So, you want a series called "TINDMTIALAE"
"Detective Duck And Mustachio Jones: Steel City Rumble"
You better become a bee keeper or you gotta get a Ukulele and apologize
Haha 😭

I tried it, but I don’t see how this makes sense for the song.
@@KyreynaRamirez-Relleno-ct8tw yeah I know I just kinda threw this together really quickly
I’ll be very happy if Brian makes a song about beekeeping exactly three years from now
Beekeeping seems like a plausible side hobby for him to dive into should he find the urban space tbh
Reasons why caterpillars aren’t respected members of society:
- Can’t be bee keepers
- Can’t do long division
- Can’t pay taxes
... I always knew I would never be a respected member of society but I could never put my finger on why... but I see now. I guess I'm a Caterpillar
- Can't do that spreadsheet... thing
ADHD havers called out with that line
one more year to become a keeper of bees
you have until spetember 9 to be a beekeeper
The caterpillar community been real quiet ever since this banger dropped O.O
a "bee keeper" you say... what's that a metaphor for?
Entitled reddit voiceover channel “DEMANDS” attention
A keeper of bees...?
Obviously it's not a metaphor for anything. Did you not read the title?
Actually, in my head I read this, and immediately connected the beekeeper thing to a comment I read on this video, the comment was about how he’s a metaphor for human’s trying to be superior to everything and everyone, and the caterpillar representing growth and pointlessness (idk about that), the beekeeper might representing him going on to try and be superior to even more things
it's a metaphor for being a keeper of bees
Its dangerously close to time for you to become a keeper of bees
You better get that beekeeping licence, your time is running out
"Please, let me just sing about bugs... bugs that don't matter"
- Neil Cicierega aka Lemon Demon
finally another song for my "non-metaphorical songs about bugs" playlist
Wait, is neil C. Lemon Demon??

Anyone else dealing with the fact that you can’t do long division, write petitions, or pay with a cheque, and now have to cope with the depressing realisation that Brian doesn’t respect you?
devastated. betrayed. miserable. desolated.
It's finally time to get good at darts. ....I mean, to learn how to write a cheque!
5 more months, Brian.
He running out of time for those bees
