LAY '莲 (Lit)' MV | REACTION!!!

Just to clarify Lay’s music and music videos that he’s producing now is different and separate from KPOP. He payed for the production of this mv all on his own and spent millions on this music video. He classifys his music as MPOP which stands for Mandarin pop, and he wants to show Chinese culture through his music, and this song is also based on the story about a Chinese hero XiangYu, and Lay also used a good amount of Chinese instruments in this song. Just to let anybody know that it will be sad to put all of this effort under the name of KPOP when it’s completely different from what he’s trying to do.

This Chinese title of this song means lotus, and that’s why the lotus flower keeps on appearing in the music video. In Chinese culture lotus is symbolized as pure and clean because it grows from mud but doesn’t get polluted by its surrounding. Now days people use lotus ironically to describe someone who’s faking to be pure and clean. Lay’s antis use this phrase to describe him (cuz they can’t find anything else to attack him). So Lay decided to make this song mocking the people who’s trying to take him down. Truly the king of China!

For those who don't know:
It is not K-pop. It is M-pop, a concept proposed by Lay, which stands for mixed mandarin pop. It is mandarin plus other kinds of language, but not just about language. Most of the instruments he uses are traditional Chinese instruments, talking about the story of a hero in ancient China, Xiang Yu, and there is also Chinese opera, but the beat is dark trap, a mixture of traditional and modern music. The company that makes the CG is the same company who makes that for Parasite.

The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general is a real historical figure named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. In the beginning of the MV you hear a Peking opera singer performing “The Song of Gaixia” which is a song that Xiang Yu composed for his wife, Lady Yu, who eventually took her own life. (Fun fact: In Lay's song "Jade" which is a song also on this album, the story is supposed to be about Lady Yu and Xiang Yu's love story.)
I don't know the story in Jet Lee's "Hero," but if that movie is also based on this historical battle, then it might be similar. But "Hero" is not where Lay took the story from.
Everything about this song and MV is a poetic, cinematic masterpiece. For example, the word Lotus in Chinese sounds a little like Lit in English. (Another play on words, just like the Chinese pronunciation of Jade sounds like Yu or you in English, which Lay cleverly used in his song "Jade." Get it? Jade = Yu and Jade = you.) Lay used lotus (Lit) as a metaphor for no matter how hard people try to bring him down, he will stand strong and survive through anything the world throws at him, like a lotus flower. The Lotus often represents purity. The Lotus is special because it grows in the mud, but out of the most dirty and unforgiving conditions, blooms one of the most beautiful flowers. The Lotus is a famous symbol in Chinese culture and it often represents how something good and pure can grow and triumph despite what you would think are unforgiving conditions.
Lay has said that the idea for "Lit" comes from the fact that his haters have been calling him "White Lotus," which refers to someone who acts innocent, and uses it for his gain and plays the victim all the time. So when he wrote the song he took that negativity and embraced it and turned it into something positive. So, in other words, he is saying: "You thought you could bring me down, but you are wrong. I am not a fake white lotus, but I am a true lotus who is LIT. I am more powerful then you know and I will rise above all your negativity and show you how I grow even stronger and more beautiful no matter how much mud and dirt I have to go through," etc.
The dragon is a very powerful symbol in Chinese culture and it is even said that if you are Chinese you are a descendant of the dragon. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize vitality, strength and good luck. In one interview I read, Lay also talked about how he has two dragons inside him -- a good dragon and a bad dragon. He said he always chooses to listen to the good dragon. The good dragon is the one who is protecting him and helping him through all his hardships and difficult times. So the main theme of "Lit" is about fighting his inner self and learning to ignore and overcome the people who are trying to knock him down.
Lay is is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. And "Lit" is a prime example of that.

If you really study the credits. you will see that this MV was produced by Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay -- he owns the studio. (Lay is a stage name given to him by SM Entertainment, his real name is Zhang Yixing.) So, If you read the credits, you will see that Lay has his hand in almost every aspect of this production. He is the one that wrote and composed the song and he even produced the beat himself. He is his own beat-maker.He is also executive producer, he helped choreograph and he helped direct the MV, etc. But that's normal for Lay's solo work With Lay, when you ask who did it?-- for any part of the song, MV or choreography -- you are pretty much guaranteed that the answer is: Lay. He does it all. He is such a perfectionist that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. He prides himself in the fact that all aspects of his music are created by him.

I still can't get over that dragon

He broke the record in pre-order by selling 1.5 million DJ copies in the first seven minutes . Also,he sold 2 million DJ copies on the first day of the album's release.In short he is the king of China.

So that big flower is lotus and the Chinese in the title “莲” is the Chinese character of lotus. Also “莲” has the similar pronunciation with “Lit” and I guess that’s why Lay named the song 莲(Lit).

“Taking china to the world”🥵🧡

This is filmed in HengDian, the largest filming studio/site in the world. A lot, if not ALL, Chinese historical dramas and movies are filmed there. This took 6 months and the budget for this MV was estimated to be 10 million RMB, or 1.4 million USD, all funds are from his studio (not SM lmao).

He also sang the intro part, played some instruments in the back, produced everything and also this song is based on an ancient real King.

Yes, Lay had put in a lot of effort on his 4th album. Especially this music video. He is using the production company whom won awards in Oscar with Korean Movie Parasite that is why the cgi is so Lit. There is a lot of stories/reference in the album concepts and music video. He also using many symbolic term and words playing between mandarin and english. Very very interesting. The whole concepts came from an ancient powerful Chinese WarLord / General named Xiang Yu with his lover Lady Yu Ji. (At the very beginning part with Beiking Opera) . This song 'Lit' is from the perspective of General Xiang Yu while another song of the album 'Jade' is from the perspective of Lady Yu Ji. In this song ' Lit' is projecting the mighty General with dignity that will not give up easily even he had been surrounded by enemies and will not knee or to surrender. He rather die in dignity. Just like Lay that will continue perusing his dream and worked hard to achieve it despite the haters that laugh and look down at him and his dream.
