This song was seriously so raw! When I listened to it the first time without the lyrics I was so hyped up and all but then I listened to the lyrics and woooww!! This song is so deep and the dance goes so well with it. It talks about losing your passion on something you love and how it feels like you died because of it. Such a deep message on such a good instrumental.

So judging from Jung's book and Yoongi's interlude this is my theory and interpretation: At first his shadows are preventing him from reaching the light and trying to control him, trying to keep him imprisoned. He fights with them for the majority of the video trying to break free from them. At the end you see them all doing the same moves, this is him embracing his shadows and becoming one with them, once he did that, his shadows actually help him rise and ascend towards the light.
This was beautifully interpreted by MN, and it really captures the spirit and concept of the album, or perhaps part of it.

i love bangtan always comes back with a different sound every time, which having the same sound for every album can scare the audience off, but bangtan always switchs up. having the same sound gets reptitive and boring after a while.

Because of BTS it feels like we are in a huge art class with this comeback. Not only are they great artists and people but they are great professors. Teaching us so most with this comeback especially people who don’t know anything about art or never been into art, including me

I’m pretty sure that background “bass-like” sound is played by a Cello :) it has a darker sound than the Violin

This song to sum it up in simple words talks about the relationship between the art and the artist.
The lyrics talk about how there comes a point in an artist's life when the love for their art fades away. The art no longer makes you feel emotions, you feel blank. You don't feel the passion, you don't feel anything. You sink and you reach the bottom of this dark pit. The one thing that you love, you don't feel that anymore.
And when you reach rock bottom is when you realise that that's all you have, the art, or in this case music is all you have, Music is what makes you alive. The same thing that brings you down will bring you back up again because that's where your soul truly lies. And so you rise up again, the black swan in you rises and it's a cycle. Because that's what the relationship between art and the artist is. It's complicated, vulnerable and personal.
This is shown perfectly in the video where you see the other dancers first bringing him down and him struggling back and forth trying to get out of the cage and their grasp. He then gets rid of them and is all alone and goes further down and reaches his darkest point. Thats when you see the other dancers following him again. He then pushes them away and finally gains control and the same dancers bring him back again and he soars and flies in the end. Showing that music lifted him up again.
This is my opinion and interpretation of the lyrics and the video. But Gosh. What a masterpiece. I LOVE BTS.

the reflection of dancers in the water, the words written on the walls, the cage, and him trying almost run away from people in black clothes, as well as the fact that there are 7 dancers. everything has a meaning. BTS just forced us to use our brain. i have never seen a black swan movie, but because of this mv and the song, i am more than willing to watch it. this is amazing. i am crying. and the fact that they are talking about "dancers death", they are talking about themselves as well, because they are artists. the consept of art and classical music, dance art reminds me of BTS 'blood, sweat and tears' as well as Jimin 'Lie'

I cried.
Mainly because I relate so much to the lyrics. The lyrics was talking about every artist's nightmare, when the music or words stop making your heart race, when the creative flow stop, and when everything you create seems tasteless and colorless. Even the thought of it is scary, and I can only imagine how BTS feels with the pressure to deliver, and the fear that takes hold every time your stumped 'is this it? Is this the end?'
The musicality of that piece!!!!
Bruh, the dancing was so on point, I love how he (the shirtless) was downtrodden and beaten down at first, and when he had to fight his shadows so he can go out of that box of light, to become free, and then fighting them until they actually become him (the follow his movements) and then he is able to fly. Kind of a commentary of how we have to fight and then accept our shadow so we can become hold and soar.

Bris you’re hella quick. Their new songs releases 5 am where I live and it’s not even 6am yet. Btw this performance speaks on how Bts truly feels. Can you imagine see Jimin performing this when you understand the lyrics? Way more sad

I absolutely love this MV. I know everyone will have their own interpretation of the dance, but this is such a strong expression of fighting fear and the shadows you dwell in to accept one's self. Literally in the beginning following his shadows, letting them move him through life. Then struggling against them winning and losing battles. Finally breaking free, still having his guard up till he finds his strength to fight them once again to take control. Making them apart of him accepting his dark side so he can rise up and fly. Its beautiful!!

what I understood from the choreo is that there is a lot of symbolism of a bird trying to escape a cage but it’s being held back, and once it breaks free it needs to learn to use its wings and fly as it had never had the freedom to do it before. ironically, the things that were were seemingly keeping it in its cage were also the ones to help it fly. this could represent the creation of art feeling like a cage yet also oddly being the one thing to make you feel liberated.

Omg!!!! The symbolism!!!! Being trapped in a box of the industry and expectations but then finding the freedom to throw off all the negativity bot internal and external so they don’t die from losing their love of music and creating!!!!! SHOOKETH!!!!!!!

I think the dancers represent music, the guy without the shirt represents bts. Music gives bts wings, but they also try to run away from it. At the ending music comes to bts again and gives them wings to go high. It basically talks about bts fearing that music isn't their thing anymore/doesn't make them happy anymore.
That's just my view of this

About different artists coming together to express their artistry for the world. Well they had the MN Dance Company perform for this as apart of the CONNECT project, to allow the art of dance be shown. It gives dancers a chance to shine. Is awesome. And the song is amazing. BTS is just amazing as always!

I like that they had the same type of laser light "cage" that was in Suga's Shadow video. I feel like they are telling the world we won't be caged, we won't conform to do what everyone else want's us to do. We will do our thing the way we want to. If we don't, then we will stop losing the excitement we have for out music and the passion will be gone... then it will no longer be BTS masterpieces' that we all love. I really love this dance. This is the dance of the Black Swan. This is art on another level. BTS is paving the way.

My take on the 'Swan' is one who embodies an new idol in the industry: naïve, pure and needs nurturing. A swan is always to be graceful and poised; an idol must be 'perfect' in the eyes of the public. Due to the overwhelming expectations, this young and pure swan loses their spark---their passion. Hence the name, Black Swan.

At the end the swan has to accept that he could not really fly without his shadow. Like you could not really run from your past. BTS has finally arrived. They are really on a different level now. They are not just a Kpop boyband. Artists on truest form.

I think that this expresses about the journey that Yoongi talks about in Shadow. You get taken over by your shadow, you try to escape, try to face and fight it, but in the end you have to accept it to flourish and fly.

Here's my own interpretation of the Black Swan dance in the art film (now that I've watched it like countless times haha):
0:55 - Testing his wings out as a young boy. His wings represent his passion and self-motivation to pursue his dreams.
1:32 - His wings lift him up but also takes him through unexpected twists and turns in life, even leading to his downfall / darkest moments in life (the move where they spin him and then step on him repeatedly).
2:05 - Now that he's at his darkest moments, he feels like he's trapped in a cage and cannot break out no matter how much he struggles to (you'll see the wings holding him back from escaping). By trying to escape from his wings, this shows that he's losing his self-motivation and focus in his craft and/or his dreams.
2:45 - He finally found a way to escape his feelings of entrapment. Since he associated his wings with the cage, he is hesitant to take back his wings.
3:09 - You can see that he continuously fights himself, debating whether he still wants his wings (the move where he and his wings take turns doing fighting stances against each other, and then when he runs away they also try to follow him).
3:24 - The music changes because he successfully frees himself from his wings (old dreams). This is really a moment of rebirth where he is finally independent and is struggling to grow new wings (represents leaving behind old dreams and trying to pursue new dreams).
4:12 - With his new wings, his life still seems incomplete and complicated (he descends alone on the escalator, and then he does an upside down split to show he feels lost, lonely and unhappy). He misses his old wings, which is why they come back to him and pull him out from his upside down split. However, although he misses his old wings, he simultaneously fights them because he's uncertain what he wants to do in life.
4:40 - He finally embraces his old wings wholeheartedly. He learns how to co-exist with them peacefully and use them to his advantage (you'll see that he makes flying movements, and his wings fly with him in sync).
5:00 - By fully embracing his wings, his wings in return also lift him up toward attaining happiness/fulfillment. He has fought hard to find his purpose in life, and now he has found it by rediscovering his old dreams, passions and self-motivation.
Conclusion: Remember that in the beginning, the quote says "A dancer dies twice -- once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." BTS is trying to show us that as artists, while they have dreams and are passionate about their craft, at the same time they also feel trapped by their craft plus feel afraid that they might lose interest in their craft one day. What if one day RM or Suga wakes up and decide they don't want to write and produce lyrics anymore? What if one day Jimin or J-Hope decides that dancing doesn't bring them the happiness/fulfillment they once felt? If that happened, it would be similar to that painful first death that the quote is referring to. If you lived without passion and self-motivation, your life would be meaningless and empty as though you're already dead. This song is to represent this inner fear and struggle -- shadows that linger within our minds.

This resonates so much with their comeback trailer: SHADOW. Your shadow will always follow you & be part of you. Either you allow it to grow so big & let it swallow you whole OR make peace with yourself and accept that it's part of you. Depending on your decision, the shadow is there to drag you down or lift you up. This beautiful video piece was able to portray that through these amazing dancers. 😱😭👍 That's what I got from it. I think the levels mean something. Like he's fighting for music but at the end normalizes and goes down to the bottom depths then he decides to fight for his music and he now has support again and now the swan gets to fly high

i´m sitting here crying my eyes out and the uneasy feeling won´t go away. i don´tknow why, but to me this song came in like a scream for help ... as if someone reached out and yelled to help. i listen to music everyday and never, never in my life hit me a song that deep. i´m a 33 year old and i was a moderator for a web radio for several years so i think i know a lot of music.....but really....this hits deep.
