This is the same story I hear about every day in Detroit. Drive by shootings, no one's talking. Someone's father, wife, son, daughter. Sometimes a whole family. I constantly pass the crime stopper banners with the same faces on it year after year. No one talks. Someone knows. But no one talks. And that's the saddest part of it all. Because we all know the killer won't ever turn themselves in. This poor family probably wont ever get any sort of justice. And it's the same tragic story, over and over, played in front of an audience who turns away and a country whos desensitized to feeling sympathy for anyone but themselves.

He did say it was very frustrating knowing that someone out there does know something; even sometimes someone he was questioning knew who it was, but they wouldn’t speak because of snitch culture. When he could bring justice to a family who lost a loved one - that was what he wanted, and knowing there were some cases that he couldn’t do it, was heart breaking.

Which in itself is racist since shes saying because they predominantly white they dont care about other racist. The problem is more with the community itself. People are more afraid to give any information in fear of being killed, harmed, getting labeled as a snitch etc. by others in the community. The police want to solve these crimes but when no one is saying anything and theres little to no evidence. Really what are you suppose to do? Typically the only evidence they get is the victim, a bullet and or casing maybe if they're lucky. Which even getting bullets and casing most of the time doesnt help. The firearms are usually stolen and modified so the rifling is changed and cant as easily be tracked. If there is bullet casings there usually arent any figure prints on them. Plus the people who commit a murder with a firearm typically toss them in rivers, mostly to never be seen again.

Saw a documentary about something similar. A little girl under five killed. Shot through the window of a car in broad daylight. Everyone on the block apparently knew who did it and eventually, the family gathered enough info through back channels to know who did it as well, but nothing could be done because nobody wanted to be seen as a snitch. They say they walk around every day in the same neighborhood as the suspected killer, the man who murdered their daughter. On the one hand, they want to move to get away, but they also don't want to move in the hopes that they might be able to persuade their neighbors to talk to the police one day so that they can get justice for their little girl.

That being said (lol), I would love to see him do follow ups in his own style to some of the more recent cases covered by Ryan and Shane, especially when there are still living family members. Like the Keddie Cabin, he could actually talk to the remaining Sharp family members, the current sheriff, etc. Or the Jamison family disappearances. Ryan’s style is to stay removed and that’s fine, that’s a very legitimate way to tell those kinds of stories. Aria gets right down into the heart of the subject. There’s room for both on the channel.

I really appreciate the fact that she mentioned the snitching because I finally got closure on something that has been on my mind throughout my entire teaching career since the 2000s

Its taught in all communities at a young age. I hear similar stories in Australia also. Some people treat it as a way to protect the community. But it isn't, it protects only the perp's. From the school yard bully to the priest molesting kids. This don't snitch dibber dobber herd mentality is cancerous. Sorry to hear what you had happen but not at all surprised. We had something similar in the Aboriginal communities several years ago. Young kids being systematically molested and raped. When the local teacher tried to do something about the Aboriginal community came down on the teacher like a ton of bricks. They would rather let the kids suffer then have their community be talked about in such a way or interfered with by outside hands. Even though they happily take from those outside hands daily. Because the Elders made such a fuss about this White teacher it all got swept under the rug.

When my grandpa died I felt the same way. I felt that no one cared because their neighborhood is old, the houses are old, and the people are old, def, or blind. There was no public announcement that he died like there would be in a movie. Just a funeral and that was that. I still have him as a contact and I tried calling him for fun all I heard was “we’re sorry, the number you’re trying to reach has calling restriction. I repeat code ___”

Thank you doing this story. Its so important to get this message out. What is also important is we have to get more people with integrity on the police force. People who won't sell out the citizens trying to help. When someone comes to the police and give them a video or tell them of their eye witness encounter don't sell them out to the criminals trying to get the bigger fish, so to speak. A citizen has to feel that going to the police will not put them or their family in harm's way. In 2010 3 young men walked into my church and fired off 5 rounds while we were having service. There were over 100 people at that gathering and of that at least 35 of us knew who the shooter was but was so afraid to tell. And when then the police arrested one random young man and was able to get vital information from him to catch the main shooter, instead of giving him and his family a relocation plan they just dumped him in the hood and let them know he snitched. That young man was shot several times. Thank God he survived but that didn't have to happen. Ijs we gotta be able to trust the police and right now its just not happening.
