Actually mass shootings aren’t that common they’re just reported on more, it’s still a horrible tragedy but doesn’t happen nearly as often as people think they do
I'm not saying the fear is logical (the media does increases it) but people are more likely to jump to the conclusion, because it has occurred more often since 2012
In 2018 there was a mass shooting almost once a day on average. That’s not exactly statistically rare.

This shooting is the reason I’m still scared of being in movie theaters.
I live in Colorado and cannot go into a theatre and in fact the only movie I have seen in a theatre since that shooting was Frozen. Long after it had been in the theaters for a while.
Me too... and I was only 11 when I heard about this shooting. And after this news, I never asked my parents to take me to the movies. When my friends make plans to go to the movies I go but I’m always with fear that something like this might happen. I even make us sit near the emergency exit... but now my boyfriend and i watch movies on our movie box or amazon prime... I recently went to watch Joker and I was anxious the entire time 😭
I've been to that theatre long after the shooting but I was on the edge of my chair and my heart would jump when anybody would come in or leave. Any other theatres I feel the same way. I used to love being treated by my parents at a big theater like that but now I dread it and avoid them at all costs.
My 2 cousin's survived that shooting they're still going to therapy because of it they were only 5 and 7 when it happened

I agree. Now if anyone unusual comes in the theater I get up and tell someone. I had to do that during Aladdin. 2 guys came in, in blacks hoodies. Within 10 mins of them coming in they got back up and left. I was like nope! I yold a theater employee. They didn't come back in

K8 B same I do the same or when I see someone sitting by themselves all the way in the corner with nobody around them, it’s sad how we can even enjoy a movie now a days due to these kind of events what has society come to now where we have to be paranoid everywhere we go.
I was in a church service when something metal clanged to the floor suddenly. The elderly lady next to me hit the floor. I ducked, and a man in front of me ducked as well. I helped the elderly lady up and asked her if she was okay. She started crying. The man in front of me turned around and told me he had been in Afghanistan, and was embarrassed he reacted to the sound like that. I reassured him, that I had the same reaction as him and we nervously chuckled about it. PTSD is no joke. The three of us have it for different reasons, but we all have it.

Angel I understand where you’re coming from and I’m so sorry that happened to you. What they mean is that it helps when you are able to confront situations related to your trauma like going to the movies etc. Not the trauma itself. For example, it would probably help me personally to play Smash Bros with my close friends since that was a game my abuser and I used to play (but i’m not ready yet). You’re strong no matter what stage of recovery you are in.

This was the theater I went to growing up. My friend bought us tickets for that night, but I got held up at work and she ended up getting the flu. I think about it a lot.

when i was 10 years old me and my friend went to go see Wonder Women. There was a man alone in the back corner with a big bag. I was in front of him. My parents weren’t there. He took out the gun. People noticed right away. He was pulled out immediately. Don’t know who he was, where he is now, but I think about that night a lot. I could’ve died as a ten year old.

The thing that really stood out to me was how she was apologizing like “sorry for interrupting your movie experience. My friend got shot. ‘Scuse me.” It sounds like such a dazed and helpless feeling.
Her saying she screamed “WHY” because she was there with her sister as people died hit me. I can’t imagine being in that situation with my little brother.
I feel like because of all these shootings everyone now has that instinct of "if a shooter..." like if a shooter came from here where would I be able to go, where is the best place for me to sit or stand or whatever that if a shooter enters I'll be safe
It's so scary nowadays everyday at school I'm thinking about what I would do if there really was a shooter. It doesnt help when your school gets shooting and bombing threats at least twice a month.
I'm thankful that I don't live in America for those reasons. But one of my friends there had her school shut down for a day or so, because a guy was threatening to shoot it up. Crazy how it's almost 2020 and that's a possibility in a supposedly "safe country".
@@nine-vi7rw Yeah 2 years ago the police were called and were told that our school had hostages inside. We were all crying in the corner of the room as we sit there for 3 hours. Thank god it was a false alarm though.

I live about a block away from this theater and every time I pass it, I look at that back entrance. Everytime I go there, I get massive anxiety. The world lost a beautiful human being that day. RIP AJ, everyone from Gateway still remembers you every day, every year.

I had a friend named AJ that survived my school shooting. Got cancer a year later and passed away. How ironic. Never forget being there for each other and going to the vigil together. Glad we got a little extra time together.

This is an interesting perspective because it’s people in the other theatre not the direct theatre. People still did not even notice gun fire because it seemed like it was apart of the movie. People didn’t notice the friend that was shot or bullets were coming through the wall. That’s so crazy

That's what happens with trauma, the brains main purpose is to protect us. What was happening in that theater was too much for the brain to handle so it blocked out what was needed in order to survive.
Yeah. and theatre walls are soundproof also.
My brother is alive, but he has a bullet scar on his back from this shooting (he was covering his girlfriend at the time, who remained unharmed). Thank you for this, Melia.
Edit: I just googled the reddit story, but it's not written by my brother's girlfriend, as the stories don't line up, but I'm glad you all told me about it because my brother was vague and I've always been too scared to ask him for details on the event.
His now fiance passed away a couple years ago, I believe from a car accident, but I could be wrong..... I know.

i work at a movie theater and we are now trained so intensively on what to do in this situation. we have learning studios on this every couple months just to keep us fresh on the procedures. when Joker came out a few months ago we had police officers in the theater and it was just so crazy to think about. i am a 17 year old girl working with others the same age/younger than me, in a theater where people had threatened to pull something like this.
I work in a movie theater too. I’m always on my toes when I’m on the job and when I’m there as a customer. It honestly sucks..but I enjoy my job.
Yeah we also had extra staff on with the joker viewings. We had extra security too.
i’m so glad nothing happened at the new joker showings. the release of the movie was so anticipated and everyone was so scared, but i’m so happy a situation like this didn’t happen again.
Just remember dont ever be scared or embarrassed to run or duck to save your life.

When I was 4, the Columbine shooting happened; which was a block away from my house. When I was 19 (I think), the aurora shooting happened, I was a block away. When I was 20, the Arapaho shooting happened; I was driving by as it happened. When I was 24, I was robbed gunpoint at the bank I’ve worked at..
I’ve dodged a few bullets. Much respect to everyone who has gone through this.

I was 3 years old when Columbine happened. I lived in Steamboat Springs at the time then...and I was 6 years old at the time of 9/11.....still in the same place.

Weird seeing this in my recommended. I lost a really close family member in this exact shooting. 7 years doesn’t not take the pain away and with all the shootings happening today it definitely makes it harder to not think about. Even though I was young it still is hard to remember the feelings my mother felt. Honestly something needs to be done. Thank you for sharing your story 🖤

If you want to feel protected, get your CCW and get a gun. There was a guy that walked into a church in Texas with a shotgun and started opening fire. He only killed one or two people (out of 40) just because a man attending the church had his own gun and started opening fire on the guy. Killed him in one shot and saved many lives. The guy is a hero.

Ever since that event, everytime I go to a movie theater it's like an automatic instinct to think where I would run or hide if someone started shooting. I also get super paranoid if I sit in the front or middle row because I'm scared someone will shoot from behind.
Trust me you are not the only one who does this , I don’t go to the movies much now but when we go every time the door opens I feel nervous . I always think about where I would hide my 11 year old son

I went to see the joker a while ago and I was so nervous. I kept thinking of places to hide or how to act if a shooter would come near me. It’s so scary that we have to live like this in America. I get scared that my brother is in school without me and I can’t help him if there was a school shooter. There needs to be stricter gun control
Every time I go to a movie theater I ask for seats in the back or somewhere in the middle. Never in the front cause for me i start to think of a person going in from the exit doors and shooting or something and I try my best to not think that when I do end up sitting there but it’s hard not to so I feel you.

I cannot imagine being in a shooting, living in fear, constantly not knowing if your gonna make it... you are so brave. If can’t imagine the pain you’ve been through. I am just glad you’re were able to open up about this.
I remember being in high school, and we had a lock down because someone on campus had a gun. I remember the chaos yet calmness of everyone, trying to stay quiet yet freaking out at the same time. I remember the feeling I had inside my chest and stomach, being super scared. Thankfully, nothing happened and no one was hurt. You are so strong to talk about this! You rock!!!!

Quit overrating. Don't stop that from enjoying your life. Don't live life in fear of something happening in the off chance. Even though shootings are becoming more common it's still almost impossible to ever find your self caught in one. When you live in fear the terrorist did more than just shooting those people but causing future fear. I go to the movies all the time to experience movies i love. It's just a different experience from home. Fear of shootings doesn't stop me from going at least once a month.

I work at a movie theatre and right before Joker came out this year we changed to a no backpack policy and honestly all the workers were nervous working opening weekend of that movie because of this we even had armed security and I

I work at a Cinemark (same company as Century) in Fort Collins only about 40 minutes away from Aurora. My GM was the manager in Aurora during the shooting. He never talks about it, but whenever the theater is busy, I can tell he's a little on edge. We always have cops standing in the theater, and there is always a staff member who does security checks in each theater, multiple times a showing. Even though I didn't experience what my manager did, it's always present in the back of my mind.
Small world. My husband and I go to this theater quite a bit and always notice how safe it feels. I hope you know that you the staff and your GM are doing a great job in keeping it safe.
MrsFefeNinja I’ve been on edge during a few movies. Last few times I have been, there have been guards and even men trying to start fights with people in the theatre, and I remember feeling nervous... not knowing if this person is gonna flip out.
I work at a Cinemark in Illinois. We had a situation the weekend I trained usher where two people who were acting suspicious had managed to get past box and podium twice. No one checked their bags, and they were being aggressive with usher. They kicked them out and they came back the next day doing the same thing and we finally asked for help from mall security. It saddens me to think what may have happened if we hadn’t of gotten help and if they could’ve truly been dangerous, considering they managed to get into a theater with their bags.

After there was a shooting my senior year at my high school, it’s all I can think about. To the point I can’t go to a movie. I haven’t been for 6 years.

This shooting made me so conscious when I’m at movie theaters. And all these school shootings have made me extremely paranoid when at school and paranoid everywhere
It’s sad that this has become commonplace and it’s sad our government has not been able to make a lasting change yet
I live in Aurora and the theatre that this happened at is right by my house and I used to go there all the time and I remember this happening and my sister was going to go with some friends but she got grounded (thank God) but my dad was working in the mall across the street and I remember him just coming home and explaining what was happening and watching the news and the shooters trials and even now I sometimes go to that theatre just because it's so close and now there's police everywhere, there's a no backpack policy, and most everyone I know still won't set foot in there. what happened is awful and it's truely awful that it still needs to be a concern today. thank you for reading this if you did.

This is such a tragic story and I love how she ended it by telling us that there are horribly cruel things that go on in this country but at the same time there are good things it’s uplifting that a person who went through this doesn’t say how bad the world is but says it’s just as good

Another survivor shared her story on reddit. Her husband was shot and lost his leg. She was in the same row as the youngest victim. She remembers being scared because they left a trail of blood when escaping the theatre, and thought the shooter would follow. A very sad story. The way she wrote about it, didn't forget a single detail. Its heartbreaking.

Whenever I see a worker or a person walk through a theater when the movie is playing I have a tiny panic attack because my mind always thinks the worse.

I remember hearing about the showing the previous night, thinking how cool it would be because there would probably be people in costume and everything, and wishing I could go. I remember getting up, coming down to go to work, and my mother had the news on. She wasn't getting ready, she was just staring at the TV. I was late for work because we were both just frozen, watching the TV talk about Aurora 16. I remember watching the hunt for the shooter. It was just kind of numbing. It felt so distant, even though it was less than 10 miles away. We knew that theater. We shopped at the mall next door. But it still felt like something happening in another world.
Until we took flowers to the memorial that had been set up that weekend. We got a dozen roses, one for each victim, and walked the rows of crosses, placing them on each one alongside the crowd of people that had come to do the same. Even then, they were just faces on posts. It all sank in when we reached the little girl's cross. It was surrounded by flowers and teddy bears. Lots of little teddy bears. Pooh bears. And my heart finally broke. Because she wasn't just a face on the news anymore. She was a little girl who was so excited to go to a movie when she should have been in bed, who loved bears and Winnie the Pooh, and she was gone. I cried the whole way home.

7 years later and we’re dealing with this more often. If nothing changed after Sandy Hook then I have no hope that anything will change in the near future
I seriously can’t grasp the fact that people will see stuff like this and think that having stricter gun laws takes away their freedom.
there’s always an extreme case that proves ones point .... example: a man stoppped an active shooter in a church who shot 30 poeple with his car and ar-15... shooter would’ve gotten away... think with your head not heart

It’s now been 10 years. I remember my girlfriend at the time texted me and said that there was a shooting at the theater we go to and we can’t go there anymore. I remember getting messages all day saying thank god you weren’t there, glad you’re safe, etc. it was a crazy and sad time, god bless this woman for telling her story.
I remember seeing this on the tv the next morning and just crying for everybody who were there. Thank you for sharing your story, and being so brave to share.
I remember coming home from a midnight showing of Dark Knight the same night this happened, states away in NC, and my mom just hugged me and cried, knowing that not all mothers like her were as lucky. It breaks my heart.

I remember once I was in colorado at a pool in Glenwood Springs, and a woman had a batman tattoo on her back with a date-date. I thought "huh, she must really like Batman." I think about her a lot.

its dey I’m the same way. I love going to the movies but it’s terrifying now to think that one of my favorite places could be dangerous. I worked at a theater at the time the shooting happened and I was terrified to go to work.
I’m scared of movie theatres too but you have to remember (and I know it’s hard) but you’re letting them win if it ends up stopping you from going to places and doing things you want to do 💞

i remember going to the movies with one of my friends. we saw the back door opening and closing. we started plotting what to do if there was a shooter. we went to the bathroom for fifteen minutes just to be safe. It was a worker. The fact that this is where our minds went right away is so sad.

I read a story from another surviver of the shooting on Reddit a couple weeks ago!! I looked up pictures of the lost victims and the shooter, the pictures terrified me especially the ones the shooter took of himself. And I saw pictures the victim described such as a trail of blood coming from her boyfriend or husbands leg, and her friends pink flip flops that fell off when they went out the exit at the theater. I watched videos of people in the shooters trial giving their parts and I cried, especially with the one of the youngest lost soul's babysitter. The little girl who died would be around my age now (13). I can't stop thinking of the shooting and I don't think I ever will. It's great to hear another person's experience so I can know more. Thank you to this lovely lady for giving her story, and thank you BuzzFeed Unsolved for letting us hear her

I went to a movie at an AMC theater right after a shooting happened. I can't remember which one it was (which is sad tbh). I was with my mom and when we sat down she saw a guy walk in by himself with a big duffel bag. The guy sat in the very back row, which was not far from us. Considering that a shooting had just happened and there had been a shooting in the mall this theater was attached to a few years prior we were freaked out by this. My mom went outside to tell one of the staff who seemed to take it seriously but literately nothing was done about it. We thought they would send security or something to make sure everything was ok but no one ever came. I kinda feel like an idiot for not leaving but we didn't know if we were just being paranoid. Everything ended up being fine but to this day I can't believe the theater didn't check. A guy walked in by himself with a big duffel bag and they did absolutely nothing about it. My mom contacted customer service after this but she never got a response.
Melo they probably looked inside the duffel bag before he got in. That’s what they always do in California.
to be fair, once ur inside, i would absolutely hate being harassed by ppl watching a movie.. check me when i come in, once im in, dont bother me. telling ppl someone looks suspicious is a bit over reactive, but i get why u felt that way. imagine it happened to you, and 20 ppl went up to say u looked suspicious. i dont know, its tough.

One time my dad signed up for in shape gym membership and they gave him a free duffel bag. This happened outside the theater and we went inside the theater with it lol

@lovnely Well, despite the comment is actually a joke, I think it turn out to be true. What's even more interesting is that society is like a bunch of chemicals that somehow disfigured your identity and leads you into a pure insanity day by day when your mental breakdown snaps. That's how the Joker turn out to be. Batman 1989 is a circus trip made by Tim Burton, the Dark Knight is more of a detective thriller, and The Joker is more of a psychological thriller than just a supervillain movie. And about Synder's Batman? Not so much. It has nothing to do with the aspects of the real Joker.

I live in aurora and have been in that theater a lot. It’s so scary to be able to put a picture to this story and think that I could be in a room that 12 people were murdered in. She’s so brave for telling her story, I can’t even begin to say how much I respect her.

Actually a lot of it sounds just like this tbh. But the girls boyfriend got shot and they ran through the emergency exit. They were in the same room as the shooter though. Also the girl wasn’t told where they took her boyfriend she searched for hours to find him an hour away from there.

According to some victims record, the little girl was Veronica Moser Sullivan. She was shot 4 times and her mother, pregnant at the time, remained tetraplegic and lost her baby a week later. Humans can be cruel.

@@N..P.. With all due respect, it is human nature to feel fear over something so horrific happening to ordinary people doing ordinary things. It wouldn't make as much sense to fear having a bomb dropped on you in Afghanistan if you never travel to that area, but it does make sense to have a healthy fear (aka: respect) for things that you can relate to personally. I feel it shows an empathy and understanding (even in the smallest sense) of what happened to the victims and their families that day. Some people have a great ability to imagine themselves in situations that they haven't personally experienced, which also creates more compassion. It's not a bad thing unless you believe fear itself is bad.
I remember going to see The Dark Knight Rises in NC with my dad after the Colorado shooting happened, and I was nervous. I kept checking the movie theatre exits every few minutes during the movie. I knew I was okay because my dad was with me, but still, I couldn't shake the feeling off.
Another time, I went to see a Marvel film, X-Men: Apocalypse (I think) with my boyfriend, and I saw a backpack just sitting there in an empty seat with no one else around. We decided to leave the theatre and report it to the manager. Thankfully, nothing happened, and the manager ended up giving us free tickets.
Honestly, it sucks when a sick person ruins a moment like this for everyone and instills this fear of wanting to go out at all.

But you know theatre’s obviously didn’t care enough to change anything for people going into the theatres until there was a certain movie with the same character they decide to change things and it might seem like I’m mad they did I’m just saying if people were really that shooken up by this which we should be it’s infuriating knowing they only want to change things because of certain things not all things
