Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and in todayβs video we'll be talking about the recent trend of passenger planes being converted into cargo planes due to the COVID-19 Outbreak. What is the reason for airlines to strip and refit their aircraft, what special considerations need to be taken into account and why is this a big deal?
Itβs time to convert so let's get started!
First things first, what is going on in the aviation industry, no planes to be seen in the sky. The corona virus has taken control entirely, except for the Cargo operators, more about that in a few seconds.
However since my Corona virus video at the end of february, we all know the virus has spread rapidly around the world with the US recently passing 300,000 confirmed cases and 93% of the world's population are living in countries with some form of border restriction ranging from banning travellers from specific countries all the way to some nations banning all entry to their country entirely. Now because of these unprecedented border controls being put in place as well as numerous travel bans and a downturn in the economy, many airlines are seeing their demand of flights dry out like never before. Many are operating at a tiny fraction of their expected demand with some being grounded completely or only for charter flights responding to the virus outbreak.
Because of this downturn, many passenger airlines such as American Airlines are facing financial uncertainty and huge losses from the drop in revenue. It is important to remember that almost all the fixed costs have remained for airlines with the notable exception, no fuel costs since aircraft are ainβt flying. Airlines are still paying to keep the planes airworthy, staff salaries, regular airport fees for parking, high airplane lease fees and countless other costs. This means that many passenger airlines are seeing money quickly disappear and therefore are desperately looking for solutions to avoid bankruptcy.
Whilst cutting staff is one way to reduce costs, in my opinion that should always be the last resort, but airline managers always seem to cut salaries first, many airlines are now looking at the option of flying cargo only flights as a way to keep their aircraft flying and making at least some money. Some airlines such as Air New Zealand are flying international cargo flights on behalf of their country's government to collect vital medical supplies or deliver time sensitive cargo such as perishable exports. One of the flights from Singapore to Auckland using a Boeing 787-9, which is capable of carrying over 300 passengers, only carried 4 passengers plus the crew. Hows that for premium service! Itβs pretty obvious that the airline wouldnβt have made any money on such a small number of passengers but the key is the massive cargo holds, normally full of passenger bags, now being free for additional cargo. Some airlines are taking this idea even further by using passenger areas for extra cargo space to carry more goods especially equipment like ventilators needed so desperately in Europe and North America.
See more in the video!
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

Imagine what first class package seating would be like. Wide box room, private screening. Extra wrapping as complimentary. Box slippers with stuffing champagne along with box wifi and a personal attendant.
Spent much of my life as an international cargo jet pilot. Cargo never complains,. Cargo doesnβt care if you have a bad landing, or if you fly through turbulence. It just sits there no fuss, no trouble. Seems never a shortage of cargo to move.

Agreed. I just ordered it.
Captain Joe Please keep doing ads like that
My father used to be an engineer at Belfast City Airport, and he was telling me about - back when the Shorts 360 was a common sight there - it was so easy to convert it from passenger to cargo, the plane would never really stop. It would run passengers during the day, and have a short turnaround at night to take the seats out and then run cargo in the evenings and nights. In the morning the seats would go back in.
My flight school stopped every non-solo or exam flights, and Iβm here waiting with a single flight hour ππππ
Whew! Was hoping the "wish you were here" outro was still going to be there when the ominous music was playing. Thanks for another great video Captain Joe!
As a career Air Force Port Dawg, seeing cargo strapped to seats is painful, because it's going to take so much effort to load/unload, but you gotta do what you gotta do! Fly safe.
Very crisp and direct answer @ 4:24! Well done.
The Norwegian airline WiderΓΈe is now going to transport people with the corona virus. They are using the dash 8-100 to transport people around Norway. (The dash 8-100 can land at every single passenger airport in Norway)
Just for playing Isolated System, you already got my respect
Captain Joe, Thanks for educating us about aviation. Fly High!!!! :-)
Joe, I wanna salute you because you are one of the cargo pilots that are helping the world.Nobody really thinks cargo pilot are not helping with the pandemic.
@Adill Prochownik ok you got a point, but first thing thing you think of people that are preventing the pandamic are doctor, but you don't think of pilots when you think of this pandamic.

Very informative!!!!!! Thank you Joe,stay safe!
Back in the early 80's I took the MAC (Military Airlift Command) Affiliated Load Planners course. We were taught on the loading of civilian cargo and passenger aircraft with cargo as well as being able to calculate their weight and balance.
I do not remember which airline or cargo hauler it was but there was actually equipment for tilting a 463L pallet to fit it through the 747's lower cargo hold door. Of course the pallet could not be loaded very tall, but it could be done.
I think what you are thinking about is the TAC40 loader =). I was a 2T2 and certified load planner for a number of years. Did you mean tilting, or rotating? Most 463L pallets in the lower belly compartment were "logistics" i.e. the short end aligned with fore/aft axis.
@@SVSky Way too many decades ago now. But I do remember the instructor commenting on the fact the lower cargo opening was narrower than the pallet.
Maybe it was a comment that the 462L would not work for the lower lobe deck of the 747 because it would have to be tilted?
Since we were only being trained to be back ups should we go to war and the civilian fleet would be called up, it was a one time training course. Since my work in Supply WRSK required me to be very aware of load planning for 130's and 141's I followed up with acquiring a 5-lvl as a Load Master.
Captain Joe should be a marketer π...the ad for the key ring was epic
Dear Captain Joe, one topic would be interesting at them moment: storing aircraft. What has to be done to store them (is there still fuel in the tanks)? Do aircraft need normal maintenance or C/D-Checks while standing around for some weeks? Are they getting moved around to prevent damages of immobilisation? How long does it take, to get them into service again? A video would be great!
*_Most informative, thank you for this insight._*
Love how you made it rain with them Keychains. ππ«
Excellent video, I love it. Thank you for these rich features. π
The bit of muse at the start and end of this video fits far to well.

That's a very informational video. The world is at a huge risk of economic crisis. I wish everyone to stay safe during this pandemic and things to go back to normal as fast as possible.
layed off once i have a job will so buy key chain love it. and your videos are amazing. i dont work in the field but watch all of your videos. thanks for all you do
Back in the day (way back!) when there was no Hairbrush, only Boing and Dougal the latter two made combi versions of their standard types. These could carry passengers AND cargo on the upper deck. The 707-320C comes immediately to mind. It had a big upwards opening cargo door not far behind the cockpit. As time went on and airports became more passenger centric, with airbridges the norm, cargo was handled in special cargo aprons by dedicated types. This meant no longer the need for these "Combi" types.
I remember those golden days as an "air spotter" in the late sixties as a teenager (in the UK). The Beatles were all still alive and together! Truly happy days!!!
Very good video in this situation!
Your videos are really very interesting!
Stay safe Captain Joe π
Awsome thank you for ur explantion
Thx... as informative as ever... thumbs up... well done!
Can you do a video about what βminimumsβ are on landing?? Thanks :)
Minimums is the minimum altitude where the pilot has to decide to continue landing or to make a go-around. Minimums means the altitude where the pilot must see the runway or the runway lights, and if they are not visible the landing must be aborted.
@Mike P thanks!
@@mikep9604 yes thank you.
Thanks, Captain Joe!!!
Thank you π C.p Joe watching from Namibia π³π¦ Windhoek
Imagine a a380 from emirates that is used for cargo. The pilots can go to the first class suit instead of to their "bed" during the controlled rest hahaπ
I think back in the 70s Lockheed made a version of the L1011 that could convert from passenger flights during the day and then fly cargo by night. It only took a few hours to convert.
It could be a different model of plane but regardless it didnβt catch on in the industry.

Hi Joe. Jet 2 run some older 737s from Edinburgh that carry pax during the day then post at night. I believe the planes have a wide opening door and the seats are rapidly removed.
THANK YOU for the keyrings :) i could not resist and bought a pack even if they are not available at the moment. Everyone stay healthy
Great video captain !
I have a question, what are yaw dampers ?
Multirole aircraft in the Royal Air Force were a reality many years ago. The venerable VC10 was purpose built as PCF (Pax-Cum-Freight) aircraft with cargo doors on the main deck and floor restraints built in. Side guidance and rollers were fitted to the floor restraints for aircraft pallets. The floor restraints could also be used for cargo nets and chains for wheeled loads. We used to put Land Rovers on the VC10.
The RAF PCF Tristar was a conversion, it had a cargo door fitted at Marshall's of Cambridge and could be loaded with standard 108 x 88 inch aircraft pallets. Seating and galleys were on pallets and could be configured in various mixes of passengers and freight.
It would be interesting to see civil PCF aircraft being used for remote community airports, so that aircraft don't operate only half full of passengers with the spare space used for freight.
Thanks a lot joe
