    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
First off the question why passengers and most flight crew enter from the left hand side of the aircraft. When you walk down the air bridge or up the stairs into an aircraft you almost always enter through the front or second left door usually called L1 or L2 Left. There are some exceptions such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 which often board through both the front and aft left hand doors using mobile staircases to speed up the boarding process. Pretty familiar with EasyJet and RyanAir for example. And some regional Turboprop Aircraft like the ATR 42 and 72 board through the aft left hand door only as often the forward part is for cargo loading.
So we see that the door number can change from aircraft to aircraft but it is always on the left side of the aircraft which you enter from. The reason for this is due to many things in aviation related to maritime industry.
Before the invention of the centralized rudder, many old ships were directed by steering oars or boards on the back right hand side of the ship. The term starboard which refers to the right side of the ship or aircraft comes from the old English word โ€œsteer-boardโ€ meaning the side from which the ship is steered. Because the ships were steered from the right or starboard side, the boat would dock on the left side for loading and unloading, hence the left is called the โ€žPort sideโ€œ. Iโ€™m guessing a few โ€žA-ha momentsโ€œ right there. This tradition of loading on the left has continued into the era of flying boats where passengers come on board from the left hand side using the piers and ramps boats had used before until todays modern jet era.
This also allows cargo and service vehicles to attach from the right hand side so that ground crew and refuellers can do their work without hundreds of passengers being too close to sensitive or potentially dangerous areas and equipment. The right hand doors can also be used for wheelchair access lifts if the aircraft is not connected to an air bridge.
Nowadays many airports are built specifically for boarding from the left handside , sometimes with even two airbridges above each other to cater for the upper deck of the Airbus A380. Or to board first class and business separately from economy. Overtime airlines have established their before flight procedures around the left handside of their planes in order to welcome passengers entering through the forward left door. Even the cabin interior is set up to board from the left, on Easyjets Airbus A319 and A320 you donโ€˜t board through the narrow galley kitchen on the right, you come from the wider entrance on the left. Just look out for that the next time you board an orange plane.

Thanks Captain Joe. The Port/Starboard explanation was very enlightning. I've heard it before but your explanation and graphic were crystal clear. I always imagined the steering oar was on the right because 90% of people are right handed and so it would make sense to have the dominant hand and thus the best grip on that side. Interestingly from my reading in history it is not clear if the Romans only used the right. Depictions show both. Egyptians left models that show oars mounted both sides but since they were not attached to the boats, but lashed, that could be a river navigation issue. The tradition of having the steering oar on the right is most certainly inherited from those expert seafarers, the Norsemen. They used attached steering oars with complex leverage mechanisms that were always on the right for single right handed operation.
Not a pilot and I don't fly a lot but I am a fan of aircraft of all types. Love your content.

I believe the reason also why passengers board on the left, could be also a throwback from the horse and buggy days. When you want to get on a horse, you get up on the left side of the horse. Don't worry, I do love horses and I am also interested in aviation. But thank you for a wonderful video. By the way, you put your left foot into the stirrup after you twist the stirrup, grab a hold of the horn of the saddle...or the front of the English saddle...and pull your self up. @Brotha in Beijing Trump supporters are learning that the Democratic leadership has put so much effort into hating and undermining the duly elected President that they made what would have been a bad four years much worse, and when they realized they needed to nominate a candidate, the best they could come up with was Biden, practically guaranteeing Trump's re-election.

@Brotha in Beijing Haven't reviewed the material specific to the alleged Russian interference yet, but unemployment was lower during Trump's presidency than at any tome during the previous eight years. While he is not well-spoken, and should have suspended his Twitter account on taking office, Trump was not as bad as you believe. A common criticism is his response to the Covid-19 situation. It is now common knowledge that the numbers are unreliable on this, because healthcare facilities received money from the government based on the number of Covid-19 cases reported, so they over-reported cases. Trump's supporters have not put lipstick on a pig, his opponents have put fangs on it.

Usually when I board the fasten seat belt sign is already on. I have never been on a flight where they tell you not to fasten your safety belt during refueling. Usually at my airport they time the refueling before passengers board. The comment about a fire truck on stand-by while refueling is interesting. We have so many gates at Philly Intl that it would conceivably take 1truck per concourse or roughly about 6 trucks which doesn't sound like a lot but that is a lot of manpower considering each truck contains a driver, a Captain, and at least two firefighters. That would be a total of 24. The fireboard station is close however and they train constantly so it's pretty safe.

Great video as always! I once got a tour of a maintenance hangar and 'boarded' the aircraft there from the right. You don't realize how strange it is until you do it.
Also, the Lockheed L1011 had a door in the right lower fuselage to access the lowered galley. Don't know if any passengers ever got through that but it is a special feature of the Tristar.
