Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
Today we will take a closer look into the cold weather certification process, especially on the recent newly launched Airbus A220. Why do planes need to get this certification, what is it good for and how is it done.
β¦.
Now, what is the reason for such testing and certification? Mainly, itβs all about the performance of the plane after being exposed to these extreme temperatures, without any sources of heat to prevent the crucial parts from cooling down too far. While resting for the previously mentioned 12 hours, everything cools down to the outside temperature. That brings some issues, starting with the materials an aircraft is made of. When cooled, metal and other materials have the characteristic that they contract. The problem here is, that different materials contract at different rates, meaning that some materials contract more than others at the same temperature. In aviation, a variety of materials is used for different purposes. Contracting at different rates, puts some serious stress especially on structural parts and on the engines.

Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!

The A220 is such a beautiful machine. I almost wish I had one in my garage.
As long as you have a few million dollars lying around and a garage thatβs big enough π
You certainly can! Airbus is releasing the ACJ TwoTwenty soon
The yellow plane behind you is one letter short of being debris. π

Oh god nobody fly that plane

3:38 "taxied onto the tArMAc" oh nooo
captain joe
what has happened
What has happened to this world saying TaRMaC
Same
@Isaac George lol i couldnt find anyone else who made this comment so i made my own
Why does everyone seem to have a problem with the word 'tarmac'? What's wrong with it?
Olga D. it's a fake word that doesn't actually exist in aviation
in the aviation community it is a sin to say the word tarmac
Basically every government: "No gatherings above 100 people or more in same spot"
Captain Joe and the boys: Huh what?
Gathering in a hangar π
Just need a big screen..
The Czech Republic just announced no more than 30 :D
Eh, you guys better pray that the Covid drama settles down by April or so.
You can be sure that Joe produces the content of his videos well in advance.
@@7636kei you are right it will calm down by april 2021 when the final survivors pass.
3:08 - Kudos for showing the clip from when Buffalo Airways recreated the Dambusters raid!
Joe, could you, please, as a cargo aircraft pilot make a video about converting passenger aircraft to a cargo one? Thank you in advance and I wish you at least a "diamond button" in a closer future ;)
I would have to ask Boeing for that!
Good Idea! Joe this might be of interest. Keep up the great work! www.elbeflugzeugwerke.com/en/freighter-conversion/a320a321-p2f/
Airbus had Mikey from Buffalo Air take down the footage a few weeks ago of the 220 at their ramp on his vlog...much respect for your mention of BA and the tee shirt
For an example on how the cold can have devastating consequences if a machine/vehicle isn't built for it lookup the Challenger disaster.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger_disaster
TL;DR: The O-ring seals in the SRBs weren't designed to handle very cold conditions (like it was the morning of the launch) so when they launched anyway the hot gasses where able to breach the seal resulting in the loss of the vehicle and crew.
The Challenger example is very good as it was temperature related.
The Aloha Airline example shown was a poor example as it was corrosion related do to extensive use in a coastal area (salt)
I just had Airbus come for winter testing with an A320neo in Iqaluit, Nunavut! The month prior they came with an A350-1000! I worked like a dog but both missions were amazing experiences!
The space shuttle _Challenger_ blew up because an O-ring got too cold---even in Florida---and no longer provided a seal.
Also, very nice demonstrations.
Finally the sound volume has been fixed! :) Great video as always. :)
Thanks for the feedback! Means a lot!
Thank you for saying Bombardier (Γ©) correcttly!!!!
Love the vids joe they are very informative from an aspiring pilot from the uk
Good video on practical thermal issues cap Joe! Bonus feature: Maravilloso el Piper Super Cubπ
Capt joe just got my ppl pushing for that CPL β€οΈπ€£
The C-series comes back to its home here in Canada! But thank you Airbus for saving us.
Hey, a Piper Cub - 65 horsepower, 65 Miles per hour cruising airspeed ( about 102 kph ). Flying at its best. Stick and rudder. Years ago there was a clip wing Piper Cub that did a good aerobatic routine at the local airshows N432X. I haven't seen that Cub for quite a while. Great video, Joe. Years ago they cold weather certifications in northern Minnesota. In that region it is no longer cold enough.
How they measure horsepower on plane I only know on cars
Hi joe! I love your videos and you are my fav KRplusr! Keep up the good work
Wow! The learnings are endless! So many things we take for granted are tested to the extremes. Thank you Captain Joe for this insight.
Beautiful cub! Fly it!
My sleep paralysis demon is going to kill me right after I finish watching this.
I see a huge step forward in the quality of videos, not that it was bad before. Keep it up!
really hoping i can come to the tour when youβre in oxford π. great video as always π
Captain joe I really admire your youtube channel and you inspired me to be a pilot when I grow up.
Excellent, well done!
Amazing video as always!
This was a very good video! I liked that you got technical but not too much. The demonstrations were great too! Love your channel!
I like the design of the A220. Looks quite nice.
The folks at Yellowknife were mighty proud to host the new Canadian-made plane.
Thank you very much for the explanation!
I think the A220 is an amazing plane! (Both for pilots and passengers!)
Great video thanks joe !
CAPT. JOE THANKS FOR CONTENT!
Thanks for a great video one again. See you next week π
Great video captain joe !
Always a very professional video production capt joe
MΓ©thanier you @flywithcsptainjoe for letting me watch the first thing today not relating to Covid-19. What a relief! Great video BTW and nice to see this bit about an aircraft which was basically developed in my hometown (MontrΓ©al). Cheers!
Damn Autocorrect - the message started with THANK YOU
Thanks buddy, I know the Covid-19 is slightly overwhelming at the moment!
I find it easy to understand the topic everytime Joe is the one who explains it.
You Dad appears to have an impressive shed, I reckon you learned some stuff in there ......
Good explanations too πππ¬π§
great one caption happy landings !!!!love from miami
Quality video captain
This video is a class of science. Fantastic explanation about the interference of heat and cooling in airplanes. I also like the examples showed in his father shop. Great video.
Excelent video! Thank you!
Best Channel ! No BS
Thanks Mike!
Joe: Yellowknife, northwest Canada
Me: No, Yellowknife Northwest Territories
Ha Ha, good one .
Ho Canada we stand on Guard for thee
You forgot to put βehβ after if youβre talking about Canada. Eh. (Iβm soary about dat eh π)
I would love to see you in may Joe π
As usual, great video. I didnβt know that they have to do this type of certification for turbofan engines. In extreme cold, I usually see turboprop as a standard carrier. Kudos.
@captainjoe I LOVE THESE VIDEOS WHERE YOU APPLY PHYSICS TO REAL AVIATION!!!!!! VERY HELPFUL!! PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!! :) :) :)
Getting on a plane scares me , yet Iβm here watching. ππππ loving that jacket captain joe π
Great video Cpt.
The APU creates that vapor!
I like that there is no English word for "Bolzensprenger"!
actually it means "Bolt Blaster" (according to Google Translate).
Tyndall's bar breaker.
One of the best capt.β€οΈ
Samrat Pandey heβs a F/O lol
I love your videos
Very informative ππ
Cool video - thanks!
And rocking the Buffalo shirt!
Very interesting as is all your videos
Cheers joe
Just 2 months ago I was talking to an airline pilot that hangs out at my flight school about trouble they were having with pre-flight at Edmonton Canada. While the water truck was stored in a heated garage the rubber water supply hose was left outside and it was so cold that it had become brittle and so it burst when pressure was applied and this sprayed the plane making a solid layer of ice which also got inside the door and made them get out hot air blowers to thaw the latch, the whole deal took like 3 hours. They were only about 3 degrees above certification temperature.
Impressive Capt 'showtime' Joe intro.
All the best for the May conference.
Hey Joe, Iβve always wanted to be a pilot since a very young age. Iβve also been flying since I was super young too. But now Iβve grown older and youβve inspired me even more to be a pilot and youβve taught me a lot about flying! Also, Iβm planning to come and see you in may as I live in Britain. I just wanted to thank you :)
And, do you are a pilot now. Because, if you are not, go to your local gliding club take practice and make your license. It is the purest form of flying, it is cheap (but you need a lot of time) and it is the first step to become a air(wo)man. And it is almost always fun. With the glider pilot license you can only fly for fun, or make long distance flights and you can do with the propper licence glider aerobatics too.
Very good class simple and well explained by captain Joe ππ»π¦π
Very Interesting & Well Done! CJ
You need to come to South Africa please I love your shows
Hey Joe,
It is my dream to become a pilot and your videos are very interesting to me and they help me to improve my English expertise.
I like your videos so much.
Would love a follow-up explaining how they get such a cold plane started up! Thanks for this one. :)
Sweet!
Nice one ππ π₯π― and btw I'm always watch your videos
Love seeing you in casual clothing
I always have a little chuckle at pre-covid videos, especially showing travel and groups of people. It seems so alien now
A good pilot is always earning :-)
Thank you!!
Still the CSeries from the Quebec I grew in
I love your video and I want to be like you you are amazing
Captain Joe the celebrity tour ! Some of us were not aware would be curious as to its purpose? Promoting aviation, certain aircraft, mentoring future pilots? Thank you joe!
Fascinating as usual.
Did not know you also lectured-- excellent to hear. Your straightforward manner does well.
I knew you were a teacher but not the "big room" of lecturing.
Joe I can understand you your speech is as magnificent you are a good talker and I can understand one day I want to be a pilot of a 747 just like you you are my idol keep it up joe all the bestππ
Means a lot! Thanks!
Captain Joe ur welcome I watch every video you upload. When I'm down I always watch you you always make me laugh and I just love your videos if you come to Australia I would love to hear your speech and talking here.. One day
Toll geschnitten !!!
Do a video about the purpose of flaps
Love your channel too!
Great to see you wearing a Buffalo t-shirt to support our friends in Yellowknife. Captain Joe and Mikey McBrian - aviation's dream team π
@Captain Joe - Missed ya buddy :)
Hello Captain Joe and thanks for your videos! May I ask if you could maybe raise the volume of your voice when recording or in post? It's always a big difference when I view other channels and then come to one of your videos which are more quieter. Keep up the good work and stay healthy!
That is so interesting
Yelloknive is also good for spotting auroras. Been there. And it has got a very good restaurant ;-)
Nicely explained. Has the issue about fuel movement from wings to fuselage tank post parking sorted out in A220?
(1.)Very good video; good job mentioning Boeingβs neglect of the market (@Boeing 717-200).
(2.)Who else still calls it the CSeries?
Me
That new intro is amazing! Any chance to see you in Hamburg/Germany soon?
He was just on the Pilot Expo in Berlin end of last month (that's where the footage is from)
@@poblaablubb7773 Berlin is still a cool 3hr drive from Hamburg mate, I don't have that much time at the moment...
I mean you could go to the airport and wait...
great vid
Nice jacket bro
Really interesting video
trust me, I would love to meet you on your tour, If I weren't italian....unfortunately we are all stuck in our country because of the virus....πππ
Very cool video β very informative will you be making any more cockpit videos Joe
All in good time in my friend
@@flywithcaptainjoe thanks buddy me and my daughter Rebecca love your work βπ
A long story short: Congrats from Luxembourg
Newcastle is one word!
Person who laughing at 1:15 sec is unique laugh... But i can't why he was laughing π
That's Mikey McBryan! It's part of his KRplus series, Plane Savers!
When are you coming to Australia mate love to see one of your shows
When are you going to make a video of how to change the tires on a 747? Great video.
TLK how about changes taking on a 737 Max, oh never mind they donβt last long enough to worry about it.
I like video thankyou
Habe dich auf der Pilot Expo gesehen βοΈβοΈ
Very concise video i must say. The experiments add to the understanding for those who are willing to get into the technical parts ;-)
Good video ππ
Hi joe I am travelling to Munich soon just wondering have you seen the Olympia park and there e-scooters
Captain Joe: Uploads a new video.
Me: Likes the video before watching it.ππ»ππ»
