I can only second on the โlearn something else firstโ. I wanted to become an airline pilot, but I forced myself to finish my MSc in physics. It turns out that I ended up continuing in that same field, and I am glad I can still work as a medical physicist rather than be grounded or jobless with no other perspective.
So, you can still be a pilot? or did you not attain a bachelor of aviation or anything of the sort?

Thank you for video! I am flying for PPL and I really hope situations gets better very soon. The good thing here in Slovenia is that ATPL theory is free as part of mechanical engineering university. That means you are a mechanical engineer and civil pilot (ATPL theory) after finishing university.

Captain Joe, your the man. Just as Pilots are always learning, I promote "always learning" within my small software engineering team. Having "Plan B" is very important. The professions in the airline industry that you mentioned (mechanic, ramp agent) will be very helpful to those in the pilot training pipeline or those wanting to get into the pipeline. Working on the ramp, getting close to turboprop or turbojet engines, the smell of JP5 in the morning, that is the best. I'm very stoked after viewing this video.

Great video! I can relate to this as a current ATPL flight student... In some ways it's scary, but there's always hope for the future, even though the path to that future in the air may be long and cumbersome. For anyone who's thinking about becoming a pilot, I would definitely recommend the first option to study at uni BEFORE flight training. Not only does it give you a backup plan, it also gives you a lot of life experience which helps you get through the selection processes of flight schools. Moreover, studying something before rather than after flight training will generate a whole lot less stress in situations like this, because YOU know that you have a backup in the pocket! Also, make sure you find different ways of generating some income. Never only rely on one source. If you look carefully and work hard, you will be able to generate multiple small sources of income, which in the end gives you more certainty. If you are genuinly motivated to become a pilot and work hard, you will get there no matter what! Good luck to all! :)

What about Studying and doing ATPL at the same time? I found a few University's that offer this.

I can recommend studying before flight school any time! I've heard too many stories of people losing their medical and only having the option of becoming a flight instructor...
And even when forgetting about corona: Studying will significantly elevate your chances at better positions during your pilot career. With different degrees, you can become e.g. a technical pilot, base manager, fleet captain besides just flying, which will definitely increase your salary...
Wise advice. That's what I'm currently doing :) I started aeronautical engineering studies so it'll give me 5 years (5 years in France to graduate as an aeronautical engineer) to finish my PPL, prepare for my ATPL and my IR (and get better at english) :)

These are good recommendations. But in reality it is not easily practicable for a lot of people. Studying or learning a new profession is only useful if you make it to some sort of graduation. Is the time span you are waiting in total enough to reach this point? Doing internships is also very recommended, but the chances of finding one (that is actually useful) during times of extreme hygiene measures and limitations are really low, unless the company you work with has some solution. The best recommendation is to bridge waiting times with work. But finding a job, for example, during this year's crisis was really hard, and if you got one, it often barely let you pay your monthly expenditures.

Just from a bean counting perspective, aviation doesn't make sense, you will spend a lot of money to buy what is essentially a burger flipping job (most pilots don't make much, the ones that do are a really tiny %). But bean counting isn't everything.

It's almost impossible to "just get another job" during this crisis. In past recessions or depressions normally people could still try to bridge the gap by waiting tables, working retail, or some other menial job, but even that isn't possible now because of health restrictions on basically any job that requires you to interact with people directly.
There's almost nothing to do unless you have some white-collar tech job that allows you to work from home.

Hey captain, im a student pilot, started my course almost 2 years ago and it was going really good, passed all the theory exams and was about to start the cross-country flights, when all this happened. Im worried as all the pilots are, thats natural, we have did connection to sky and somehow the world managed to take it away from us. Thanks for the advices and for all the interesting information that you share with us! I think I'm going to learn something new or just some basic skills, like cooking better or something like that (I'm 20 yrs old, I'm not the best cooker, not gonna lie๐).

I'm an airline pilot, and for what we are facing i suggest you to extend your studies, first put large gaps between each flights, to end your academic studies around the end of 2021, to avoid any expiry between finishing the academy and finding a job, during this period applies for any job, any job teach you a lot of new stuff, and during airline interview is really appreciate or start any study you may like at university, entering at 20 years old is easier than 17/18 as you are more mature and more prone to study properly and bachelors combined with your cpl/ir are really appreciate on the airlines because piloting will form your carisma, team managment and authority, so with a bachelor you can be assigned to the respective department on your older age

After secondary school I studied a double bachelor degree in Commerce (Economics) and Law at the University of Queensland... one on the most prestigious universities in Australia. But after 6 months I dropped out because I didn't like it. I switched to a Computer Science degree, which later became my profession. So just pursue the profession which you love, because ultimately you will be very good at it, because it matters to you :-) Cheers.

How bad is it? Don't lose hope. Do you know a lot about Bush pilots? Check if you can clear your medicals first.

To be a pilot, you need to at least be able to get your vision corrected, so, contacts or glasses may work. Iโd stick with contacts so if you fly passengers, you wouldnโt scare them. Donโt give up on your dream!
Ya know your allowed to use glasses to fly, you just legally have to use them while flying
If I remember correctly the only thing related to eye sight that will stop you totally from being a pilot is being color blind.

I donโt blame the person that started COVID-19 they couldnโt have known and if they did they probably wouldnโt have done it. They probably assumed what they were doing was harmless because they had done it many times before and it had all been alright. Also itโs important to remember that they may not have had the means to but conventional meat.

Thanks for giving WMU a shout out! I'm finishing up my Commercial Multi at the moment there. It was crappy when Covid hit because I had to stop at the tail end of my training. Also my instructor at that time had his employer class dropped and later he had to move because he had no job as a instructor.
Good news from WMU College of Aviation is that we are back open, but only for those close to getting any Certifications or Ratings. We still have social distancing when able and Sanitation is done before and after every flight.

Iโm 16, 17 this August and have a year of school left. Iโve always wanted to go straight to flight school but this is probably going to make me go to university or do an apprenticeship. If anyoneโs got anything useful to say Iโd love to hear it!
A little late I guess, but I graduated in 2019 in the same boat as you, minus the pandemic. I started at one university and am now at another, studying business informatics and also working at a paid internship. It's not what I want to do forever, but it's great experience and at the end will be a great fallback. Plus, I can save for flight school. Since you posted this a while ago, what did you end up doing, if I may ask?
@@hurricane7800 well I'm still at school, it's literally ending in 5 days but I'm going to university now to do geography. I'm not particularly excited about going but it will give me another 3 years to think and the industry to recover. I have also reconsidered a career in the military so there's a good chance I'll end up doing that for 10-15 years and then going into the airline industry a bit later but highly employable and experienced

Well mate, if you don't have the money for college or flight training you can learn and rack up hours joining the navy or Air Force.
Depends where you live, if you look at going with a legacy carrier in the US yea that's the case, otherwise in the EU that's does not seem to be the case.

am trying to figure out wht exactly to do with my lifee , was considering medical just cuz society expects tht even tho i know i dont like science labs etc as much , i was considering law,economics or pilot training nd i literally never felt so lost beforee :((((

uni is also something i wanna experience and i cant decide if i should do pilot training cuz tht uni experience wouldnt be there i wanna make frnds and memries but also earn alot of money and be successful like i always wanted as i come from a middle class background sorta ..
also this whole corona virus BS made me consider whether its a good idea to enter uni when everthing is online currently and for awhile it seems :((

@@shivampatel9602 I don't know about all but it's definitely a thing in the US. Going to a major airline, one could get a job on a B777. It might take 7, 10, or more years to reach captain. It's also worth remembering that captain is not guaranteed. It's generally much quicker to reach captain for the 737 but pay is generally lower for it. Things to think about.

@@aena5995 follow your most favorite passion (which I think is to become a pilot) and also, this whole covid BS will end soon (in a year or so I think) what my family is saying that to first have a backup (my parents are saying to study BTEC then go for pilot license so if I didn't get the license, I have go for another job). And also, this is just my opinion, you can ask your parents for your support.
