The patience this man has is next level lol 😂
Video may be from 2013 but shout out to the camera guy for asking all of the newbie questions. Appreciate the knowledge and clear explanations.
I hope this guy lives forever.

Here here!
Ive used this video so many times now to build shortblocks I think I owe it to mike to buy him a workbench, or at least a foam kneeguard
I'm so glad the guy behind the camera is asking all those questions
I know, and it even helps that the guy is so patient.
Absolutely , even the rhetorical questions.
@@sebastiancastaneda7418 I'm a medium/large bore diesel engine mechanic. If you rush a re-build, you lose the engine. The patience also carries over to equipment electrical troubleshooting.
Not all heroes wear capes
I'm gon have to send him one! Such details man ! Bravo!
This video should be called "HOW TO REBUILD A SUBARU ENGINE FOR DUMMIES" This is prob one of my favorite engine rebuild videos, giving me confidence to tackle my spun bearing sti engine.
KFLY67 How'd it go?
How was it ?
I did 5 engines using this video. They are still running (6 years) as new. Thank you.
Vasily Bondarenko On the piston rings. The oil ring gap can go anywhere, while the oil control ring and the compression ring face 180 deg on the wrist pin side? That part was confusing. As far as which rings to face 180 deg from each other.
I have found the promised land. This is the good side of youtube
Two reason I watch KRplus subaru cars and music
This is what KRplus is for. Best source of information. I've learned how to work on my cars, fix household appliances, and even vaccine puppies. Lol
He is Subaru Jesus
He's a retired Pro Subaru mechanic. He's simply the best.
Please do not ever take this video down! It is very useful to the Subaru community. I can just watch this times and times again.
What a guy! No garage no shop. Just rebuilding an engine in the side of the road.
that feel when you're waging the possibility of building your own engine, but you're too affraid, and you find this video....
This man's videos I've been watching all day and I'm getting major confidence and knowledge on rebuilding my freaking wrx
This guy is a living service manual... :D
Mike the mechanic & the cameraman make the perfect pair for teaching this stuff. Mike knows his shit and the cameraman asks the perfect questions for someone who isn't a mechanic but wants to learn to do it correctly.
The ambient bird and suburbia noises are extremely relaxing and are complemented well by his voice.
Watching this at 1 am, I don't know why. I don't even own a car.
Beloved Lover Trust me I have no idea, I drive a Honda these days.. but damn do I want to build an engine now.
Beloved Lover lol me too, i dont even own a Subaru lol 1230am
Beloved Lover LMAO me too, but at 2:30 am
Beloved Lover Ahahahah great !!! :) :)
Beloved Lover I got a ford focus but this is engrossing. Always did want a subaru...
This is probably one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. Big thanks to both of you for making this great video!!!
This video should be a tutorial on how to make a tutorial. The cameraman not knowing too much about the boxer and asking questions about everything seems slightly annoying, but is actually crucial to comprehension. If he gets it, we get it. Amazing video.
I watch this 2-3 times a year, just to keep the process fresh in my head. damn I gotta get back into Subarus
Evan Nuzum Just commenting as a reminder for you to come back for your yearly refreshment.

"What's your intentions with those parts???"
That got intense quick! I felt like I was in an episode of Law & Order there. The tension was excruciating. Holy 3rd degree in that scene!
Anyways, awesome video I'm hoping that my WRX engine doesn't spin a rod and I have to do this!
I know right LOL the Guy made it tense like it was a FAA Flight mishap or something.. XD Damn, those questioning tactics made me felt uncomfortable
Those interrogation questions make me felt uncomfortable LOL. Roswell-ish
haha i know the cameraman needs a punch to the cranium
See if i tried to learn this from my father, hed be THAT guy to yell at me at every step... (like im suuposed to know what exactly to do at every step) however you are just as calm as can be teaching people who dont know that wish to learn. Thank you for this video.
RIKU HARDY dads will be dads hahaha.
Try working with him once lol. Its not as easy as it looks from this video!! Haha
I know the struggle man, the worst part is we are driven to learn this stuff too
Its hard to find a guy who really knows what he is talking about, this one IS the case, thnks for the upload
The camara man is the best! Asking all the proper questions and answering everyones questions without people asking 🙏🏻
Just watching Mike is better than going to a technical school! Nice work Mike, and thank you for sharing your skills with us!
1998 Subaru Legacy owner :)
I am not building a Subaru engine, nor do I have any plan to; in fact, I don't even own a Subaru. But I still watched the whole video all the way through. Excellent job!
i dont own one either, but i watched it all too. i do plan on getting one in future tho :)
I thought I was the only... ^_^
My knees are killing me just watching this. Good detailed video!
When I was at uni I would often see (much younger than my older self) people struggling with various concepts. I developed a jam with my lecturer where I would ask what many would call a dumb question that gave him an avenue to explain the question in an equally "dumb", but entirely different way. You could see heads shoot up and nod across the room as people groked on.
I feel that energy between the cameraman and Mike. Asking the "dumb" questions to make sure there is plenty of space to explain a concept. Especially stuff like "in the world of computers, it makes a difference", because despite knowing my way around an engine bay, my IT monkey brain still chirped up with "Are we talking clean room clean? Finger grease on my precious new DIMMs clean?". I learned stuff I didn't even know I needed to know here.
Revolutionary and organic approach gents, I love it.
Very impressive, well explained, very technical, people pay money to get such a lecture, well done
Wish you were my neighbor. Lol
haha seriously
+Derek Camacho THis the kinda thing that never gonna happen
hahaahaha
me 2! im rebuilding mine and this video is a perfect walk through.
if that was the case you'd really be subaru broke!!
That was therapeutic to watch.
As a v-block guy, it's insane to think about installing the wrist pins after the block is assembled. Very informative stuff.
My knees are killing me just watching this. Good detailed video!
I discovered knee pads many years ago. An ex plumber advised me to use them - she had ruined her own knees through years of bare kneeling on cold wet floors.
I was expecting to only watch a few minutes of it, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Great video, thank you!
I stumbled across this channel by accident on Saturday, put this video up on the TV to play in the background while making my morning coffee. In what seemed like minutes, I found I had spent hours watching Subi Mike assemble, remove, and disassemble various boxer engines. I loved every second of it. I don't even care if there are repeats on subject matter. I want more. This is strangely both relaxing and stimulating in an ASMR kind of way.
this video was made 3 years ago, still helped me soo much. thanks for making this
Its about an engine rebuild and it will be valid 100 years from now. That model of engine will never change. People who restore cars way, way in the future will find this video just as useful as the day it was made. That's the great thing about making these kinds of videos. They never go obsolete like technology or viral videos.
i also appreciate this video. i remember watching it 2 years ago before i got a subi and now im on my second subi doing a building watching it again and its still a great video and very helpful
electric vehicles are on their way in. 4-stroke engine's days are numbered. I'm still grateful for the video as I have an EJ25 SOHC. Thanks for posting. Please try to get Mike to do more Subaru videos especially those with CVT transmissions. Even a briefing from him on it would be great, but anything Subaru thanks!
I think your counting chickens before they hatch. I remember going to a lecture in which it was predicted that v=8 engines would be gone before the end of the decade. that was in 1975. this was the common wisdom of all the domestic man of the time. this went into the planing of future products. the reason the borg-warner 5speed trans was never used behind a 350 sbc in the camaro or firebird was it was designed for 4cyl & v-6 power level, specifically the torque ie: twisting force. Even the new 4spd OD auto (700R4) had a habit of blowing up if driven to hard again designed for lower power engines.
In 3057, when others are flying around in cold fusion powered hoverboots, gear heads will be running those obnoxious exploding engines in this contraption with 4 round things attached to it around 2 cones in an abandoned parking lot (everyone gets everything delivered by rocket drones now).
As long as there's liquid carbon to return to the atmosphere, we will be fucking doing it. Your great grandchildren's grandchildren will be reenacting races preserved forever on Ancient Relics called "Hard Drives" and "DVDs". What we do today will be archived forever, people in the future will see all our videos of NASCAR races and want a shot at it themselves. Motorsports will never die, it will only evolve. Even if it's hoverboot racing (Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm is a great anime about this, basically. If you're into that kind of thing.) men will go fast and/or die trying.
I feel like i just went to Subaru motor school. Thank you for the time and extreme attention to detail.
I am a seasoned technician with over 10 years of experience and I thoroughly enjoyed this video and appreciate the sharing of knowledge. Keep up the good work.
I work for Subaru and the guys they hire at the training center are literally nothing compared to this man, learned less in my two-day class about EJ engines than I did from this man in an hour and a half. And they wonder why all the techs nowadays are idiots
We should set this guy up with a gofundme to build a high HP shortblock capable of supporting 800whp. If he were to document the parts sourcing, breakdown, and building of this project the results would be priceless..
My impreza uk turbo had big end bearing failure and after watching these videos my car is now running a built ej207 witch I built myself....I'd never touched an engine before building this one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all.
As an engineer this explanation is technically and mechanically easy to under stand, thank you , keep keep it up
Watching this video so far, makes me wonder if I chose the wrong career path. I find it very interesting. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
what do you do? & what do you want to do as a career?
acruz691 I am currently a Web Developer who races cars on the side. I am thinking of going into another career.
+Subaru Racer Do it.
@@GargantulaKon XD I'm webdev who races cars on the side. Did you do it?
Did you switch careers? I'm hoping they cover transmissions and awd next
This is such a unique video because it seems like the guy building the engine is a genius when it comes to engines, and the cameraman is playing the role of a normal person that might not know everything about engines, but is curious. It's such a perfect duo because someone following this to build their own engine would probably ask similar clarifying questions. Great work!
I drive a turbo cobalt and for some reason watched this whole video, well done and informative for a noob like myself. Thanks!
"Sell it as a boat anchor" lol
I didn't even realize this is the same channel that taught me how to build a computer. And now it's teaching me how to rebuild and engine. Wow!
Usually it’d be annoyed of someone asking so many questions but thank god he is asking all those questions in this scenario! 🤣
Subaru had to be designed by a mechanic. Easiest engine I've worked on after you destroy the first one with ignorance. Good Luck as Always.
This dude could have the kids on Sesame Street build engines he’s so explanatory and easy to listen to and understand great stuff and I’m building a cortina pinto 🤣
Thanks! Its nice to know at least some of the viewers 'get it.'
Great video ,wish he told the mic measurements, but all I'll in all beggers can't be choosers, THX
this might sound strange but those paper towels are something that everyone needs.. love them
At first I thought “he must be crazy doing that in his driveway”. But he makes it so easy that you can do this in your driveway. Love what your doing and how you show us. Keep up the awesome work and I’m definitely hooked.
i have watched this video over 10 times fully, have slept to the sound of this hero's voice! amazing video thanks for the upload!
Deep learning
Great video, I have been doing automotive machine work for over 40 years & your subaru videos are the best.
I am a Ducati Master Tech! you earned my respect,,,,,,, great video, I just bought a 2002 WRX with 70k , and i was watching informative videos about timing belts and heads on Subarus and thanks God I came across your video! congratulations....
my son and i just got all the 2.5 motor parts back from machine shop. everything standard. now ready to start assy, 1998rs motor, we restore vintage vw beetles buses and have rebuilt 7 motors type 1 and a type 4 ..this is our first subaru..this info really filled in the gaps between the two motors thank you. next project put a 2.2 in a 1957 oval vw beetle once we finish my sons new daily driver 1998 rs with 2.5..we live in iowa and do this as a hobby..
Shout out to Subaru-Mike. A week ago I completed the reinstall of my EJ25 motor in a 2002 Outback. Completely rebuilt the motor using a Haynes Manual and this video. After a week I have 600 miles on the new engine and it literally runs like a new car. Block honed and planed, new pistons, rings, bearings, Oil pump, Water pump, seals. In addition replaced all clutch components including hydraulics. It runs smooth as silk. Thanks so much for sharing the knowledge!!!
Finally somebody one KRplus that does everything step by step. Thank you soo much!!!
Mario Tejada
Sweet
Damn.. I wish i was you mike. SLappin STI short blocks together all day everyday
Finally met Mike today, absolute *LEGEND*
DIRT over TARMAC Where’d you meet him? I wanna get work done by him at his shop.
I like how the camera guy is asking questions. Makes it easier for us to learn, great vid
This video aged very very well!! 👍
I just learned how to check correct ring clearance properly, ring land failure and A/B pistons. After a few more re-watches I might feel comfortable taking on this task. My respect to both the camera man and Mike!
I've watched this 4 times now. Carey's questions are GOOD questions, but don't kid yourself. If you don't know the answers before he asks them, don't build your own motor. Get help. Regardless, great video. Glad you got Mike to do this. Mike, if you're ever in Maricopa let me know and I'll buy you a beer for demonstrating this. Subaru engines are very unique, and this helped me get my engine together.
People use this term lightly, GOD BLESS YOU and thank you very much for taking the time to do this. Highly appreciated!
i watched this for no apparent reason. i thought boxer engines were more complex, good video
Recently blown my engine on 15 STI.
I plan on tackling it myself, after watching this gives me more confidence to.
Great video, keep them coming!
Any update on the sti? I got a 13 wrx and going to do a block test to see if I have a blown head gasket.
This video is fantastic. Good questions from the cameraman, and an experienced teacher to give answers. A+
7 years ago and still teaching people!!! I loved this video and downloaded it and am now on my third time watching it and taking soon many notes!! Thank you so much
I must have taken apart 500 of these little Japanese puzzles but am finally growing the balls to put one back together. Thanks for making a very informative yet simple video on how to get the job done.
Lol what would require you to take a bunch of these apart, but never assemble one?? Not hating just curious what kind of job or situation would require one to only disassemble engines and never assemble them back together.
Imma guess blown enough of these engines to have opened them and see what happened, but decided to buy new or used engine blocks to put in his engine. Cause I’m in the same
Situation where my engines blown and I’m halfway taking it apart deciding whether I should rebuild it(if I can), buy a new block, or just junk the car
best youtube video for me. Want to say thank you to the guy behind the camera and the suburu guru on camera!
thats so cool Carey Holzman uploads automotive videos apart from his PC related stuff
Greta idea with the voice over dude asking questions for us newbies, I was thinking of a question & he asked it, good job boys.
This guy + RatchetsandWrenches = A Godsend! Thanks to both of you!
It's a Friday evening and I'm watching a Master Mechanic put a short block together. It really *is* more interesting than anything else I could be watching or listening to, right now. Very interesting, brings together so much I've seen of separate engine components by showing their physical relationships.
Was about to tune my subaru and got low compression. I feel more informed going into solving that problem after this video. Cheers mate
Awesome video, watched the whole thing with my 2 year old daughter and she was mesmerized. Now I plan on building a new engine for my 2002 wrx cause of this video. Thanks.
You guys don't even know how helpful this is!! Thank you so much for making thiz
This*
I just started getting into Subarus. You really explained how to install new pistons. I couldn't figure that out on my own at all! Thanks very much for taking the time to make the video.
I'm in to computers and Subarus. Oh what heaven it would be to live next to these guys! Great great job Carey and Mike! I'd like to know though Carey how you talked Mike into this. He's very patient with all of your questions!
Stumbled across this video looking up random STi things. I'm not very handy with motors but this makes me feel like I could rebuild mine myself. Thank you so much. Great video for us newbies.
This is honestly the most useful and informative video I have seen on youtube. I'm working on my first subaru motor build right now and this has been an incredible resource.
Congratulations ! The most informative video about EJ25 block, i learned a lot, thanks for your patience in teaching.
Mike, thank you for taking the time to describe this in depth.
Thank you so damn much. Watching videos like this will help when I take the FA20 out of my GT86 in a couple years. It needs a turbo.
Thanks for the very informative video! I just rebuilt a 2.5l Subaru engine. I would have really messed it up without your help. Who would have guessed there would be two different piston sizes.
Thank you very much sir,iam not a professional engine builder, your engine building demo skills made me learn lot of technical things,i have rebuilt at least three ej20 motors by just watching your video and doing some research. All those rebuilt motors are in perfect working condition and still going. You are my master.GOD BLESS YOU.
My God..It's almost 2 am I have work in 3 hours but I can't stop watching.
just bought my first sti 17, and this has helped me understand much more about the engine than i have read in forums, thanks for the vid
After this video came out, the real estate around this guy's house skyrocketed in value.
Why does this video have ANY thumbs down? One of the best instructional videos I've seen. Thank you for the upload and the time making it!
This video is GOLD!! Every inspiring motor head should watch and learn from this video. Thank you Mr Holzman and Subaru-Mike.
Another great video! This is the best channel on KRplus! Shows Americans who can actually do things for themselves...very inspirational! Thanks for your efforts!!
I just want to thank you for these videos Mike. Last summer I removed and installed a new long block EJ25 in my son's 2002 Outback. It's like a new car now. I got so familiar with all the issues that I bought the same car for my daughter. I'm now rebuilding that motor from scratch using this video and several others you've made. Saving me thousands of dollars and it's actually pretty fun. Get all the parts back from the machine shop this week. Again, Thanks!
I have never seen a mechanic this cool and with such Elite knowledge of his craft! May you live forever, and yeah, continue sharing your knowledge as you've always done!
This guy gets his drinks from Speedy's gas station, he's legit.
When ever I feel down that my FRS spun a bearing... I come here and feel better knowing that its possible for my self to fix it. Thank you.
You kick ass! With out your video i would never figured out how get my block apart and back together. I got 93 Subaru EJ18 i just rebuilding with your helpful KRplus. Thanks
Polar Pop and working on a car. This man gets it.
BEST SUBARU ENGINE REBUILT TUTORIAL I EVER WATCHED!! You got my thumbs up like and everything lol
