@Mahdi_ODM nah bruh new ones went down the fiesta route where all the hatchbacks look the same
What theyve done here is making it taller, deform the front by overly angle`ing the headlights (designers most likely thought it looked more "aggressive", when in reality it just looks deformed), slap a huge ass grille on it that makes absolutely no sense, ruin all the lines from the predecessor that actually made sense (its no lines in this new 1 series that makes sense and lines up with other lines, literally none) and direct copy the rear of the Lexus CT200h... Its no inspiration in this cars design at all... Then they made it even worse by removing the biggest selling point of this car, RWD.
I find it staggering that this as well as many other BMW models made it thru the concept stage... It just looks so bad....

Also it has the same chassis so I'd say it's be better to get the 225xe plug-in hybrid which is pretty fun to drive although it does weight a ton.

maybe it's the country or something, but when you see so many bmws on the streets everyday, you actually get used to them and like them. for example the new 1 series actually looks super aggressive in the night with those headlights. whenever I see a hyundai, its just meaningless, i dont even recognize it. but thats even its image here, just a car to get from a to b

The front ruins this whole car....Together with the incredibly bland side line, it is just really ugly. All three German competitors look much better.

@@latlak I think people are WAY overreacting on the MK8 Golf styling TBH. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer the more aggressive looks of the Mk6/Mk7, but it's nowhere near as bad looking as the new 1 Series.
8:21 that is very useful, in most cars I've had, the parcel shelf lived in the house most of the time, even my S-max bar thing was in the house all the time and only went in the car when I sold it, so having it stowed away in the car means I could put it back on after removing whatever blocked it while out.

Thanks for the review. I just would have liked you to have spend a lot more time testing out that DCG in heavy traffic, especially going uphill in go-stop-go conditions. I think all dual clutch gearboxes should be judged by that criteria - just how smooth or jerky they are under those conditions.

Looking at the 2GC for a family member. Interior quality is miles better than Merc equivalent, which is a key deciding factor.

What I meant is used car market.
For example today a BMW M5 costs 100000 pounds(approx) but 12 years later it's value drops to 14000 pounds.
First impression is that they want the front to look more like an A class, but they gave that job to a blind person.
I think Matt do that centre console test to show his muscles 😂😂
Wanted the new 1st series even with the FWD.
The main advantage vs competition is the quality of interior materials which is great overall. In comparison Audi A3 and Mercedes A class are really cheating in places like doors and lower dash.
But then the good news ends.
First the engine, I needed to be a petrol due to high BIK for diesels.
There is too much gap between the boring 118i 140hp and top range M135. There is a need for an in between 120i, and for me the difference to the car I choose ( 182hp) mattered.
But the biggest problem with the 1st series is the price. Firstly you need the M sport trim to be nice. Then the desirable options are not available outside of very,very expensive packages, there is almost no option available on its own.
As a result the price for a nice spec BMW 118i M sport was....prepare to sit down 39K!!!
No way to pay that for a regular hatchback , maybe a high performance but not on earth for a 118i

I think the front would look pretty cool if it weren't for the huge kidneys. And if you think those look big, just take a look at the new M4 or 7 series, they are MASSIVE.

I had the old 1 series 118D M Sport but changed it last year for the 1 series 118i M Sport. had it nearly 12 months and I have to say I'm impressed, I'm glad I have the heated leather seats and Stearing wheel especially in winter. Love this car.
What the fuel economy like, mpg?

I went from a 63 Golf GT 2l diesel mk 7 to the 118 sport and I love it. Got the tech pack and comfort pack so have the fully digital live cockpit. A few other extras including through-loading which gives you the rear arm rest. The 1.5l engine with the DSG is utter crap at low speeds, especially when in economy mode: it’s jerky, the stop-start stops and starts too soon and at lower speeds is clunky. The car is brilliant and I love it but I’m seriously considering changing it due to the engine and gearbox- I’ve had it almost 10 months now.

I bought my current F20 118i BECAUSE of that 8 speed gearbox after having driven the Golf DSG and experiencing exactly what you have and have been wondering about the new DSG. I CU an A class is just a status symbol. It’s nothing more than a cheap entry level Mercedes for people who want other people to think their rich, there bad to drive cheap quality and the fake exhausts in the bumper don’t make it any better andddddd A base a class is so under equipped compaired to a base 1 series.
Jack Henley you don’t have any of this cars aren’t you ? We are having a Cla and an E class, and the Fake Exhaust is on every car today. And does a cheaper car like the Bmw 1 isn’t like a cheaper version then the A class to entry the middle sector ? Poor boy, is speaking against his own arguments.
Plus: the Cla is wonderful to drive, not like a tank and easy to park with bonker

I have owned many 1 series and 5 series. Currently a 2018 1 series M Sport Shadow I have had for 2 years which is generally parked up at work next to one of these new ones. The new one is not a patch on the looks of the previous and doesn’t draw a second glance. Everyone comments on mine and thought the one next to mine was a Mazda or Ford until they saw the badge. Sure it drives superb but would have to up its game for me to change. Keep a hold of mine I think, love it. My wife has one of these anyway but it has a Mini Clubman shell on it 🤔
although the sensation of the rwd is gone like you said, the new one is a damn good daily. can confirm, had both. but i admit, i couldnt imagine living with an f40 until i had it. without the deal i would have never went with this.

bmw’s new designers have no idea what they’re doing with the front and side profile of their car, all their recent cars are hideous, apart from the new 8 series.
The 8 is not bad looking, but it's certainly not good looking either. Considering the price, it might as well be hideous.
Wanna know the worst part? The dude behind this whole mess is the dude thats been the BMW M- division lead designer for years. He recently got promoted or some shit, so now he is the BMW lead designer. As soon as he took the lead of the whole BMW design team, he completely ruined them all.

The 6 cylinder M135i/M140i were the best decisions brought to the 1 series
The thing that made it great was the 50/50 weight distribution. Now I read somewhere that the new m135i is 60/40 to the front as it’s now based on a FWD. they ruined the classic BMW handling

Yea, and i mean if you want the more comfort and space of the new one, you get something else, like Audi A3 or a Golf, or even the Mazda3 which is personally looks way better than most of the competition (including the more "luxurious" competition) but still give the comfort and it have a real nice interior.

So glad I got a 120i 3 years ago. No more RWD, no more “affordable” 4 cyl petrol, and nothing unique in its design. The biggest drawback of my F20 are some quality issues, some parts of the interior tend to be squeaky, hopefully they improved that in F40. Anyway, it’s a great car and there’s no way I’d replace it with that thing.

I have the 125i msport shadow edition 2019 rear wheel drive and it’s just brilliant all round. I have driven the new version and you just can not compare it to the rear wheel drive version.
The other issue is you can no longer get a 6 cylinder version... the old 140i had 6 cylinders, RWD, a better gearbox and looked ( and sounded) better
As long as the load cover can be hidden away in the trunk, Mat will always be satisfied.

My old toyotas automatic gear shifter used to wobble and creak, the transmission is still going after 260k miles.
I'm glad they've added cup holders, my 1st gen 1 series didn't imagine a manufacturer not including them!

The reason bmw germany decided to switch to front wheel drive is because the one series sales was encroaching on the 3 series. The 2nd reason is in terms of cost its cheaper to manufacture the one series on a shared platform ( mini and X1)
It actually is a quite nice car! Even covered A and B pillars, I notice. Not the case on cars like the A3 or A-class

Recently I have discovered a “cosmetic” issue I assume was caused during the dashboard installation process which unfortunately is directly in my eye line and continues to draw my attention. The surrounding of the temperature control panel is not installed correctly causing an uneven gap around it. In fact there is a gap on the bottom left of the facia reducing to no gap on the right side. Visually this not aesthetically pleasing and as stated earlier I believe it to be quality issue not identified during manufacturing steps and gaps quality checks. I have checked other vehicles in my local BMW dealership and it seems this issue is not a general problem but only related to my car. Not very good for my OCD....
