When I was a kid in the 60s the Jaguar was my dream guitar but we couldn't afford one. My friend had one and I was so jealous. A few years ago I bought a new red Squire VM Jaguar, replaced the bridge with the Mustang one, and for the money it's amazing and gorgeousl. At this time in my life I couldn't justify the cost of a Fender one. The Squire is pretty darm close, and I only paid $299. Thanks for showcasing the Jag.
In about 1976 I bought a "65 Jaguar for $20. Nobody wanted them. They were cheap. I wish I kept it. I didn't have any use for an electric by '79. I carried my acoustic around the country. You could play it anywhere at any time. Hitch hiking with an electric and amp wasn't happening.
A few years back circa 2016 I worked a job around Southern Pines where I found Casino guitars. Every day off for the two months I was there I'd pop round and pick a guitar off the wall and jam around on them. Baxter, ever so inviting, encouraged me to try whatever guitar I wanted. Even the $4000 Strats - "especially the $4000 Strat". Eventually I circled around a semi-hollow Gretsch and a Jaguar. The Jaguar won the day due to it's versatility and how bloody cool it looks. And Bax gave me a nice discount. I've been all over now but the Jag remains with me, as versatile as ever. I hope one day I'll get the time to swing back round Casino. Much love.
Excellent point about the unique attack on a Jag. It’s difficult to describe, but that constant loop of tactile feedback between the player, the Jag, and the amp is part of what makes it special. As you said when talking about the scale, it just inspires you to play differently. Leo’s greatest design, in my book. The JM was obviously a huge step forward, but to me the Jag was Leo taking that idea and perfecting it.
i think its something about the way it vibrates, the way the strings sit across the whole body and how they mount to the bridge and tailpiece make it a very "alive" instrument, like you said its a very tactile feedback, kind of like how if you set a strat bridge up to float you get harmonics off of the trem springs once you get above the 12th fret or so
@@therideneverends1697 Agree 100%. The bridge is such an essential component. I understand why people install a ToM or a Mastery but at the same time, something special is lost.
Sunny day in the park on the monkey bars with my dog Poco and Sony box, (circa '78) a Mayflower Movingman asked me to help with a couch. As we moved it, a guitar case was stored. "I gotta check this out", I thought, and a '67 Sunburst Jaguar was revealed. Brought my '67 Princeton over and left after the nice couple sold it to me for a about a Benjamin.....Got me through a few gigs, the action like butter with 10s. As a lead player, I still like the "rhythm" controls, tone up through a Marshall with natural dirt. Still have guitar and amp. Enjoyed the vid and thanks for letting me share 🎸
Oh man that neck pickup! And the bridge pickup! And the middle pickup!😂 For those who are Fender fan boys (like me) but haven’t had you’re hands on a Jaguar, it really is something. As the presenter said, in your hands the feel when you hear those pickups... wow! And a far better tremolo than a strat. Love the Jag!
Love Jags! The most underrated and maybe the most graceful body design of Leo’s because even though it is offset it is beautifully proportioned. And of course the sounds! With a good drippy spring reverb there is an a great scooped atmospheric shimmer that makes for a great lead tone to cut through a mix. Highly recommend.
. I have a Johnny Marr Jaguar and it does influence the way I play over a Strat. Different but different in a good way. Great video as always, Casino guys!
Nice video Baxter! I tried a early 60’s Jag and great vibe! Best one I’ve tried! No offsets in squad so no brainer BUT spending that much $$ I thought ‘ what if something I really want pops up and all $$ spent on Jag?’ Decided to hold off and see and that night found a 14 Rich Robinson Es in next state when you couldn’t even find on Reverb or for sale often. 5 yr search OVER! Ironically, that Jag still available 2 yrs later but a USA White Falcon now competing lol! It NEVER ends!!!! Cheers!! Love your content and discussions off topic!!!
Predominantly a bass player here, but a friend had a Squier CV 70's surf green jaguar in pretty much new condition that he wasn't playing so he sold it to me for cheap. I took a couple of lessons from a guy who played in a surf band and I was hooked. I'm not good enough to warrant investing in a Fender, but I'm happy to be learning on my Squier.
I've always been a Strat man! But I've always loved the Jag! I only played one once in my life and had the wonderful opportunity of owning my childhood guitar hero's signature Jag, Johnny Marr. It's not exactly the same as a Jag due to JM's redesign, but it's by far the best feeling and sounding guitar I've ever owned, especially with the custom wound Bareknuckle Johnny Marr pickups... It is absolutely stellar! Thank you for the killer vid.
Love Jags. Purchased one of the 60th anniversary in LPB. Yeah, it's a bit of a mishmosh and not pre-CBS spec nor identical to '68 B&B neck or pups, and heavy. But it sounds great to me, perhaps a bit too flashy for my taste but is still cool looking, and I play sitting down (as Leo intended w/offsets). Controls really aren't that complicated; the strangle switch is fun as is the mute, with the Rhythm circuit providing a nice lush tone that Joe Pass could make work for jazz. Also have a MIJ thinline and American Pro that's kind of cheaper version of the Johnny Marr circuits.
Nice video enjoyed the content. Definitely want a Jag when I can find the right one for me. Love the look of the one you are playing (not a shell pink guy but that same guitar in another color would be brilliant). The price of those custom shop Jags is defiantly a tough pill to take

Although I miss Jonathan in these, these are super well-done videos production wise and the way Baxter speaks about guitars I could listen to for almost as long as I could his playing, which I love. I seem to remember Baxter saying something about playing in one of those CBGBs type bands back in the day (Richard Hell maybe?) so I can totally see him on stage with one of these. The Marr sig Jaguar is my bucket list guitar for sure, Jaguars just look cooler than any other guitar out there.
Personally I'd avoid the Marr sig, it's overpriced unless you've played one for a good few hours and know it works for the full range of music you want to play and I say that as a lifelong Marr fan. But the problem is its a Jag that removes a lot of features over the much cheaper non-sig Jags simply because Marr doesn't use them. I'll state again that I do love his playing but he is a very mono-sound guitarist, hear 2 notes and you'll know it's Marr every time. If you want a guitar collection with tons of specific guitars for specific pieces go ahead but if you're an average amateur/semi-pro personally I'd get a normal Jag and a small pedalboard an enjoy one of the best "one-size-fits-all" guitar models ever made in my opinion
To me the jag is THE guitar sound. Not a strat, tele, lp or anything. It's guitar at it's purest form, not a particular tone, but a pure, raw sound, a white canvas. That's why it's special to me.
I still have my 64 Jag which I play through my 69 Fender Dual Showman with Reverb, it does transport one to a different time, yeah a musical time machine.
Discovered the Jaguar shape and size works best for me and also recently picked up a burst thinline Jag as well. Upgraded w/Descendant trem, Staytrem bridge & Curtis Novak pickups and sounds wonderful!
Johnny Marr never played a Jaguar during the Smith. It came much later, with modest mouse. It´s a funny myth, when everybody grabs a JM Signature they play some smith-tunes, which where often done by a Gibson Les Paul, ES 335 or a Rickenbacker.
Loved these and Jazzmasters since i was a kid of 6 in '63. Sq JagMaster here. I'm set btw, no Surf or trem ever. It became my RF Blue Line axe. No relation,,,,just worked.
Not sure why I've never really considered a Jag or Jazzmaster. It may come down to struggles with my first electric guitar, a Baldwin Jazz Split Sound. I was very young, it weighed a thousand pounds, but mostly the circuit/settings didn't make much sense to me. Might have to give them another look.
If you are someone with ten guitars, it's probably frustrating, because it took me time to bit by bit learn how to set it up. Needs a shim, the bridge set higher off the body, heavy strings, set the trem before you intonate, turns out to be super stable and just invitingly playable.... Also, if you spend 5 mins with it the switches aren't confusing at all, cmon, it's not a super computer... Thanks for the vid! Great playing 👍

I ordered the Fender American 60th anniversary Jaguar in mystic lake placed blue (with matching headstock). It came in mid-August and it is a physically heavy guitar with the poorly designed saddle issues. But it is a nice one!
the saddle is not poorly designed if you set it up correctly, jags are supposed to be shimmed in setup with 10 gauge springs on upwards, the break angle puts more tension on the bridge
Although my only experience on offsets is with a Squire CV jaguar and jazz master(same model and color) I just love the Jaguar. Waiting for a used AVRI, AO, or Johnny Marr to pop up for a good deal!
I'm replacing the vibrato and bridge with a Mastery kit; it's black anodised, so less chrome... but my thinline Jaguar is also limited to 500 in the western market. I did not expect for its price to shoot up past $3000 (I bought it for a $1000 in 2013).
I bought a '63 Jaguar in 1990 after I graduated high school(I used some of my college scholarship money)for I think $1400.I sold it in 2016 for over $10,000.I wish I never sold it now that it's gone.
Have a few jags, including a HH classic player and my fav Johnny Marr signature. If you don't play metal or heavy 'classic' rock, its perfect in every way
I've owned 2 during my days and flipped both because I just didn't bond with them. But I had a bad habit of flipping guitars back then. Like the Jazzmaster I flipped and instantly regretted. Maybe one day I'll get another or another Jazzie.
Nah... he played lots of stuff in bssm and other records with the jaguar but he used a strat for utb but the jaguar does look really cool in the video.
I was fascinated by Jaguars after seeing John Frusciante in the Under The Bridge video, as well as seeing Kurt Cobain using one. The first on I played was a shell pink version at a local shop. When I got my first job at 15 I saved up all my money to buy a sunburst AV '62 Reissue Jaguar. I've made a couple mods but it has never done me wrong it is very dear to me nearly 20 years later.
@@christopherfidler3019 My philosophy is that I won’t buy an expensive P/J without it being on a different body, I already have an American Jazz and P. Love CIJ though, have a mustang from Japan. They made the Japanese Jaguar in blue as well I believe, and silver maybe.
Yes and E-type an XJ and an XK8 for shopping! I'm a Tele man myself so likely no Fender Jags for me. My heart already belongs to Flying Vs, LPs and the humble Tele.

The string spacing is too wide on a Mustang bridge - just use a nail file and cut a groove instead. A drop of clear fingernai polish on the height adjust screw. Both of these items are available in the beauty isle of Walgreens for about $2 My 2003 CIJ never comes out of tune, nor my MIJ 94 JM. Actually my 2017 Squier Bass VI stays in tune too without any of the bridge fiddling at all funny enough, I guess the bass strings hold it down well.

I’ve had a crafted in Japan jaguar for 20 years. the bridge has always been a pain to keep it set up properly, with all kinds of buzzing coming from different places. The frets have sharp edges. The pickups are less than average. It’s really my favorite guitar in my collection for one reason. It looks beautiful.
I have a 94/95 MIJ Jag and changed out the bridge that came with it (it was used) to a Staytrem bridge and it's great. Also added the Novak Jag V pickups which were a huge upgrade. It's my favorite guitar.
I do really want a Jag. I tried to find one a few months ago but I couldn't find any that were good. They were all awful with sharp and rough frets and poorly cut nuts.
What string gauge do you use and how hard do you play? I have a jazzmaster that I usually have tuned in D# or D standard. I dont think I've had my high e slip from the saddle at all during my 3 months of owning it. I have 12's on, and I did have flats on it for a little bit.
@@LysanderLH If you ever get one again, cause they're really cool, I suggest playing around with different string gauges, maybe playing a little lighter, and totally get the guitar to a professional to get it checked out, cause they might be able to fix some of that in the setup. Or theres always the option of getting a new bridge. Theres tons of ways to get around the issue. So if you ever get a chance to play one, you might wanna consider some of those things, because if you really like everything else about the guitars it might be worth it to change out the strings or bridge. The trem system alone is worth putting heavier gauge strings on, especially if you're using it a lot.
The Jaguar is to Fender what the Flying V or Explorer are to Gibson. You either love it or hate it. The Jaguar is the ONLY missing piece of the puzzle for me. I had one of the PJ Jaguar Basses(Players) but it just wasn't a JAGUAR. I ALMOST had a Johnny Marr in LPB. I really missed the boat on that one. Now I am just waiting on Fender to release one that is NOT a Signature model and not hyper expensive like the anniversary model. Maybe in whatever they call the new American Vintage line?!?!?
Fender Jaguars are great guitars, but describing them as “light” is a bit misleading. Typically they’re 8-9 pounds. The Jag/Jazzmaster body uses a lot of wood, much more than a Mustang, Strat or Tele, so those other models usually weigh less. And all the shielding, rhythm circuit, chrome plates, mute, etc. found on the vintage design starts to add up quickly.
Marr never played/recorded a Jag while in The Smiths, that came much later. Jags are NOT lightweight guitars, usually around 8.5 lbs minimum and so are almost always heavier than your average Strat/Tele.
My very first electric was an original 1965 Jaguar custom red ..I had ZERO idea what I had and subsequently traded it in on a brand new Strat ..what an idiot ..lol..I would give anything to have that thing back
I have mine about about five years now. I found it backstage after playing a gig. It was just sitting there, so I brought it home with me. Great sounding guitar.

Fender himself agreed. He felt the Jaguar was his finest instrument.
I feel like the pickups were a huge step backwards from the innovative Jazzmaster pickups. Oh look, it's Strat pickups again. Yay.
I work at Gibson Custom and even I love the very unique sound of this guitar, and of course Baxters playing. Great video.

the neck pickup running on the top circuit with a little bit of reverb or chorus is really a magical tone

btw, no Surf or trem ever. It became my RF Blue Line axe. No relation,,,,just worked.
Not sure why I've never really considered a Jag or Jazzmaster. It may come down to struggles with my first electric guitar, a Baldwin Jazz Split Sound. I was very young, it weighed a thousand pounds, but mostly the circuit/settings didn't make much sense to me. Might have to give them another look.
I have 2 Johnny Marr guitars. Might be my favorite guitar of all time.
If you are someone with ten guitars, it's probably frustrating, because it took me time to bit by bit learn how to set it up. Needs a shim, the bridge set higher off the body, heavy strings, set the trem before you intonate, turns out to be super stable and just invitingly playable.... Also, if you spend 5 mins with it the switches aren't confusing at all, cmon, it's not a super computer... Thanks for the vid! Great playing 👍

I ordered the Fender American 60th anniversary Jaguar in mystic lake placed blue (with matching headstock). It came in mid-August and it is a physically heavy guitar with the poorly designed saddle issues. But it is a nice one!
Also have a 60th MLPB. Check out the Staytrem bridge, which does work w/the Mute. I'm also a fan of the Descendent trem, but the stock is okay.
the saddle is not poorly designed if you set it up correctly, jags are supposed to be shimmed in setup with 10 gauge springs on upwards, the break angle puts more tension on the bridge
Although my only experience on offsets is with a Squire CV jaguar and jazz master(same model and color) I just love the Jaguar. Waiting for a used AVRI, AO, or Johnny Marr to pop up for a good deal!

I'm replacing the vibrato and bridge with a Mastery kit; it's black anodised, so less chrome... but my thinline Jaguar is also limited to 500 in the western market. I did not expect for its price to shoot up past $3000 (I bought it for a $1000 in 2013).
250 in black and 250 in burst I believe.

I bought a '63 Jaguar in 1990 after I graduated high school(I used some of my college scholarship money)for I think $1400.I sold it in 2016 for over $10,000.I wish I never sold it now that it's gone.
Have a few jags, including a HH classic player and my fav Johnny Marr signature. If you don't play metal or heavy 'classic' rock, its perfect in every way
I've owned 2 during my days and flipped both because I just didn't bond with them. But I had a bad habit of flipping guitars back then. Like the Jazzmaster I flipped and instantly regretted. Maybe one day I'll get another or another Jazzie.

John Frusciante played Under the Bridge on a Jaguar too! We all know and love that sound.
Nah... he played lots of stuff in bssm and other records with the jaguar but he used a strat for utb but the jaguar does look really cool in the video.
I was fascinated by Jaguars after seeing John Frusciante in the Under The Bridge video, as well as seeing Kurt Cobain using one. The first on I played was a shell pink version at a local shop.
When I got my first job at 15 I saved up all my money to buy a sunburst AV '62 Reissue Jaguar. I've made a couple mods but it has never done me wrong it is very dear to me nearly 20 years later.
You don’t have to tell me… Fender needs to bring back the American Standard Jaguar Bass w/ P/J configuration.
I much prefer the CIJ Jaguar with Jazz pickups (Google Image, it's the red one).
@@christopherfidler3019 My philosophy is that I won’t buy an expensive P/J without it being on a different body, I already have an American Jazz and P. Love CIJ though, have a mustang from Japan. They made the Japanese Jaguar in blue as well I believe, and silver maybe.

Yes and E-type an XJ and an XK8 for shopping! I'm a Tele man myself so likely no Fender Jags for me. My heart already belongs to Flying Vs, LPs and the humble Tele.

The string spacing is too wide on a Mustang bridge - just use a nail file and cut a groove instead. A drop of clear fingernai polish on the height adjust screw. Both of these items are available in the beauty isle of Walgreens for about $2 My 2003 CIJ never comes out of tune, nor my MIJ 94 JM. Actually my 2017 Squier Bass VI stays in tune too without any of the bridge fiddling at all funny enough, I guess the bass strings hold it down well.

My wife has a "Strangle Switch" too and I do my best not to accidentally hit it but sometimes I just will on purpose.
I’ve had a crafted in Japan jaguar for 20 years. the bridge has always been a pain to keep it set up properly, with all kinds of buzzing coming from different places. The frets have sharp edges. The pickups are less than average. It’s really my favorite guitar in my collection for one reason. It looks beautiful.

I have a 94/95 MIJ Jag and changed out the bridge that came with it (it was used) to a Staytrem bridge and it's great. Also added the Novak Jag V pickups which were a huge upgrade. It's my favorite guitar.
I have both Fender and Squier Jaguars (both current models). The irony is Squier do it properly.

I do really want a Jag. I tried to find one a few months ago but I couldn't find any that were good. They were all awful with sharp and rough frets and poorly cut nuts.

I’ve never had one which didn’t resolve the high E string from skipping off the saddle.
What string gauge do you use and how hard do you play? I have a jazzmaster that I usually have tuned in D# or D standard. I dont think I've had my high e slip from the saddle at all during my 3 months of owning it. I have 12's on, and I did have flats on it for a little bit.
@@paulg3686 I only had one for a few weeks and returned it because of the string issue. I love the sound of Jags and JMs except for that issue.
@@LysanderLH If you ever get one again, cause they're really cool, I suggest playing around with different string gauges, maybe playing a little lighter, and totally get the guitar to a professional to get it checked out, cause they might be able to fix some of that in the setup. Or theres always the option of getting a new bridge.
Theres tons of ways to get around the issue. So if you ever get a chance to play one, you might wanna consider some of those things, because if you really like everything else about the guitars it might be worth it to change out the strings or bridge. The trem system alone is worth putting heavier gauge strings on, especially if you're using it a lot.

The Jaguar is to Fender what the Flying V or Explorer are to Gibson. You either love it or hate it. The Jaguar is the ONLY missing piece of the puzzle for me. I had one of the PJ Jaguar Basses(Players) but it just wasn't a JAGUAR. I ALMOST had a Johnny Marr in LPB. I really missed the boat on that one.
Now I am just waiting on Fender to release one that is NOT a Signature model and not hyper expensive like the anniversary model. Maybe in whatever they call the new American Vintage line?!?!?
Fender is adding a Jaguar to the AV2 lineup next year. Won’t be cheap, but it will be top of the line.

Fender Jaguars are great guitars, but describing them as “light” is a bit misleading. Typically they’re 8-9 pounds. The Jag/Jazzmaster body uses a lot of wood, much more than a Mustang, Strat or Tele, so those other models usually weigh less. And all the shielding, rhythm circuit, chrome plates, mute, etc. found on the vintage design starts to add up quickly.
Marr never played/recorded a Jag while in The Smiths, that came much later. Jags are NOT lightweight guitars, usually around 8.5 lbs minimum and so are almost always heavier than your average Strat/Tele.
They're not small either. I have a 7 pound Mustang, it's the size and weight that puts me off getting the Jaguar.
My very first electric was an original 1965 Jaguar custom red ..I had ZERO idea what I had and subsequently traded it in on a brand new Strat ..what an idiot ..lol..I would give anything to have that thing back
I have mine about about five years now. I found it backstage after playing a gig. It was just sitting there, so I brought it home with me. Great sounding guitar.
