The history of the Albanian double-headed eagle

  • In ancient cultures around the world, the eagle has often been regarded as the representative of the gods. Throughout human history, the eagle symbols have played a significant role not only in spirituality but also as symbols of social and political positions.
    Unlike the symbol of the single-headed eagle, the double-headed eagle (which we will cover more generally in this video), has a more powerful meaning and is often referred to various empires.
    In regards to the highly debated questions behind the history of the Albanian state symbol, we aim to clarify a few misconceptions by mapping out when it first appeared in Albanian heraldry and who they inherit it from.
    ๐Ÿ“ŒNOTE! This video has multiple subtitles, but if your language is not included, please leave a comment of your preferred language and we will add it.

    Who knows why the Romans called the today's center-north of Albania ILLYRIA GRAECA or EPIRUS NOVA with the most famous Greek Colonies such as Apollonia, Epidamnus and Lissos which still can be seen. On the other hand the center-Southern part of today's Albania all the way down to today's Arta in Greece was called in the Roman era OLD EPIRUS or EPIRUS VETA land of the Greek tribes of Chaonians, Molossians, and Thesprotians. The Illyrian tribes living in EPIRUS NOVA were conquered by the Greeks (Macedonians) and fully hellenized by the 4th century BC and thus assimilated. As far as it concerns the Pelasgian Tribes were pre-hellenic and Crete, Thera (Santorini) etc are great examples of early Hellenic History. The "Catalogue of Women" (7th century BC) presents an aitiology for the various tribes of the Greeks (Hellenes), deriving them from Hellen and Pandora, the children of Deukalion and Pyrrha (ฮ ฯฯฯฮฑ which in Greek means "red haired" or "fire colored)). Pandora (named after her grandmother Pandora) together with Zeus had three sons: Graecus, Magnetas and Makednos, while Hellen had the three sons Dorus, Xuthus (with his sons Ion and Achaeus) and Aeolos, corresponding to the founders of the seven tribes of the (Boeotian) Graecians, the (Thessalian) Magnetes, the Macedonians, the Dorians, the Ionians, the Achaeans and the Aeolians, respectively. All the following are the most known Hellenic Tribes which inhabited the entire Greek Peninsula, the Islands and most parts of the modern Albania:
    LATE STONE AND EARLY BRONZE AGE
    Pelasgians
    Minoic Cretans
    LATE BRONZE AGE (Mycenaean Greece)
    *Achaeans/Ahhiyawa
    IRON AGE
    *Aeolians
    **Thessalians
    **Magnesians
    **Boeotians
    ***Thebans
    *Ionians (Attic-Ionic)
    **Athenians
    **Euboeans
    **Milesians
    *Dorians
    **Spartans
    **Locrians
    **Cretans
    **Rhodians
    **Aetolians
    *Arcado-Cypriots
    **Arcadians
    **Cypriots
    *Macedonians;
    *Epirotes;
    *Thracian Greeks or Aegean Thracians;
    *Geloni
    THE REST IS THE NEWLY FOUND ALBANIAN NATIONALISM AND PROPAGANDA EVEN IF IT IS FULLY EVIDENT THAT MOST OF TODAY'S ALBANIA HAS GREEK AND NO SO MUCH ILLYRIAN PAST. MANY ALBANIANS ARE EPIROTES WHICH WAS AN ANCIENT GREEK TRIBE. EVEN TODAY, THE SOUTHERN PART OF ALBANIA IS INHABITED BY A GREEK MINORITY WHICH HAS ANCIENT EPIROTE ORIGINS. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED ALBANIA AND GREECE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE STATE SINCE THEY HAVE ONE COMMON HISTORY (WHICH ISN'T ALBANIAN BUT EPIROTE).
    Skanderbegโ€™s (Kastriotis) helmet says clearly his titles and separates distingly the Greek tribes (Emathians and Epirotes) from the Albanian ones on its Inscription. The helmet is made of white metal, adorned with a strip dressed in gold. On its top lies the head of a horned goat made of bronze, also dressed in gold. The bottom part bears a copper strip adorned with a monogram separated by rosettes * IN * PE * RA * TO * RE * BT *, which means: Iesus Nazarenus * Principi Emathie * Regi Albaniae * Terrori Osmanorum * Regi Epirotarum * Benedictat Te (Jesus Nazarene Blesses Thee [Skanderbeg], Prince of Emathia (since he was named after Alexander the Great), King of Albania, Terror of the Ottomans, King of Epirus). So we observe that Epirotans and Emathians as Greeks are separately named from Albanians which means that they were 2 different peoples under Kastrioti's rule.

      The notion of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes has been a persistent narrative, often used to foster a sense of unity and historical continuity. However, a closer examination reveals the complexity and diversity within the Greek population, challenging the simplistic portrayal of ethnic homogeneity and direct lineage from the ancient Hellenes.
      To begin with, Greece has been a crossroads of various civilizations throughout history, including interactions with Albanians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and others. This rich history of cultural exchanges has inevitably left an imprint on the ethnic composition of the region. Genetic studies indicate a diversity of influences, reflecting the historical interactions and migrations that have shaped the genetic makeup of the Greek people. This diversity challenges the notion of a singular, homogeneous ethnic origin.
      Moreover, the concept of ethnicity itself is complex and dynamic. It is not solely determined by genetic factors but is also influenced by cultural, linguistic, and historical elements. While the Hellenes were indeed one of the ancient tribes in the region, claiming a direct ethnic lineage from them oversimplifies the intricate processes of cultural assimilation, intermixing, and acculturation that have occurred over centuries.
      Language, often considered a key marker of ethnic identity, also presents complexities. The modern Greeks language belongs to the Indo-European family but is distinct within this linguistic group. While it has roots in the Hellenic language, linguistic evolution and influences from Latin, Slavic, and other languages have contributed to its unique character. This linguistic complexity challenges the notion of a straightforward, unbroken linguistic continuity between ancient Hellenic and modern Greek.
      Historical records further complicate the narrative of ethnic homogeneity. The region has witnessed migrations, invasions, and changes in political control, all of which have contributed to the diversity within the Greek population. The medieval period, for example, saw the influx of various groups, including Slavs and Normans, leaving lasting cultural and genetic impacts.
      In conclusion, the idea of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes is a simplistic narrative that does not fully capture the complexity of Greece's history and the diversity within its population. Genetic, linguistic, and historical evidence points to a more nuanced and multifaceted reality, highlighting the need to approach the question of Greek identity with a recognition of the intricate processes of cultural evolution and interaction that have shaped the region over millennia.

    I bet all this amazing work wich includes many historical facts not easy to puzzle them all together if you dont have the knowledge , being a researcher ,and above all being passionate with doses of patriotism wouldnt be here to enjoy. I am very sure its done from alba niggaz wich live abroad like everything good that happened in our history . Our recent historians and archeologists have been too busy with politics and they have spend all their energy how to lie and destroy further our country instead of preserving it. What good we had from our history is either albanians living abroad or those that they left like most are doing even now . ofc austrians and other foreigners have done the work we couldnt .Hope this channel will shed a light about us and no matter how little still will help a lot of foreigners wich have touristic interest to understand better our country and they will be amazed to find out that we dont have just cheap seas and montains but also a very ancient culture. I hope the team involved can Keep up the good work and never give up. Thanks for the video and what you guys doing there

      The Pelasgians were proto Albanians and were considered barbaric by Greeks. Pelasgian family lists languages in four groups, of which only Albanian is well-attestedยป

      โ€œThe speakers of the Indo-European language that would become Albanian and the speakers of the Indo-European language (Hellenic Albanian) that would become Modern Greek were the first to enter the Illyrian Peninsula whose languages are of relevance for modern Albanian linguistics.โ€:
      ยซNonetheless, most historians have decided that the evidence linking Albanian to Messapic, which in turn has been linked to Illyrian, is sufficient to see Albanian as a descendant of a language to Illyrian, if not a descendant of Illyrian itselfยป
      It is argued that Albanian's affinities to the Messapic language proved that, at the very least, it was part of the same brandy as illyrian

    I just wanted to say I like the way you missed the Selcuk Empire which was a Turkish Empire with a Double Eagle headed flag. Also the moon and crescent that was a symbol of illyium proves that maybe we have deeper routes before the ottomans.

      @@akrepi88la11 Turks did not proceed West after the Successful 1071 Manzikert (Malazgirt) war. If you go further even to the Celts they have Turkish heritage and migrated from Anatolia. Like I said we have deep routes where Turks have travelled far and wide.

      Turkish moon and star is not the same one. Yours represent eid mubarak while the Illyrian one is about Sirius star.

      @albdrill The Muslims took the moon and the Star from the conquest of the byzantines (particularly constantinople if my memory serves correctly).
      Islam originally and for a long time had no symbols, but the ottomans adopted it from either the Greeks during their conquests.
      There are also theories that it comes from the Persians, because the sassanids used to mint coins with crescent moons which the islamic empire adopted and used but I think this theory is much weaker.
