    To anyone trying this: I achieved the best effect with three sanding steps in stead of two.
    I first sanded and painted two wheels and then did the other two the next day. The first two I sanded with 100 grid and then 400 grid. After painting and drying, they turned out rather matte and a kind of icy silver and feel rough. I decided to put way more effort in sanding the next two wheels. I used 100 grid, 240 grid and then 400 grid, and spend just more time sanding generally this time and really made sure everything was nice and smooth. These two wheels turned out beautifully shiny, a more metallic silver and they are smooth to the touch.
    Thank you Chrisfix for this great video! Learned a lot from it, and learned a lot from my own process too.
    Biggest lesson: you can not be sloppy on the prepwork - it is the most important part. Don't think you will simply cover and hide imperfections with the layers of paint. No, the paint will only accentuate any imperfections you leave!

    • @H_de_Weert
      @H_de_Weert 7 개월 전 +1

      Also, I used my multi tool on the hard to reach places. This was a big mistake! The steel wire brush carved deep into the original layers of paint. IF you use a multi tool, you will have to strip the full wheel of all it's paint completely, to bare metal. You can't leave a single spot of paint.
      I used the multi tool on spots that were hard to sand by hand, but it turned out nigh impossible to make those spots smoothly transition into the hand-sanded parts. You will see bumps and gouges.

      Add in the benefit of personal satisfaction - of knowing that the job was done right - 'cause you did it yourself (nothing beats the pride of workmanship you get when you do-it-yourself). Oh... no taxes either! I usually pay myself minimum wage of $50/hr.

    Just a word of warning, I work at a place put tires on rims, don't try to build up too much of that bondo on the lip of the rim. Especially if you intend on using lower profile tires, sometimes the bar we use to lift the bead off the rim can require some pressure and I wouldn't doubt that it could crack some off if you try to rebuild too much of the lip. Some shops may have different, more precise tools, but just thought I'd put it out there is all.

    I found your channel maybe a week ago and I just wanted to say thank you. I've learned so much it isn't even funny. I'm a woodworker and I wanted to pass something on to you that might help you save some money as well. I use a sandpaper called Abranet by Mirka. It costs a bit more than your average pack of sand paper, but its a mesh, so it rarely clogs and cleans very easy. It has saved me hundreds since I switched. I went from using half a pack per project to using only one abranet disk per three of four projects (They come 5 disks per pack, it comes in rolls and standard rectangles too). I've had to use them on steel and aluminum before and work great. Thanks again for your hard work, it is very much appreciated.

      Nonsense. If painted evenly the shim distance would be identical to the machined surface. Also, rattle can paint is extremely thin once the solvents flash off. The paint is typically only 0.005" in thickness which is roughly the thickness of human hair or a sheet of paper. Plus the torque generated by lug nuts threads will be in the thousands of pounds per square inch on the wheel face which will squish the fresh paint evenly. I own a Metrology and calibration laboratory where we calibrate torque wrench's, coating thickness gages, gage blocks to the millionths of an inch, etc. and measure automotive aerospace and medical parts daily on robotic Coordinate Measuring Machines. Ive been in hundreds of manufacturing facilities of all kinds and seen many processes. The thickness of rattle can paint does not surpass the dimensional runout tolerance of OEM and aftermarket wheels, let alone the machining tolerances of brake rotors and drums that they are mounted too. There is way more runout on those parts than you would ever get with a layer or 2 of rattle can spray paint.

    This was a extremely good video from a "learning how to" stand point. One of the best on the Web i have seen. Following these well thought out steps gives me the confidence that i could do a pretty solid job, so Thank you for the amazing video. The one thing i would say, is that i thought the wheels that were on the jag at beginning of video were a sharper design (taking absolutely nothing away from the amazing work you did on the OEM rims you grabbed and transformed)

      For a wheel, I would take some shortcuts.
      However, it's always best to see how a thorough procedure is done to fix something first in order to understand each step's purpose.

    • @hiiambarney4489

      @@cometcal2 Not sure if I would take shortcuts for wheels, because they are the most prone to wear. You def. want the coatings to be stable and clean.
