@Craig W it's sad because they couldn't diagnose what was wrong so they just threw new parts on it. If it aint broke dont fix it, but they didnt even know what was broke....I know lots of younger, or inexperienced vehicle owners would do the same thing.

Unfortunately I did all of this and replaced my fuel pump it ended up being a fuel pump grounding literally right next door to where I was working on the fuel pump, frustrating, also an Acura
@@Guill0rtiz there is a section on the youtube creator site that can show you all the newest comments from all your videos. chris has said in the past that he always takes the time to go through them and read his comments. seriously, he's one of the best youtubers, if not the best
taught me a good portion of the stuff i know about cars, my fathers a mechanic but i never learned much from him besides changing oil and oil filter, fuel filter when you feel your motor be a bit sluggish (about my first vehicle which was a diesel truck) and that sort of thing.
Chris, you probably wont see this but youve been with me my whole journey. From teaching and inspiring me to work on my car to going to tech school and becoming an industrial technician. Honestly man, you deserve every shred of money and respect that the world can offer you. Almost every comment here is someone that you helped.

This is why Chris is such a great KRplusr. Most other guys would have just made a video showing us how to fix the timing problem. Chris took the pains of showing us all of the possible problems so that we could learn more. Kudos to you Chris!

It amazes me that some mechanics will just throw expensive parts at a problem . No system tests , no thought whatsoever as to cost. I love the step by step process you use. I have lost count of all the motorized things I have fixed using the same exact method . Well done Chris.

Some parts def do cost an arm and leg. But most of the time it seems like some mechanics don’t know what they’re doing or do care enough to go through a process of analysis
This is the reason I say all mechanics are thieves and I refuse to take my car to a workshop ever again! They have us sussed! They take it for granted most ppl don't know about cars or engines so they pull the wool over our eyes. Why should the neighbour have paid for all that shit when the car still wouldn't start!?! It's a joke! I know many others are pissed off like me because they're watching these videos too.
Dude! My friends neighbor said he has 3 cars in his yard that dont work, and he doesnt want it, It was nice cars, a Cadillac ATS, a Volvo V40, and a Audi A8! He had a lot of money and was retired, he gave it to me saying it doesnt work but instead just tries to, After this video I fixed all of them! Its crazy! I sold the Cadillac and the Volvo with the origional owners concent and kept the Audi A8 as a personal preference.

@@chrisfix I have an 88 CRX SOHC and I've gotten to the step of aligning the cam pulley but it won't turn more than two turns to the left it right. Any ideas?

It's pretty freaking simple. Because a mechanic has to provide a warranty. And just by looking under that valve cover, this thing is NOT going to run for a long time, or even run great. It did not have the required oil changes for a long time.
That engine needs proper maintenance, what you've seen under the valve cover is a BIG SYMPTOM of a MUCH bigger issue. Imagine how the crankshaft bearings are if the cam and rockers are looking like that.
That engine needs a rebuild and thorough clean, at the very least. I expect the bearings won't be looking too good either. He got the engine to run, but he didn't completely fix all of its problems.

What surprised me was the fact that despite the context of the guy's car suddenly stopping at a stop light, the mechanic replaces parts which don't go out all at once like that
@@Brody1312 You'd be surprised how often they do this. Sometimes it's just pure ego/hard-headedness in thinking they know better.
This video is absolutely perfect for basics, but two things to note if you are trying to diagnose a no start vehicle;
On some newer cars, the immobilizer can cause a no start, and can be hard to check without a professional/dealer workshop
If the timing is out, some vehicles run interference engines, meaning valves can be bent, which would be diagnosed through the engine compression test, but important to know this.
New cars with immobilizers don't let you turn the engine over,this video is for cars that crank but don't start
@@sabagamer3052 Some ECU’s disable injectors/coil packs instead of disabling cranking.
If the vehicle doesn’t recognise the immobiliser some cars will crank for less than a second and then drop out
@@sabagamer3052 I have a civic a few years newer than this one, if I use the non ignition key in the ignition it'll just keep cranking. It only cuts fuel.

The thing I love about your videos is even if you don't need a certain fix, you still tell us how to fix it. It would be so easy for you to skip something because your car doesn't need it, but the fact you tell us the signs and things to try for symptoms your car isn't showing is awesome!

Seriously thank you for these no nonsense videos without being condescending at all, you have no idea how often people are condescending towards me about cars which is why i never learnt much. My brother and father would even take my truck and do things like the timing belt without asking which is great but never gave me an opportunity to learn. Ive wanted to do most the work on my vehicles since i got them a few years ago but Ive never learnt how because when i try its always "don't worry ill handle it". Your videos are amazing, thank you so much.

What could be the cause of the slack timing?
Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.

After having taken apart and rebuilt a 2.0L Ford Focus motor, I can say that the convenient access to the timing belt tensioner and crank rotation/balancer is the stuff dreams are made of. Wish chain-driven engines could somehow engineer that.

You're a fantastic teacher. I know next to nothing about automotive and I feel like I suddenly understand a lot more. Rebuild Rescue tried to explain a lot of this, but he spoke too fast and I didn't get it as much. You on the other hand are really hands-on with beginners and people who just want to know the basic troubleshooting steps. So thank you, if I ever get my license finally and my own car, I'll definitely use some of your teachings if it has problems.

Shotgun diagnosis is rampant in the industry. Lots of techs out there aren't that good at diagnosis, but they know how to change out parts. Thankfully you sound like one of the good guys

As a non mechanic there's nothing more satisfying as fixing a car yourself. It might take a bit of time and patience but it is truly rewarding for the wallet! This guy's videos shows exactly that.

Probably just buy a tin of Engine flush and put it in the engine and do an oil change and the engine flush will get all the gunk out with the oil
Spill a few litres with diesel on it while brushing with a nylon brush or something. Cleans it right up.

Why changing the distributor and the computer? I can understand for the coil maybe he found the spark weak.
If it wasn't the timing belt. It could probably be the timing of the spark. Cause of the pmh sensor or the target. I had the target a couple of time. Some strange things on it.

And this is exactly why I started working on my own cars. Shops cannot diagnose a problem anymore, all they want to do is replace a bunch of parts that may be related to the issue. ChrisFix has saved me a ridiculous amount of money plus the satisfaction of fixing your own stuff is amazing.

For real. The LITERALLY first time I went to a mechanic because I hat misfires, he told me it was most likely the distributor and or sparkplugs. He told me it was difficult to do and all in all would cost me about 300 bucks. We made out an appointment and the very same day I made my research to find out that the parts if I bought them myself would cost me 70 tops. Not to mention how easy it actually was to replace. Sufficed to say I didn't show up to that appointment
@@barneystinson6331 Good for you! Not everyone has the gumption to research something like that, let alone take on the task of performing the work themselves. I learned to work on cars not out of interest, but out of necessity; I had no money to pay a mechanic. With time, it did end up being something I enjoyed, and similar to Chris' reaction here, when you fix something and you get to see/hear it run...it is euphoric.

I like how you thoroughly explained everything but didn’t over do it. Some videos like this take forever to get through because they over explain and show every painstaking detail. This was edited very well to show what needed to be done but skipped past boring unnecessary steps.

You kept organically appearing in my feed without me subbing. I then started watching some of your more technical videos like this one and found that not only are you entertaining, you are very knowledgeable and provide straight forward ways of breaking down a complex job. I am just getting into working on cars myself and I felt like I could easily follow along with what you were saying and doing.
Thanks. I like your isolating problems method. Especially, after the "pro" shop replaced a bunch of expensive stuff. Your simple step-by-step trouble shooting (of 5 things) should be documented as a guideline for training new automobile mechanics (and/or retraining some experience mechanics 😉)

The same thing happened to my dad 20+ years ago with a 92 Subaru wagon. He spent at least 4k on repairs and couldn't get it to run. He sold it to a friend of his for 300 dollars because he was sure he was selling a dead car. Next week he saw his friend driving the car and found out a $7 part at the local auto store is all it took.

Agreed, I was thinking that the mechanic that had worked on it wasn't very good as soon as the video started. There are a lot of mechanics that are just parts changers, they don't actually diagnose the issue, they just replace parts hoping they replace the right one. I will say that timing can be an easy one to gloss over, because most engines aren't non-interference and the engine grenades if the timing slips. Luckily for this Honda that engine seems to be a non-interference engine and was able to be saved!
I had a misfire code. My mechanic did not check or diagnose spark plug or coil. He replaced parts only. :(
Oblivion , Unfortunately, he probably did, but decided to jack up the bill first by doing a bunch of unnecessary work. Sad reality of a lot of people in the industry unfortunately.
