  • Prius hybrid battery replacement. Learn how to replace a hybrid battery in a 04-09 Toyota Prius and make money while you're at it! Replacing a hybrid battery is not difficult at all.
    I show you how to scan the computer to check the hybrid battery and we got a P0A80 code which means replace hybrid EV battery. I also show you how to clean the hybrid battery fan to keep the battery cool. To remove a Toyota Prius hybrid battery you remove a few interior trim pieces, unbolt the hybrid battery, swap out battery cells, and reinstall. While I did fix a Prius, you can apply the same process to many other hybrids like Honda, Chevy, Nissan, Ford, and Lexus. So whether you are Prius to fix and flip for a quick profit wheeler dealer style, or you want to fix your hybrid so you can continue to use it, here is the in-depth video on how to replace a hybrid battery safely and easily.

    Not only does this video brilliantly illustrate how to replace the battery but it also shows Toyota's brilliant design. Every last piece of this car is designed to be easily serviced even though there are a number of parts to take off to get to the battery. Someone with just a few tools and moderate mechanical skill can do this job in an afternoon and save a lot of money.

    At 21:40 - just a note that it's necessary to bolt the battery to the car before attaching the electrical connections. One bolt is longer and black, and goes in the upper left corner. I think this is the ground bolt. If you connect everything and start the car, you'll get strange errors without the battery bolted in. Don't ask me how I know. :)

    By far, the best thing to do to keep track of where bolts go is once you remove a piece you partially screw bolts back into their holes by hand. It will save so much frustration of remembering where they go and the possibility of forgetting. The only downside is the little bit of extra time of taking them out again when u want to replace things but it's worth it

    Just wanted to share my experience. I took my car to my mechanic and he told me it was about a 97% chance that I had a dying hybrid battery. He said he doesn't deal with hybrid systems which is respectable. He told me my best bet was to go the dealer because at least I will know it gets done right. That's decent advice if you have cash to spend but me being a broke caveman decided I would rip my sisters 07 prius battery out and shove it into my 06. (lucky for me she just bought a new car 4 days prior to this so she sold me the battery for super super cheap)
    Using only this video and 200 dollars worth of harbor freight tools I was able to successfully perform the delicate operation in a mere 9 hours. So far, so good! I can't express how insanely great this video is! In my case I didn't have to open the battery core which made the job a lot easier, but after dismantling the first prius and reassembling it, the experience and guiding from this video made me knowledgeable to dismantle the second one after with only a few references for remembering which way that fan goes... was it up? down? left? Again, I'm a caveman so I retreated to my den and waited for my stone tablet to load up this video so I could reference it.
    I also have to mention that you should never buy a 30 piece ratchet set for $5 at harbor freight. after finally testing the swapped battery in my 06 and confirming it worked, I oogaboogad in glee. I quickly began screwing the battery covers back on and that's when disaster struck. My 20 cent ratchet adapter snapped in half, leaving me with a 3/8 drill and only a 1/4 socket. Anyways that sucked.
    Also pro tip, don't drop the negative battery lead screw from the 12v into the battery crevice. It sucks because you can't retrieve it without a magnet, taking out the battery or shoving your scrawny arms in the 1 inch fissure and hoping you can find it in all the water that's probably in there.
    Anyways, great tutorial, perfect 5/7, if anyone read this far then you are a legend. peace.

I hate people who show you how to take it apart and then say putting it back together is just the reverse of taking it apart that's the end of the video bye, those people suck and are lazy. This guy is on point does the entire thing all the way through tells you all the torque specs and stuff and even goes out of his way to replace other things that are wrong with it which shows that he has integrity and honesty. Best car mechanic DIY video I have seen so far from anyone!

    Excellent, I haven't seen such a professionally edited video in a long time; Easy to understand, wonderful, fantastic, straight to the point, and good job.
    Small notes: It is recommended to write on the cover of the batteries after replacing them the replacement date so that the car buyer or the service person knows when the batteries were replaced.
    Also, all long working tools recommend to insulate them with a simple black Azoliriband, which can avoid the trouble of an unexpected short.
    I would love to have the same demo for the 2019 Toyota RAV-4 SUV; I bought the vehicle second hand and I am afraid of the future of the batteries.

  • @phatcowboy76
    @phatcowboy76 5 년 전 +25

    I'm an electrician. Trained by the US Navy and over 30 years in that field so, legit. A word on electrical safety. Once you had the battery together and started the car there was upwards of 200 volts on the two high voltage connections on the battery. In your next step, you held solid metal tools and the cable strain relief clamp plate right over the high voltage connections. If you had dropped them or touch those connections you would have been shocked or sparks would fly. It could ruin your new battery as well or start a fire. Please be careful during this step. You need to put a piece of plastic or something nonconductive over the high voltage connections while the covers are not in place. Safety first. More people get electrocuted off of 120 volts than any other voltage and I guarantee those high voltage connections have a higher voltage than that. Food for thought. I love your videos Chris and I am a subscriber so keep up the good work. I support your channel and all the charity work you do Chris.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  5 년 전 +11

      Thanks for the feedback. Those wires are coming off of solenoids and they are not active when the car is off and or the battery safety plug is removed which is why I remove the safety plug right away before touching the battery. Not only does it half the voltage but it opens up the circuit on the battery since it is in series. There are no wires or bare metal that can be contacted that is "live" or "hot" as it is all covered or sealed. That is part of the safety design done by Toyota. Now that doesnt mean you cannot be more cautious and I appreciate your advice!

I replaced my engine last year and bolt and part organization is the most important thing you can do to save your self time. I also recommend creating a log of what you are doing. That way when you put it back together you can just read your log and reverse. This will ensure you will not skip a step then have to double back and correct something you skipped.

    Yes absolutely Chris. Thank you for the video. I'm more involved in cleaning detailing my car happily. I've watched lots of videos by several authors. Many are just too involved with some very expensive products. The first video I watched of yours just listening to your enthusiastic presentation I mean it was got my attention hell it did and I came back to you today cuz I'm ready to go now and Skip many others that I can go to. And then the second part is you keep it simple and you explain it in detail and why you're doing it keep it up man I've got several more videos of years to watch. Another interior video and a exterior video. I've done this I know how to do this all of it but it's just makes it more fresh when you are going to do it in the near future you don't have to stop and question yourself or whatever so thanks Chris man love the videos good job

    An extra step I'd take is to protect all those terminals from corroding again. The vinegar on those nuts will encourage quick corrosion. I'd rinse them or better yet put them in a water and baking soda solution. Then dry them and rub dielectric grease on them or spray them with a battery terminal protector. This way you are avoiding a potential fault, Every time I disconnect everything electrical, I spray a little terminal protector in the connections.
