How to Get Your Car to Make Sharper Turns (Steering Angle Mod)

  • Learn how to get more steering angle so your car can make sharper turns by removing rack limiters in the steering rack. That way you can make a U turn instead of a K turn. This works for cars that have steering rack limiters (spacers) and can be quick and easy to do.

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 4 년 전 +42

      The ear clamp can be worked with a flat blade screw driver to open it far enough to get the boot off. Besides, un-like most, after 30 years of dealer work, I have a bag of 50 or more in the bottom drawer of my tool box. You can buy these at the dealer alone, but plan ahead as they will have to ordered. Also, thinking outside the box, once you know the I.D., go to the irrigation section of the home improvement store and they sell these for water pipe used in lawns. Also, if you have a hydraulic line / cylinder shop in town, they carry these for low pressure return hose up to 8" I.D.

    • @deankay4434

      Look, as an ASE Master Tech since 1978, if you are unable to remove the "Pinch" type clamp with "Ears" using a small flat blade screw driver, insert into crimp, twist back & forth carefully, then cut with side cutters. But if this make you sick, or scared / tearing the boot....do this!
      Rock Auto, Ford, 2002, 4.6L, steering, Rack & Pinion Bellows, select the boot / bellows that comes with ear clamps starting at $4.27 + S&H. Fixed. I have pliers well used for these clamps. Quit crying and Do It! Man-Up and get R done. Dam.

      Thanks a lot man! I really work hard on getting all of the best camera angles and when I am not happy with something, I dont just put it in the video, I go out and film it again. For the quad-copter shot, I went out today (well yesterday haha) to redo that so I can match the cars better for example! I think of each video as something that showcases my work and I want every one of them to be as good as it can reasonably be in a week or two. After each video is published, I immediately start on the next video!

    Good vid for folks who don't know about cars.
    ----sometimes, on my own vehicles, I replace the clamps, e.g., when doing a cooling system flush, with regular hose clamps. Not only do they hold better, you can adjust the tension on them, but they are also, to me, easier to work with. ESP., when you put the boot back on, it obviously is not tight anymore.
    -----Those "Wheel adapters" are wheel spacers. By using them, you are changing the pressure points on the suspension and bearings, wheel offset, adding more pressure to the studs, changing the wheel alignment, and tire wear could become uneven, to name a few.
    -----It increases scrub radius. This increases pressure on the steering rack. All these changes can make the steering wheel feel jerky over bumps, etc., affecting steering control and the tires no longer have the car's weight in the middle, or as close as possible to the middle, thus in wet or other conditions such as maneuverability can lead to wheel slippage and an accident.
    -----Eventually, based on my 28 years of experience, the wheel bearings or something wear prematurely and even break, even a steering rack, which ends up costing the customer boat loads of money to fix. They are considered "Safe," if installed properly, but they also can change the reactions of the suspension components, which could potentially lead to an accident.

      Hey Chrisfix+ actually in my car when I was cleaning up my wheels (steel) it became rusted I don't know how to remove it so please make a video on it but I'll say the reason why it rusted because they are made of rusting metal 🙁

    Would it be a good idea to stick wheel spacers on the back wheels too? That way the front wheels aren’t our more than the rear wheels and it doesn’t bother my OCD.

      Hi, you're talking about the CV halfaxles, correct? Is it just the bend in rubber boots that needs to be considered or does the halfaxle as a whole have a maximum angle that needs to be obeyed?

    A lot of manufacturers will use the same power steering rack in multiple cars to save money. Then depending on each car, they will put in different sized spacers. It's not a danger at speed because it doesn't change the rate at which the wheels turn, simply changes where the lock point is. The only time you will ever get to the lock point is during a U-Turn and parking. If you get to full-lock at speed, even without the limiter removed, the problem lies between steering wheel and seat.

    hey chrisfix i got a question about washer fluid during the winter.
    If you want to be 100% sure that its not going to freeze on the window
    when using it before your car fan has gotten up to temperature, and this
    has happened to me many times when driving on the highway and using the
    washer fluids and it starts to crystalize on my windshield. is there a mix
    of fluids i can use to completly avoid it freezing all together ?

    • @CT_Taylor
      @CT_Taylor 6 년 전 +3

      A 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora with a 3.5l V6. Its pretty cramped down there when I had to service my power steering lines. To replace the pressure hose you have to remove head shielding, fender liners, sway bar end links, a tie rod, and use a whole lot of swearing. And I lucked out, if I had the 4.0l V8 I would be screwed with less room haha.

    fine and dandy for a rear wheel drive, but with front wheel drive, AWD, and 4 wheel drive your CV joints or universal joints will tear right out on the first turn you make

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  6 년 전 +62

      They shouldnt tear out. If you dont have a lot of angle to begin with the CV joints can take more angle especially since you only go full lock when you are going slow. For example that Fiesta is FWD and already has a lot of angle. But no matter what you definitely need to check for clearance and for binding like you said because every car is different.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 6 년 전 +20

      I was just thinking about this. What with differing designs and all, it may or may not be a problem, so it would be a very good idea to check how much angle your CV joints can safely handle first. And remember Chris, while you showed the Fiesta turning tighter, you didn't show it's actual turning angles...and the shorter wheelbase could account for that tighter radius without any more angle.

    • @ShaunMMX
      @ShaunMMX 6 년 전 +5

      That is right, smaller cars tend to have a tighter turning circle, mustangs generally have wider turning circles because they're a much longer and wider car.

    • @wargames43
      @wargames43 6 년 전 +4

      Also most fast cars have a lower turning angle to prevent oversteer when cruising at lets say 100km/h so you dont suddenly pull it out at 180 degrees like a mercidise :P
