I have been using this video series to help my son find a good cash car. It has been super valuable, great time spent with my son instructing him on the process and helping him feel comfortable taking his time and not jumping at the first thing that he looks at. My takeaways in order:
    1. The process of determining the value of a car PRIOR to seeing the car might the best part of this series.
    2. Finding all the things that are wrong, and determining if they are more trouble than they are worth. If not, factor the repairs into the negotiation. Seems obvious, but I didn't do that in the past.
    3. Knowing what you are willing to spend, and walking away if you cannot agree on that price.
I had one observation of the ChrisFix checklist. I didn't see a place to write the mileage. Maybe I missed it. But having that recorded prior to seeing the car was helpful in one case where the car's mileage was meaningfully different from the listing (around 12,000 mi different). I don't know that I would have noticed otherwise.
We haven't found the right deal yet, but thanks to this series, we feel like "pros," which gives us confidence.

    • @chrisfix

I'm glad you've taken all that away from this series! And I would write the milage down in the margin next to the car info section

@Green Giant you have a twisted way of viewing standard business practices. You ALWAYS should try to get the cheaper price on goods and services if at all possible. Used cars come with risks of internal parts going kaputz. As long as the seller was satisfied with the deal - that's all the hell that matters. The only Class B guy here dude is you. If you talk me down on a price and I agree to it - I'm not being ripped off or bled. If I'm not happy with an offer, I don't have to accept. Same thing with Frank dealing with Chris. Frank agreed - so why are you pissed off? Keep in mind., Frank was not mentally deficient.

Grow up. You should stop acting like a backward 12 year old.

Here is an update for everyone:
-Frank was compensated for letting me film. I fixed his other car and saved him over $600. I did this because he was great with letting me film the video.
-I thought I made it clear but for those who are confused, this car is worth $2500 with no problems, it needs $1200+ in work to make it safe to drive, so a $1900 offer is more than fair (and he had many people check the car and not even get an offer because of the bad shape the car was in). A dealer would have given him $800 for a trade in if they even took it at all.
-For those of you saying, "I would have just given him the extra $100" you are missing the point. If you give the person even more money than the car is worth, you are getting taken advantage of. No one is forcing the owner to sell the car to me, he agreed to the deal. If he didnt want to sell it, he didnt have to sell it.
-Hopefully that clears somethings up for those who are confused! Hopefully the series was helpful!

I guess that makes sense and that might have influenced his selling price in the end slightly. I think one of the best things about these luxury cars that if they are still in decent shape is knowing that someone previously probably paid around 30-40K for the same car you are now enjoying at just a fraction of that amount.

Emotions play a huge role in the sales process. Some people will avoid a test drive all together to avoid this, but I don't recommend it, as you should ALWAYS test drive a vehicle before purchasing. And technically you want to buy a car you CAN be emotionally attached to, just don't let that play a role in your negotiating.

  • @kvernon1

Chris, great job on this. I'm actually test driving several potential cars right now, and I would personally add these additions to the test drive:
    (1) Practice backing the car up! Get a sense for how well you can visualize your surroundings (especially if it doesn't have a rear camera). Also, since I drive a standard, I want to make sure the reverse gear is distinct from the others. I drove a nice car where reverse & 1st gear were too close for comfort, and rejected it on that basis.
    (2) If possible, ascend a steep hill. Does the car struggle? How does the transmission respond under the stress?
    (3) Deliberately go over a rough patch or hit a small bump (informing the owner in advance this is a test). Or if you pass by an unpaved road or dirt parking lot, ask if you can take a brief detour there. Get a sense of how it absorbs the bumps, and feels on a less-than-ideal road.
    (4) You may have done this without specifically mentioning it, but I politely ask the owner for some intentional moments of non-conversation, specifically to listen to the car. Get a sense for wind/road noise, rattles/squeaks, or anything about the engine that doesn't sound pleasing. Then pick up the conversation again.
Some of the owners actually complemented me for being so thorough. It communicated that I was taking the test drive (and therefore the car) seriously, and I think that was a good unspoken message to convey.
Hope your readers find this helpful.

My advice would be to settle on a fair price in your budget, then, if they try to add any fees to make you pay more, tell them "I'll pay those fees if you take the amount of them off the price of the car". Not 100% sure if it'd work, but it lets them know you're adamant about sticking to your guns and if they don't agree, stand up, shake their hand and say "Adios" 😂 (just kidding, but be sure to let them know you're not afraid of walking away. That's not a lowball. He outlined what it would take to fix the car, which would be over $1200. Not to mention, he didn't even talk about what it'll take to fix the back sensor as well as the front bumper. If the car was in tip top shape it would be $2500, but it wasn't that at all. So, if we assume $2500 is the standard trade in, taking off $1200 for all the things he'll need to fix would be $1300. $1500>$1300, so Chris actually gave a pretty good offer. Definitely on the lower side, but not a lowball at all

Since you are willing to spend 3k+ on a car, the 100$ shouldn't make much of a difference. To put it in other words, for a poor man 100$ is his weekly salary. For a rich man, 100$ is what his child gets weekly to spend. The context matters. If I offered you 5$ you will, most likely, be like "meh". If I offered the same 5$ to a homeless man he would be extremely grateful.

I think he meant it if you know the car is fine and won't need money to fix to be drive able, don't lowball. But since he estimated that the car needs a about $1200 in repairs, and the car is worth $2500 in good condition(no repairs needed) . Than $1500 isn't completely unreasonable. It's an art, man. I personally don't like to lowball, I don't want to disrespect someone. But we have to be logical when buying a used car and know what these cars go for and what needs to be repaired ASAP. Use that as leverage to lower the price. I paid too much for a Lexus SC 400 because I really wanted it, now I'm having to replace rear wheel bearings, hubs and rotors.

Fun to see that you are making a video with the Jaguar X Type which was the first car I did buy. I also had the 2,5 litre with automatic transmission.
It did unfortunately get scrapped after only 2 years because of a lot of rust damage. The car jack fell trough the car because the metal was eaten up by the rust which left the car with a huge crack that went all the way from the front wheels to the back wheels.
I lost 8000 usd on that car because I did get the transmission flushed at the Jaguar dealership, changed spark plugs, battery and got new winter tires and summer tires.
The only thing I have left is the winter tires which does not fit my new car and I can't even get rid off them for a reasonable amount.
Got an Jaguar XF 3,0D Portfolio twin turbo with Arden tuning as my 2nd car now and I am praying that it will last me a lot longer this time. Atleast it's been maintained properly by the previous owners and had a major service only 1 year before I got it where the car got 2 new turbos and quite a bit more work was done.
I am really considering getting a cheaper electric car the next time because these cars are draining my wallet really quickly even though I love Jaguar as a brand 😟
I am only earning slighly more than minimum wage so I think many people can actually afford if they don't spend money on smoking, alcohol, partying and things like that. It all depends on what is prioritized and which hobbies people have.

I always do the brake test. If you ask the owner and he / she agrees, what's the problem? In my experience most of the cars I tested have failed the tests ;) It's not dangerous when you're within the speed limit. Brakes fail if the car stops slower than expected or ABS doesn't kick in. Most cars however failed the hard acceleration test. After like 5 test drives I decided to keep my old car, because unlike the cars I tested - it passes all the tests. Yes, I do these tests every time I leave the garage after another repair ;)
