Love how he bought a brand new fuel pump assembly just to show us what it looked like for 2 seconds of the video. If thats not dedication, I dont know what is. Keep making quality content!
Im sure they let him borrow it for the video. They(Autozone) will loan most anything. Just bring it back and that is to a person without a reputation. Chris Fix is the BEST
Samantha And The Volume I agree ☝️ most parts store around this guy know what he does and will eat the cost because it promotes the store, not discrediting your comment by any means, just input from a ex-mechanic who makes more money selling parts than I did installing them due to the crappy shop pay 👌
Samantha And The Volume - Autozone rules. So does Napa. In my town there’s an O’Reilley, a Knechts, an Autozone, and a Napa within blocks of each other all on the same blvd. Plus a Fred Meyer, and a Target & Wal Mart - not to mention a half dozen tire & alignment shops. It’s car-part heaven :)

Hey Chris, my fuel pump went bad on my 2002 Ford Fusion. At minimum it would have cost me £250 to get a new one fitted at a garage however with your video, I was able to service the pump myself barely spending more than £30. Absolute legend mate, thanks for the guidance

You’re a great teacher, Chris. Even though my 97 Malibu is slightly different, you gave me some good pointers, like marking the mileage on the filter, and the pre-tests.
Long story short, I couldn’t change my filter because the disconnect was bent inside, so I cut the fuel line thinking I could repair it - I was wrong.
Dropping the tank like you did was way easier than trying to heat & fix the line, only for it to leak tragically.
The good news is that a fuel filter change quote was $60, but a new pump assembly with all new fuel lines cost $100 - so all in all it was only a $40 mistake, plus the old pump works fine and while it’s out I’ll have the time to learn how to make a new fuel line & have a spare fuel pump ready to go if I need it.
The experience of changing the pump is worth even more, and in many ways.
Thanks, Chris!
Awesome! I'm glad the whole process went well!
ChrisFix - Thanks Chris, My car’s back on the road. I considered cutting a hatch while the tank was down but decided against it. If anything goes wrong, I’d prefer any leaking fuel and fumes to remain outside of the car.
This was a brutal job, and I did it in the cold, but I did it right & it’s done.
Suggestion for Christmas this year: a professional pneumatic factory hose clamp plier tool. Best tool I ever owned. Removed the vapor canister and made the whole job easier. Replaced a burst coolant hose last summer in minutes flat. Great tool.

Advice: While you have the gas tank dropped, take a second and check your filler neck gasket/grommet. On most Mustangs in the 1994-2004 range, you have to drop the gas tank to change that gasket. Save yourself the time and check/replace it while you're doing the pump. That way you don't have to drop the gas tank a second time like I had to. The grommet is located at the base of the filler neck. It's a rubber donut on the side of the gas tank.
Driving around with a failed filler neck grommet will prevent you from getting any more than half a tank of gas; the rest will spill out. You will literally dump fuel out of your tank when you take a hard left turn. If you choose to replace it, make sure get the right one. The grommets are separated by year ranges: 1981-1997, 1998, and 1999-2004. You read that right. The grommet for 1998 Mustangs is exclusive to only 1998 Mustangs. It will not fit a 1999 nor a 1997.
Thanks for the video, Chris. Got a cheap 1998 Mustang from a friend. It wouldn't start and had sat for 3 years. A few hours and a new fuel pump later, it started right up.
I wish I had read this when I was doing work on my car. Although it is a 1977 LTD, it does have one of those filler neck grommets. I had to get a new gas tank for the car, but it didn't come with one of those grommets and I thought it would be fine. As soon as I filled it up to the top, it starting leaking. I probably lost $30 of gas just because of that. Now i'm gonna have to drop the tank again pretty soon.. :(
WHY IS YOUR COMMENT SO LONG!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
@@maxwellclark2744Because it contains a lot of words....and information. WHY ARE YOU YELLING?!?!?!?!?
Wow I wish I hand read this years ago. I had a 96 Gt and gas spilled out with hard left turns and it took MONTHS TO DIAGNOSE…. I later on figured it out hahaha. Good tip bro!
Hey dude just wanted to thank you! With your videos I changed out my fuel tank, fuel filter and replaced my rusted out fuel neck nozzle on my 01 Mustang GT!! All for about $110. You do great work and have been watching for over 2 years!

I never knew about the inertia switch, I learn something every time I watch his videos.
Same!! This guy helps me out every time!!
It's only on Ford Vehicles.
jay MO oh really, do other manufacturers have different ways of cutting fuel in a accident?
Way back when I was a little kid some guy rear-ended us because he was too busy looking at road works instead of the actual road when we had to stop because of a parked work vehicle. The only visual damage I remember was a broken rear bumper (again, that was like 18 years ago) and the car wouldn't start afterwards (Ford Mondeo/Contour).
Fun fact: The guy that rear-ended us was an insurance broker working for the same insurance company that we had our car insured at ^^
You've just missed the opportunity to look super pro in his eyes >.
Hey ChrisFix I've recently started watching your videos and I absolutely love how simple you make it sound. I have a 2001 Ford Thunderbird sitting in my garage it just stopped running one day and it's been sitting for a few years. You have inspired me to take a crack at it I'm going to continue researching your videos before I hand it over to a mechanic to waste over a grand for a new engine.

I wonder if there are awards for videos that are really competent, well put together, helpful and complete. Because you certainly deserve recognition for your how-to work Chris. Nicely done.
Thanks a lot! I do my best to make it so that if you have never seen a fuel pump but you think it might be your problem, you can replace the fuel pump and fix your car!
Chris we have learnt so many things from you. We really appreciate your efforts. This is one of the few videos where you replace the actual fuel pump as most videos just show changing the entire assembly. For the price sensitive DIYer or small garage this is a very critical thing to know that you can change just the fuel pump motor and save some money if it is only the pump that has failed.
As someone who is looking for a mustang around this model year range to have a project car, thank you for the work you put into these videos. You make it seem so simple and break it down in a way that anyone can understand. Keep up the good work!

ChrisFix hey chris, i have recently replaced my fuel pump to a new oem unit for my miata07. Somehow sometimes, my cranking delayed for a few secs before the engine starts. Have also replaced my spark plugs, oem air filter and tested my battery/starter all good. Prior to changing the fuel pump, this issue happened too. What could be the problem? 🤔

One of the most concise videos I've seen yet. You cut straight to the point. Well done.
Your videos are gold. So on point with great details. So my Mustang died on me, and no pressure in gas pedal at all. Started but died right off. Quick google search gave me options of fuel pump or MAFS failure. Your video confirmed that it wasn't a fuel pump because mine hummed. So next I was to check the MAFS. You can't believe what I found in my MAFS tube, big WD40 bottle 😱😱😱. Rest assured, after removing the bottle, the car started right away. I got my waterpump changed 2 weeks ago in a shop A. I don't see how they would have left that under the engine filter cover, since the waterpump change would not require removing that cover, but who knows. And prior that the car was in a shop B where it was maintained (filters, spark plugs etc) 7-8 months ago. At the time they did leave a tool under my hood and I had to go back, since the called looking for a tool and that for sure I was never returning to that shop B. So thinking that it's more likely that they left that bottle there too. What would be the chances that I get left items under my cars hood 2 times out of 2 visits in different car shops. But could that bottle really be sitting there so long without causing any problems!? Crazy...
I would consider it an honor if Chris were to get his hands on one of my vehicles, because I know it would be in good hands.
+Viper Jay 5 thanks man :)

I had to do this project on an old Saturn a few months back. Great video. One more diagnostic thing you can do, if your pump isn't running but you're getting power, is get under the car and smack the bottom of the tank with a hammer. Sometimes this gets the pump to run for a bit.
My Saturn didn't have a hole in the floor for the fuel pump, and everyone was telling me to cut a hole in the floor to change it - I say that's a bad idea. The tank is so absurdly easy to remove, cutting a hole in the floor would be MORE work in many cases. Lastly, in the case of my car, there was a rubber hose about 10" long that attached the tank to the filler tube, and it was easier to remove that rubber tube than it would have been to remove the entire filler tube. Whatever the case, as Chris says, don't be intimidated, look at how your car goes together, and get it done.

As a beginner, I have learned a lot so far and have become confident. Thanks a lot Chris. I can't wait for you to start teaching about tires (beading, etc.).
One recommendation when checking fuel pressure its nice to just lay the gauge on the windshield. My 93 vette had a similar problem with the fuel lines and it always helped to be able to watch while also listening.
your videos are class. thank you :) im a female and you have demystified all of these inner workings of cars for me. straightforward videos, you never skip parts or go off topic. i have adhd also and i can totally watch all your videos without skipping any parts or being distracted. i dont think i'll be working on my car, but it's good for me to know when i take it to the mechanic. :) thank you again :)
I love that you use hand tools so that people at home don't feel intimidated by the process and think that they need a bunch of fancy (and expensive) power tools. Great video! Luckily I can get to my tank and pump just behind my rear seats. It's essentially the same pump as the drift stang, but has a different connector. I've changed it a few times, trying to find the best one for my car. A little bit more GPR/LPH ended up giving me more power over the stock pump, since it's a return style system and doesn't waste fuel.

***** the wait goes on....
Over all this was a great video and you showed a couple of troubleshooting tips I didn't know about. There were also a couple of problems with this video. 1st, Never lift a fuel tank with just a floor jack. I learned this lesson the hard way. Just like a transmission, the fuel tank can be damaged when using a regular floor jack. Either use a piece of plywood or a transmission jack. I dropped my tank on an old GMC Sierra to replace my fuel pump using a floor jack. After that I was replacing the pump every 3-6 months. I also started having weird fuel supply issues. ~$1,200 later I found out why. Many fuel tanks have baffles spot welded inside the tank. Lifting the tank with a floor jack bowed the tank sufficiently to break one or more welds. After that, the motion of the gasoline broke whatever remained of the welds and then the baffle was constantly hammering away at the fuel pump. There is no way to safely and legally weld a fuel tank. It has to be replaced. I was fortunate to get a good used one for about $100. 2nd, always check the tank seal. If the seal is not good then you will not reach and/or maintain proper fuel pressure. This becomes a serious issue if you live in a state with strict emission control laws.
i love watching your videos over and over again..
Nice video as always. I did this several times for my old car. One aditional check that I also did was to test for a second the old and new pump directly on the car battery using wires. This way you know for sure if the old pump is bad or it is something in the assembly (like pump plug might go bad) and that the new pump is also working before installing it. You can also use multimeter to test the pump itself.
Great idea!
congrats on the one million subscribers

i would be too if I picked up a cheap mustang for what seemed like an easy fix.
fuel pumps in the tanks are daunting though
So far the best video in youtube to teach how to replace a fuel pump
1999-2004 Mustangs have the fuel relay inside the CCRM. So check the fuse for the CCRM also! It is located in the engine bay fuse box labelled: F.14 (CCRM) 20AMP. The CCRM lives behind the passenger side fender. It's a small box with the fuel relay inside of it. You might be able to put your ear to the fender and listen for a click. A click doesn't mean it works ok, a click just means it receiving and handing the 12 volts OK. A true test would be a resistance test on the other two pins on the relay
Hope it helps others! Great video! I watched it back in 2016, now im watching it again as my pump went out 4 years later haha!
I can't wait for the video where you clean the engine, I've been looking for a good, safe way to clean it and I heard a lot of ways. Brake cleaner, steam, power washer, hose, soap and wooder, etc lol I want to know what your way is :P Also great video man! Glad to see you got it running (:
Your vids are awesome dude! Keep it up!!!
I know nothing about auto repair. But I love your videos.
Planned on having my car tow this weekend. Son found this video and my car was fixed at no cost :-) Turns out I accidentally got that red button (inertia switch) inside the trunk of my Grand Marquis! Thank you!!
