Do Head Gasket Sealers Actually Work (FULL 2yr TEST with Engine Teardown)

  • Replacing a Head Gasket can be difficult and expensive. Sometimes your car is not worth fixing and this is where a head gasket sealer in a bottle comes in handy. Do these head gasket sealers actually work? How long do they last? How do they work? What does a bad head gasket look like? Do head gasket sealers clog radiators?
In this video I show you how to use a head gasket sealer to repair the head gasket and test it for 2yrs and 10,000 miles. I then tear down the engine and show you how the headgasket failed, how the sealer worked, and if the radiator got clogged up with sealer.

I used Blue Devil when my 97 Acura TL 3.2L started overheating continuously. I dye tested it to confirm and it was my head gasket. I followed Blue Devil step by step. I also bought a brand new radiator and flushed the system with a water hose with the top radiator hose pushing it through it and with no thermostat with bottom hose disconnected. With that I started the vehicle as well to fully flush all the coolant out. Applied the BD and it worked. This was at 100k miles and I am at 190k miles after 10 years! No issues.

Was wondering if it would be a good idea to drain your coolant system after the leak has stopped.
Agree that it looks impressive and it didn’t clog things up by why temp fate?
At that point you’ve probably kicked up some nasties in that system.
Guess that was a long winded way of saying I’d drain it and just replace with properly mixed coolant.

I have a 2013 Dodge Avenger R/T had the exact same problems as this car. No smoke billowing, no white milky substance in the engine cap, but the coolant reservoir reeked of Combustion gas. After $1,450 at the repair shop with no repair just money lost I was about to give up until I stumbled across this video.
Followed the instructions to the Letter. Took a day or two and had to top off the reservoir a few times but afterwards no overheating, running smoother and stronger.

I put Bar's stop leak in my 2001, Lincoln Town Car almost 3 years ago and its still holding. My heater works great, uses maybe 8 oz of anti freeze a year. The heater core was leaking. That's why I used Bar's Stop Leak. Works great for me. To change a heater core on this car, the entire dash needs to come out about a 2 day job for a professional, 3 days for a DIY. For what I spent on the Bar's Leak, it's worth it even if I have to flush , and add new anti freeze and Bar's leak. 😊

Been using the sealers for years. Grew up originally using just basic sodium silicate which was easy to buy. Not all gaskets are created equal. Also the liquid glass method wasn't always wise. I've had more success with Steal Seal and K-seal never used the ultimate formula. Had the most failures with BlueDevils formula. Tested most on the markets as the budget of customers its what they brought for me to use. I just did what the manufacturer stated for instructions. My friends 2004 Impala leaked in 2007 did a new gasket. In 2010 it blew again only 68000 miles and 2x blown so I did the Steel Seal this time and now there 201k on the vehicle and hasn't leaked or blown another spot. Thats the longest lasting quick fix I've been able to track. As the owner gave me the vehicle and I gave it to my brother and he sold it to a friend in need. The Bars Block seal imo should be only temporary as I've had to do many radiator and heater core flushes as it clogged either the radiator or the heater core. Especially in aluminum rads. Seen 4 Land Rovers clogged bottom of the rads. Just replace the gasket in those beasts.

Another thing you can do is re move the spark plugs one at a time and try to see which cylinder is leaking exhaust gases into the cooling system.
The one that is leaking will have white deposits on the tip of the spark plug at the gap.
After you put the sealer into the cooling system and let it run as directed shut off the engine and take out that spark plug so the pressure in the cooling system can force the sealer into the crack or gap between the gasket and head or block.
Let the sealant fill the leak and cure overnight. The next day replace the spark plug and go for a test drive.
It's probably best to remove the thermostat before you add the sealer and replace it after the curing time is up.
    Thanks for the video.

Hi Chris...I wanted to say thank you very much for your wonderful video! Being alone with no help, a senior lady on a fixed income and with old cars to match you saved the day because my 98 Cirrus was just diagnosed with a busted head gasket...the way you do your videos are so easy to understand. You take the time not only to show proof...you explain how stuff works, that even me...an old lady has hope! That I can do this!!!!
A big hug in tears and thank you so very much for sharing your gift of teaching..

Its more of a quick fix until you can get it repaired properly. Ive seen alot of issues with sealers. And i mean. Alot. Its up to you though to roll the dice.

First comment I've ever made on a youtube video is now: This was an excellent and comprehensive review, thanks for putting in the effort. I've always thought those products were snake oil... but if your in a bind it is totally worth a $20 swing for the fences. After 10K miles if it started to leak again? I"d throw the other half of that bottle in and cross my fingers. Well done man!

I've been using that exact Bar's Leaks sealer on a 2010 Prius (that year is known for blowing head gaskets). First sealed it in late Feb 2020, and the problem did come back roughly 10k miles later. I've put about 25k miles on it so far and still going (bought it at 193k, 218k now) about to add some more sealer again. It needs more when it starts to shake briefly on a cold start, and at the same time I notice the coolant level very slowly going down. I didn't use as much the 2nd time because I figured after the first time, it was still mostly sealed. I think I used 1/3rd of a bottle the last time. Oil has been clean the whole time. Leak was pretty minor from the get-go, would take days of normal driving to notice the reservoir having less coolant in it.
16:30 The bottle shows more steps than that...first step after pouring the sealer is to get it up to temp (In a Prius that means go for a short drive), and then stop and cool off completely, but THEN you're supposed to also go for a second 15 minute drive after it cooled from the first step, not the next day. That's when I take it on the freeway for 20 minutes or so. THEN the next day and for the next 10k, it runs great. Maybe that's what caused the thermostat on the Jaguar to stick closed for a bit? I really have no idea, I'm no mechanic and these problems have variables.
