Just changed my transmission fluid and filter by following this video. At first, after buying all the things I needed I just sat there for an hour thinking of how much I was regretting this, and that I could have just paid someone to do it. Then I was under the car dreading the mess of transmission fluid but it wasn’t that bad. Pan wasn’t cooperating so I thought that all this for nothing, but eventually it gave out. Gasket was fused onto the pan, factory filter, cleaning was the part I hated the most but at the end there was a clean pan, new filter, all I had to do was cross the finish line and.... I did! Dammit, Chris, you didn’t have to make look so easy but thank you so much 🙏

I want to do this on my Ranger as well. It's been changed several times by a shop over the years, but they want $180 to do it these days. I'm guessing this will save at least $120.

I just want them to come off without causing problems. I once had a Chrysler with those horrible two piece lug nuts. That was a 1995 car. I wonder if they still use those things. I replaced all of mine with some cheap chrome plated solid ones for a dollar each that also looked better. I just made sure they had a set of 20 that all match before buying them. They even installed them too for that price. I would do it again if I had a car that uses lug nuts. I now have one that uses bolts and it does make putting a tire on a little more challenging. I wonder how many people who had the two piece lug nuts were frustrated with them. The problem with them is the the cap is thin metal and it sometimes deforms or comes off. It can make removing those lug nuts a huge pain. It is worse some times with alloy wheels. If you want to see a really grouchy person, it would be me after having problems removing those monstrosities from a car.
Fabulous video! I followed your 5 step process and had total success! My truck is 2005 Ford Ranger and I didn't need a universal socket adapter because there was clearance for all 18 bolts. My filter did not have the "spout" on one side, but the new part was identical to the old one. The truck seemed to shift EASIER compared to before! The fluid removed was about 3.5 quarts and the color was similar to your middle variety...translucent brown with slight pink and no metal specks. The metal pan had a little metal on the magnet, but not much. Thank you Chris!...for saving me some $$$!

Great video. The only thing that I would have mentioned is to make sure, when you pull off the filter, that the o-rings come out with it.

Call of Drewski i had that happen when i was replacing injectors for my car. I was having a hard time getting the last one in and then i found out the O-ring never went out with the old injector
I had a problem taking the o- ring out of my 2007 Pontiac. Grand Prix, I tore it a little bit but I decided to leave it in there and not put a new o-ring in and just put in the filter. My o-ring was SUPER HARD to come out.

I was just given a 1990 Chevrolet G30 Van 1 Ton Beauville Extended. This video was exactly what I needed. In so used to not needing to deal with trans maintenance on newer cars. I had to get a refresher to remind myself what needs to be done. As always, this video is very much appreciated.
I replaced the transmission fluid on my 2006 Hyundai Tiburon at 110k miles (121k now). At that point I only owned the car for around 6k miles, and was very unimpressed with the sport shifter, taking 2-3 seconds to shift between gears, so I decided to replace the fluid.
Holy hell what a difference! the fresh fluid dropped my shifting times from 2-3 seconds all the way down to .25-.5 seconds! best thing I ever did for that car!

great tutorials chris! and thanks.. whoever does this to their vehicle is smart because you know youre doing the job right as no mechanic is going to follow all these steps! just make sure you have loads and i mean LOADS of dirty rags and obviously clean rags because you WILL need them and trust have two plastic blue tarps underneath to catch all the drips as they spill everywhere. but you get immense satisfaction in knowing you did the job right and you will certainly feel the transmission come alive and drive like a dream. Thanks so much Chris!

Great and easy to follow instructions in this video, thanks to Chris I saved over $50, had to buy all the tools to do the job, next time I do this job again, I'll be saving about $200. Thanks for the video! My pan was leaking and dealer wanted 400 to fix it. Took me 3 hours and I stripped a torx bolt that holds the filter, but you saved me 250 dollars and I am proud to say I did it myself!
Great video Chris. One suggestion is to install a drain plug to make future draining a breeze. Then you can drain it regularly, measure the amount drained, and refill. It would only take a few minutes and be nearly mess-free.
When the man is clearly teaching us about the transmission, DOs&DONTS, and all the great information he providing us with.... let’s be respectful and not make suggestions like he is uninformed or like he isn’t aware of quicker ways to handle shit. :D

Can i ask u a question; i have a 2018 toyota rav4 that has 30k miles. So if i change the transmission fluid (drain and fill) should i also change the transmission filter as well?
Im asking bc the car is fairly new and it has low mileage. And im thinking that in that case i would not have to change the transmission filter. Please advise. Greatly appreciate it.

This is an excellent description of how to do it. I am older and will not use ramps. I go to my competent mechanic, have him put the car on the lift and now I give the reason that I don't do the change. While the car is on the lift, I do what the insurance company doesn't want the customer to do. I have a list of inspection items, lubrication items (oh yes, you lubricate seals under the car or eventually have a big repair problem vs. a few bucks for lubricant). The tires are turned and inspected. I am inspecting every component. Your dealer mechanic and even your trusty local guy will not the same inspection that you want to do. It would be a PITA to do this with just ramps in the driveway. And remember. When you do city driving, short hops, start and stops, you are working the transmission much harder than driving on the open road. If your manual says change the fluid every 40,000 miles and you are highway driving the average mileage, that is every 2-3 years. You have about the same time interval with hard, in city, lower mileage driving.

I just did this to my ‘01 Olds Silhouette yesterday. Satisfying upon completion, but my filter was not that easy to do. No bolt to hold in or remove he filter. It just seats in using a metal ring. The old filter actually broke off removing it. I thought I broke my transmission lol. But I got some advice from an Oldsmobile master tech who said that it was fine as long as I could get the rest of the filter out, which I did. A job well for. Took 3.5 hours though. On the plus side, that knowledge will be great for later next time I change the filter, and if I ever encounter another vehicles come with the same type of filter installation.
Hey could you do a video on how to change cvt fluid. They're tons of automatic transmission fluid change videos but nobody really ever talks about cvt transmissions say like my 2009 nissan altima has. I read that the process is similar but it has additional places to drain it from so I was just wondering if you could grace folks like me with a video for the cvt. Thanks.

Hey Chris, Awesome video as always, just one suggestion? You reach a lot of people and people listen to you. If you could advise on your video that everyone out there to safely dispose of used oil and liquids that would be awesome. I think it's something like 10,000 litres of fresh water that is contaminated from just the 4 litre oil of one change being thrown in the trash or 'buried in the back yard' or dumped in a lake.. I'm in nz and unfortunately you can't usually take used oil back to the shop where you bought it but it's pretty cheap or free to take to the local dump. Cheers Chris, legend.
CHRIS! I am told my 2004 Honda Civic Lx has the filter built within the transmission itself. In this case, do I just drain and fill? I love the videos man! Thank you.

@@chrisfix The automatics in that generation Civic have an internal filter as in the transmission must be removed and taken apart to get to it.
Jonathan, if you read this, install a transmission oil cooler, specially if you live in a hot climate or drive uphill quite a bit. Those BMXA transmissions are really shoddy, they overheat and fail easily. (source: I own a 2004 Civic DX - I have looked into it)
You could also put in an inline filter, like a Magnefine, and change it every time you change the AT oil. I'm guessing it's the next best thing concerning filter media replacement.
