      I think it was pretty clear wenwu gave in and let the dweller kill him. Remember that he says his family, especially his wife, were what finally made growing old worthwhile. Therefore, after realizing that he's messed the whole thing up, to put it bluntly: He didn't want to keep living. He passed on the rings out of shame for his mistakes.
      Shang chi killing the dragon "quickly" is because the rings are controlled through martial arts taught to him by his family. There's actually really clever choreography references in that right.
      Ex) The final breaking motion he makes with his arms that causes the rings to explode, is the exact same move his father uses on him during their fight.

      @@waddledeeart6019 so to hell with his two living kids then? This sounds good but marvel films are not as deep as your explanation.
      The key difference between this end fight and any other marvel generic formula is the hero picks of the new same-y power and wins versus beating the villain with the same-y power who magically knows how to use the power seemingly better than the hero

    • @waddledeeart6019
      @waddledeeart6019 2 년 전 +81

      @@YoMrRice Nope, you're missing a key thing there. This is a movie meant to speak to a chinese/chinese american audience. To be fair though, I had to explain this to my boyfriend as well so I can understand why this philosophy is hard to grasp (it's not really healthy at times.)
      So Chinese culture values this idea that children are two perfect halves of their parents. The parents give everything up for their children. This same-y power you're talking about is thematically fitting here.
      Shang-chi in the final fight uses techniques from both his father's style of martial arts and his mother's. It's only by embracing both sides of his parents is he able to start unlocking his true potential. Again, it's far from the healthiest mindset, but it's something very true to Chinese culture.
      So is the whole thing about leaving his kids. Chinese kids are taught to respect their elders and never question them. Parents are supposed to know it all, and never admit their mistakes. Wenwu realizes his wrongs, but dies before he is able to make amends. It's a subtle nod to parents, a warning to admit faults and repair bonds before it's too late.

      You're thinking of Wuxia, which is a very modern fascination.
      Traditional chinese mythology like Shintoism had nothing like that; your teapot was more likely to turn into a spirit than you were. Then the warring states period saw the rise of "divine emperors" who were incarnations of gods destined to ascend and it was their divine right to send thousands off to die in war. Gods could be humans, but ascension was only for those born divine.
      The rise of philosophy and buddhism in the post-warring-states China introduced the concept of "Xian", where the pursuit of knowledge and excellence could achieve that same divinity. And since only Chinese elites could afford to enroll in schools, it was again a way to justify Divine Elitism, without needing to be an Emperor.
      Then China got REKT by Japan and the West during the World War era, and was left embarrassed and shamed. With the rise of Hong Kong Kung Fu culture and the asian appreciation following Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, China put a lot more emphasis on martial arts. Thus, a fusion of Xian and Kung Fu was inevitable as the internet and webnovels became the thing, and we got modern Wuxia.

Air brakes use a set pressure in the brake line to counteract the spring brakes and keep them open; cutting the line would reduce the air pressure and the spring brakes would then default to on, not off, meaning the bus would have stopped very suddenly and very completely. As cool as the bus fight scene is (especially the long take), buses have safety systems to prevent this sort of situation. : P

      It's a fight with Xialing in it, the lady who runs the place. Her introduction into the ring made it pretty evident that she fights often, or at the very least, has one hell of a win streak. She's probably bested opponents like abomination or stronger for that kind of applause. That might seem hard to believe, but given that Wong was allowed to bring that ring that opens portals, Xialing probably takes up weapons too in her other matches.

    I kinda got annoyed by how fast they killed off the dad in the end.
    He just realized he was wrong and decided to be there for his children.
    Only to sacrifice himself immediately for the son and gift his rings to the son, continuing the years of ignoring his daughter.
    Well, maybe it was intentional considering the very end, but I still feel like he could have actually helped both of 'em and still have it otherwise end the same way.

    • @PeteSesto
      @PeteSesto 2 년 전 +20

      My opinion: I think you're assuming growth where there is none. Earlier in the movie, Wenwu tells Shang that "if he wants to inherit the rings... something something". Legacy was a big thing to Wenwu. When we was snatched by the demon dragon thing, I don't think he realized he was wrong. I think he stayed on brand, realized he was done, and passed the rings on to his legacy. Ignoring his daughter through this is part of that brand.
      Wenwu's lack of growth and acceptance was his downfall.

    • @TheBadDesperado
      @TheBadDesperado 2 년 전 +11

      @@PeteSesto Good points, and my comment does make the growth seem to be more than I perceived it to be.
      Though he did care for Ying enough to (sorta?) disband the ten rings and put the rings away to grow old with his family, he grew cold after Ying died, blaming himself, his son & Ying for talking him into putting away the weapons & the organization.
      And when he was breaking away the soulsucker, he wasn't really doing it for personal power or fame, he believed to be freeing his wife who was captured by her own people as "punishment", being in denial over her being completely dead.
      When I watched, it seemed that he's teary eyed over Shang asking him to be there for his family & coming to terms that Ying is gone. He saves his son, leaving himself open by doing so & has flashbacks to the time he spent with Shang as he gives Shang the rings and then dies.
      You could argue about how close he felt to Xialing, or if he only cared for Shang & Ying, or if the reason he kept Xialing from training due to fear of her sharing the fate of her mother., especially with how much Xialing remined him of her Overall I felt that he cared for his family, he just loved his wife the most.
      Ps. I'm not sure what exactly he valued. When he was talking at the dinner, his reasoning for conquering and leading the world from shadows seemed to boil down to "Was bored and didn't think I could do much else." before finding a family and he didn't seem to be preparing either of his kids to bear the rings when Ying was still alive.

      i think he's just exhausted from all the energy he put into saving his wife. You can see his eyes tear up after the battle with Shang right before the Dweller in Darkness appears. In reality, some people commit suicide when they realized they've been scammed after putting in all the energy and money despite warnings from friends/family.

    • @waddledeeart6019
      @waddledeeart6019 2 년 전 +5

      I understand the frustration, but as someone who is Chinese, I think it's intentional as commentary on common parenting methods in our culture.
      For Chinese kids, we're always taught to highly respect our parents and never question them, even when they have hurt us. This clashes especially for Chinese Americans/Younger generations since we tend to have a better understanding of what's "good parenting".
      In short, Chinese parents are often ridiculously stubborn and will never admit fault. Wenwu realized he messed up, but by then, it was too late to apologize/he didn't even know how. It's painfully accurate.
