  • Apple has made some bold moves into health care, a market reportedly worth trillions. But the company’s strategy is a bit elusive as it walks the fine line between wellness and medicine.
Most recently, the company announced a new blood oxygen sensor on the Apple Watch Series 6 and a partnership with the Singaporean government to incentivize Apple Watch users to be more healthy. But the company’s strategy is a bit elusive as it walks the fine line between wellness and medicine.

EHR consultant here. The big piece that Silicon Valley always gets caught up in when trying to innovate in the health tech space are the incredibly stringent regulations on research and deployment. The classic Silicon Valley motto of “move fast and break things” just doesn’t work in healthcare. You’ve got to adhere to federal and state regulations, and that doesn’t even get into all the insurance requirements. The medical environment is, in many ways rightfully so, designed to foster methodical innovation, which is inherently at odds with the ethos of Silicon Valley.

As big as Epic electronic medical records is, their user interface isn't great, and it's clumsily built on top of legacy software. Apple should move into medical records first. Once they have a foothold, it'll be that much easier to port in data from their medical devices.

First of all, Tesla only succeeded because of Obama's policy, nobody outsmarted anybody. Secondly, Steve Jobs contribution in creation of iPhone was similar to Larry Page's in creation of Android. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to conceptualize sophisticated tech like Smartphones? It takes a team of extremely brilliant engineers, not some college drop out with ton of money. iPhone was not a sure success either when it was launched it was a huge gamble on Apple's part which was desparately trying to find new markets as it's Mac business was not profitable enough. Also, if you look at Market Share of Blackberry year by year, it was clearly Android's Arrival that it got out competed. These are simple facts that any informed individual would know before commenting.

The more important question is ''Is really being the first the most valuable?'' or '' Is the person/group that invents things bring the most value to the world or the one/group that makes it available/accessible/easy to use for most people''. Even us humans are not the first bipedal to ever walk this earth...we're the last. We're not the first to ever fly but we do it better. Even the best songs and artists but not known or listened by 1 to few people only... are incomparable to songs and artists that make their great songs available to the world and listened by millions to billions of people. First doesn't necessarily mean value. The touch screen phone may not be invented by Apple, but they invented the ''good touch screen SMARTphone useful for most people''. Once you combine things in a new way, like Hydrogen gas and Oxygen gas becomes so different with H20 or water which is very useful in so many more mind boggling ways, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts...
Also the 2nd mouse gets the cheese. The early bird might get the worm but are you sure that you are the ''early bird'' or......you are the ''early worm'' that has got eaten by the early bird? Even iPhone is late to the phone and smartphone market dominated by Nokia, HTC etc. Most companies that invented stuff or are the first are now dead like Kodak, Blockbuster etc. Even Netflix didn't invent the kind of business they're in but they invented the first one that works well and very valuable for most people and now with Netflix originals.

Which leads to a more premium feeling device. First-gen, capacitive touch screen sensors were not reliable, drag fade, did not work with sweaty or wet hands, and false inputs. I had issues with those types of devices. I preferred resistive tech because it worked in all conditions, but the industry was moving to capacitive as the default.

The traditional way tech companies make huge amounts of money is to create business models that evade regulation (because they never existed before) and undermine some existing industry that is too regulated, pays it's employees too much, pays too much taxes....and by the time anyone can figure out regulations are needed they already have a giant monopoly.
When someone says Apple and Healthcare in the same sentence there is huge opposition. Healthcare industry doesn't want tech "disruption" and investors don't want to invest in a regulated industry.
Consider a less cynical world where companies are not allowed to evade taxes and regulations creating monopolies, and where products have to actually help humanity, and it makes absolute perfect sense that Apple, the maker of the best computing and sensing devices you will find on humans worldwide, would be instrumental in health and well being.

Speaking as an ED nurse and former medic, a single lead ECG is next to useless...people turn up in the ED over their watch...seriously...just like the cardiologist said here...🤷‍♂️ maybe someday they will figure out a better way to extract more accurate data from that, but for now, these watch features and health functions are barely more than games on the watch...not to mention, a layman doesn't know how to interpret the information in a medical context...

Just the tip of the iceberg. Right now, we only see our doctors rarely, and usually only if there is a problem, or maybe an annual required insurance physical. Then, the doc just gets a snapshot of our health at that moment. Imagine the doc having access to a database of continuous real time data available from the patient, to spot potential problems before they arise. Of course, software would be needed to screen the data and flag problems, privacy and medical device issues would have to be dealt with, etc. But it would be a massive improvement over our current methods, and undoubtedly save lives.

I don't see the big deal of integrating a pulse oximeter in a watch. Now, blood pressure, that will be a big deal because that actually predicts non-communicable diseases. I have a pulse oximeter, and it costs $30 or less. A pulse oximeter is not worth paying $400 for. Even blood pressure devices cost around $30, but it would be worth using in a watch because of the compact form factor. Currently the cuffs and the devices are sort of bulky. Apple should release a watch strap blood pressure cuff because wrist cuffs actually already exist.

Is Apple more interested in the health of the ordinary citizen, or in creating a market to sell more I-watches and other products that it is not having much penetration so as to increase its profits?
Not to mention the surveillance information of the health of users to sell to third parties, target advertisements or sell and deny insurance. Oh, and not to mention the premium price Apple charges for all of its products such that those who have the greatest health problems are most likely those that never afford their products.
Apple may want to sell an expesive product marketed as a health benefit, but they certainly do not want to pay taxes or to fund a public health system for those who cannot afford their products..

I don't know about other third parties but for app developers they don't share the data. You can only get basic health data like step count and even for that you have to explicitly mention what are you using this data for.

I think it’s a smart move, especially with the pandemic a lot of people are more health conscious. If they can make the Apple Watch can be an official medical device that insurance or HSA funds can cover they can secure a huge bag. They have the money to make the official shift to legitimize themselves especially if the sensors are very accurate.
