- In mid-July, a series of high-profile Twitter accounts began spamming the same messages asking users to send them bitcoin. Apple, Uber, Joe Biden, Elon Musk- the accounts affected were some of the most well-known brands and names on the planet. The culprit? A 17-year-old from Florida stands accused of being the mastermind behind the scam. The hack exposed big issues with Twitter’s security. What happens on the social network can move markets, start international scandals and ruin reputations. Here’s what happened, and what it means for the 2020 elections.

We're giving Twitter too much importance.
Twitter's great influence is a symptom of society's celebrity worship. Twitter wouldn't exist if people stopped put other people on pedestals and taking their words as gospel.

There's nothing to "sink in". Twitter is as vulnerable as Twitter already had been years ago, Hillary Clinton and every other political actor lose e-mails like they change underwear, and famous people always fall victim first to social engineering schemes, because they're the second group to weaponize altruism for their self-righteous agenda, the first being religion.

We’re talking about Twitter, right? The company whose ground breaking idea was the ability to post three sentences online at a time.... and then over a decade and billions of dollars in revenue the only major “innovation” was doubling the character limit per post..... that Twitter? Don’t feel too bad, I don’t think they were coming out with any earth shattering ideas anytime soon anyway.
This is a bit unfair. What about the innovation required to scale it up to 330 million global users? Or adding attachments to your tweet? Or making retweets and hastags and other such things searchable? What about TweetDeck? Or what about the systems innovation needed to manage the platform, automate it, and keep it all running smoothly?
There's a lot more going on here than you're giving it credit for. Massively scaled platforms of any kind are truly hard to do, even when you're not trying to do near-real-time messaging. It's not like the 4500 employees at Twitter spend their time doing nothing, you know. Granted, more of their time should arguably have been spent on security, but that's water under the bridge now.
Here’s a thought, stop believing everything you see on tv/the internet without further investigation? Idk...

Imagine when they dont do anything wrong while being on your account but reading all your messages and what not without you ever finding out, scary. It happens.

Probably by phishing a twitter employee and stealing their credentials.

The true reason they couldn't hack Twitter is that they put an additionnal security ring on him. Because twitter is so liberal they feared their own employee would try to disrupt his account.

Funny how everyone misses out on the obvious here. People that got scammed were in fact willingly giving away their money because of a message on social media. This shows how gullible and naive Twitter users really are. Instead of raising security people should raise their awareness and stop being blindly obedient to their idols. Sadly critical thinking is not popular these days.

That’s a probably very secure account with constantly changing passwords to ensure security. It has to be because you might be able to bring the US to the brink of war just by the wrong tweet being sent out.
