  • With more people stuck indoors and craving entertainment thanks to lockdowns across the country, you’d think that video game retailer GameStop would be thriving. In the business you need to make profit or you won't succeed. Opening a box of a new product and then trading it in, you need to profit from that. You can't please the customer by simply saying will give you 45$ for this when it sells for 69.99 new unopened. Not here to defend Gamestop but a lot of you "gamers" don't have a clue on how to run a business. Why would you buy new then trade it in for $30.00 that's a bad decision on your part but there are people who will do this. Then they complain they got ripped off and say "bad service"

Not that this excuses this, but if you're wondering why, corporate forces stores to unbox one copy of the title to shelve the empty box. And a lot of times that copy would end up being the last one.
The plus side though... Not much difference between a new and used title anymore. Usually employees will put any inserts with the disc so they cannot get stolen, and unless the game is really old then the case is usually fine.

And when you sell them a game, they take it off your hands right then and there. Of course they won't give you as much money as if you sold it yourself. You have to create a listing, pick a fair price and wait for someone to buy it. And you have to arrange to meet up with the buyer or ship the game. Well they really didn't cover the way they treat their employees, policies during the CV. kind of glossed over the trade-in program which you'd have to be pretty dumb to do regularly - even with eBay fees you'd almost always make out better selling vs. trading-in - you would likely do better selling at a garage sale compared to the value given at GS. From the financials perspective they covered most-if-not-all the bases - if you know a bit more about the culture then you know the other reasons - primarily that you know you're getting ripped off when you go there as a customer but have few other options. For our family (I'm the one with the wallet) we make GameStop our "last stop" after Target, BestBuy, and even WalMart. On (very) rare occasion they (GS) will have a "special edition" that my kids want but even then they'll say that's too much for what you get and get the "regular" one...

He failed to identify why people don't like to go into Gamestop (the overpricing, the cluttered nature of the stores and the relentless salespeople asking you to buy the magazine in years past).
He said people buy games online because they can use cloud storage to save, which isn't true.
Finally, he contradicted himself at the end saying that Xbox Series X and PS5 won't bail the company out, while failing to mention the shortages that the systems will surely have.

Not to mention that their "analysts" bought a gaming chair and own a console - they are now experts in the community. Not to take too much away from them - they're probably nice people and likely understand the financials behind what GS is _saying_ what's happening - the reality is all through the comments section of this video - people don't like doing business with GS. If the experience was better and prices paid for used gear/software was better I think it could survive (at least longer than it would without those changes) - I really don't know anyone who "likes" to go to GS - they want a game today and either they don't want to download it or don't have an easy way to pay for it on-line. Even buying t-shirts and Funko stuff is an ordeal - the sales never ring up correctly or items are in the wrong bin - when you think you're going to end up spending $50 for a couple t-shirts and a figure it'll be $70. Most of the time you leave thinking - I could have bought on Amazon and save $20-30....

Xbox series x and PS5 will not bail the company out just because they sell out like hotcakes. GameStop, as a physical brick and mortar store, has a lot of overhead and they're limited by supply side (quantity of new consoles). GameStop sold out of both PS5 and Series X preorders in seconds, but that does not mean the business is doing well given their enormous costs. Go look at their 2019 quarterly report lmao they are not gonna be miraculously saved by a new console launch. And once supply stabilizes and new consoles are ubiquitous a year from now, I guarantee people will look to other retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart for their new devices and GameStop as a last resort, especially since you'll almost certainly get free shipping for spending that much.

One experience I had was they offered me 40$ store credit for 10 games I was trading in that were relatively new and if I wanted cash, $5. Had I gone and sold them on my own I had at least $200 worth. They stopped caring about customers, they even opened new packaging and took out extra codes that came with the new game, repacked them in their packaging and sold the extra DLC on the side to make an extra buck. They are failing, and them screwing over so many people just has them on the side waving as they go under.

  • @weaselchumcweasel6032

Hey current Gamestop employee here, much to my own chagrin (the poor job market won't let me get out at the moment.) On a retail employee level, we're very much in agreement with the vast majority of customers that the trade market is HOT garbage, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel in terms of improving customer-end benefit for trade-in values. At best it's a predatory practice that takes advantage of low-income households that just need that extra $6 in store credit to make their kid stop crying because he/she wants the newest NBA or Mario game. Unfortunately, the claim that pre-owned is GS's bulk profit is true, and that's why trade values stay as low as possible, in order to bump up that 40% profit margin ever so slightly. From my perspective, Gamestop would be better suited in today's market by converting a majority of stores to a more Apple-style retail experience, with digital kiosks that allow customers to browse titles by category (new releases, best sellers, upcoming titles, etc.) while letting them read about the game, watch trailers and gameplay videos, and read reviews, while placing orders from the same kiosk (wow it printed out a digital code I can put into the playstation store, or wow i just hit a button and here comes an employee with my game, ready to take my payment!) Maybe even strike a deal with Steam to allow the selling of digital PC game keys that you can pay cash for? The stores seem to be stuck in 2007 from a business and aesthetic standpoint. A more modern, minimal design with multiple demo units to allow guests to try things before they buy would work wonders for the company; I can't tell you how many kids would wander into our store pre-pandemic to play the Playstation or Switch demo unit, then beg their parents for the game they were just playing.
And as far as pre-orders go, it's a frustrating, archaic business practice that used to serve the purpose of gauging how interested the general public was in a certain piece of software, so the company could then plan accordingly on how many copies to purchase for sale from the publishers and know which regions of the country to send them to, but with the advent of social media and mass internet usage, the numbers and interest are right there for the company to look at sans pre-order. Unfortunately they're too stubborn to let go of that $5 down that "guarantees a return customer" because hey they got $5 for doing nothing, even though someone that's interested in a game will come in regardless on release day expecting to see it there, only to be greeted with the dreaded "Well did you pre-order...?" And unfortunately the company doesn't have the capital necessary to send every store X number of Fate Extella discs, unlike the big box guys like Best Buy and Target, so they're locked into their ineffective pre-order routine for the foreseeable future. For some reason, the company that deals in technology is either afraid to embrace modern tech, or they're too ignorant of the way the tech industry functions nowadays to understand the importance of using the internet to our advantage. In fact, we laid off about 50% of our IT and customer service departments during the height of the pandemic closures. Why? Because they'd rather let go of a crucial component of our company than take any amount of pay cuts in order to keep the company afloat. The sad truth is that the upper management of the company has no idea what they're doing, or what kind of business they're trying to run, because all they see is the numbers from the glory days of 2007 and the practices that brought those numbers to fruition (because those sales couldn't have possibly been dependent on the Nintendo Wii, or an avalanche of highly-anticipated software... /sarcasm.) So on behalf of all GameStop employees, I deeply apologize to the public for the way we do business because in order for us to keep our jobs and pay our bills, we have to "make those numbers happen," which means pitching Pro cards, pre-orders, and warranty attach in a way that's starting to feel a lot like a drive-thru "...do you want fries with that?"
George Sherman. Boy. If you see this hit me up. I have ideas for you since you clearly have none.
