  • CNBC.com's MacKenzie Sigalos brings you the day's top business news headlines. On today's show, CNBC's Deirdre Bosa walks through the legal fight between California and rideshare giants Uber and Lyft, after the two companies narrowly avoided shutting down operations in the state. Plus, with the S&P 500 hitting a new record, CNBC's Bob Pisani explains how the stock market can be so high while so many Americans are struggling and out of work.
CORRECTION (August 28, 2020) At 9:45, this video misstated survey results about whether ride-share drivers want to remain independent contractors. Uber and Lyft say drivers want to remain independent contractors by a four-to-one margin, citing a survey.

These new California regulations would turn Uber and Lyft into Taxi companies. The reason they can undercut the taxi companies is because they don’t have to pay for wages, healthcare benefits and paid time off. Uber and Lyft’s business model depends on independent contractors. That is how they have managed to put taxi companies out of business. You’d essentially make Uber and Lyft the same thing as a taxi company, which is not how their business model works.

The courts were right. Of course, they are employees. I would hope that's obvious to all normal people. Not paying for benefits is one of the bigger reasons why there is so much inequality in America. As the French learned in the early 1800s, concentrating wealth usually doesn't end well. Unless something changes, and soon, the end result will be the same in America.

Anon I agree, the government should’ve never stopped regulating them, $400 a ticket to bring a backpack and have my knees to my chest. But now who needs who? It’s pretty similar to the “I’m hungry but I don’t want to eat what you cooked.” Then you must not be that hungry.

WOW. Never fly again in modern America? Passenger Airlines have not made real money or profit since the airplane was invented. If we feel the Post office and mail is an essential need for America, why not flying and transit? No, I don't want the U.S. Air Dept. that would be as much a looser financially as the P.O., but there should be some thought in NOT allowing airlines to "go away" with some U.S. support.

    • @mikhailhunter5277
      @mikhailhunter5277 3 년 전 +2

They're are in too much debt, without a bailout, it would be the employees who suffer not necessarily the shareholders. Because if the airlines sell, the Profits would go to shareholders after debts and expenses are paid. But if a few of them were selling at the same time, it would drive value down because of supply and demand.
The Debts would be paid, then the shareholders will take whatever is left over or share in the loss. Even if they took a MASSIVE loss, it would be a tax write off for the next 2 decades. The rich would still come out on top here. Meanwhile the employees get laid off, furloughed, benefits reduced, or pay reduced.
The sale of an airline would either be to a competitor or an international buyer. The government wouldn't want that if it's an American company. In fact the government is needed to approve large sales just between American companies.
Believe it or not the big government bailouts are for THE PEOPLE not corporations. (Some corporations use bailouts in ways they shouldn't, won't deny that).
But a bailout is The government attempts at trying to curb umeployment and long term damages of major corporations shutting down.
If an airline workers get laid off, they won't have money to buy stuff, pay their bills or debts. That will negatively affect retail because of less sales, utility companies and even worse banks.
That will in turn stop the flow of money eventually leading to someone else in another industry getting laid off. If airlines can't operate because of no employees then then airplanes won't require as much fuel, meaning less sales in oil, oil prices go down more people get laid off. They spend less, other people get laid off because they are spending less.
The literal only thing keeping this country together is the economic stimulus package, 0% interest from the feds and the forebearances. We would be eating some serious S**t in this country right now if it wasn't for those.
Houses would be going into foreclosure at a rapid pace and flood the market. That will in turn decrease the value of other homes in the area. Destroying equity that homeowners have built, because they would be upside down on their mortgage. It wouldn't make sense for them to stay in the house or continue to pay on it. They would owe more on the house than what it's worth. So they will abandon it. Banks would spike interests for new home buyers making it impossible for them to buy homes. Here is what would result
Foreclosure and abandon homes would mean the banks aren't getting their monthly payment. Which is actually YOUR money they lent to other people by the way.
No one would buy homes because interest rates would be too high and too strict requirments.
You're going to want your retirement fund, but it's gone. The banks don't have it because it was loaned out to developers to build neighborhoods.
Developers can't pay the bank back because no ones buying houses, because the bank won't lend... The developers fire the contractors and stop buying supplies to build houses Homedepot goes out of business, the cycle continues and And BOOMMMMM.
This is why companies need bailouts, they pay it back eventually if they agree to take it. The government does nothing for free, not even those rescue efforts you see them do internationally.

You could really make money driving Lyft/Uber first few year it operated, but as they pocketed more and more percentage of the fare and eliminated high demand bonuses after their IPO in 2018, it became simply unfeasible to drive for them anymore. After numerous protests by drivers, the State finally listened and tried to protect the drivers but Uber/Lyft turned it around like always and made it seem like the drivers will loose out. Well, the drivers have nothing more to loose with already ridiculous low pay and absolutely zero benefits (you can keep your 10 cents/gallon discount @ Shell for the Gold club members). IN CALIFORNIA UBER LIED, CHEATED, ROBBED, AND STOLE FROM THEIR DRIVERS!
Uber Charges on average $6.00 per Mile after fee's as most rides are less than 5 miles.
Uber Then pays drivers 0.59 cents a mile.
Drivers have to pay Gas Costs out of the 0.59 cents a mile.
Drivers also pay for the Car, and 100% of maintenance Costs out that 0.59 cents a mile.
They have to pay for expensive insurance out of that 0.59 cents a mile as well.
They have to pay for Cell GPS, Car Washes, and tune-ups out that 0.59 cents a mile!
Uber and Lyft are Criminal Thiefs!
If you like driving for almost free while you wear your car out, as uber lies, cheats, and robs you for every nickel they can get, then work for the criminals at uber!
You make money for the first 6 weeks. they tell you they only take 20%, but the criminals at Uber actually take 40% to 70% of what customers pay! and the criminals do not even pay for the GAS Costs, they pay nothing, they cheat drivers on actual miles driven, they lie to drivers showing different amounts, to cheat drivers out of even more pay. Uber completely sucks in every single way possible. The con artist criminals should be in jail! Screw Uber and Lyft! Also, they take so much you cannot even make 100.00 a day after gas costs!

Driver make the first few bonus and once those are gone they find out how crappy the business model is being a Uber/Lyft driver. But they likely already locked into some kind of investment for becoming a driver. They either call it a lost and get out or just hang in there hoping things would change. At the same time, more new driver flood in for the signup bonus and the vicious cycle continues. At the end of the day, the winners are top executives from the two companies, the ad agency, commercial insurance companies for some regions, maybe the rider to some extent (at least the big city taxi cab now provides slightly better service and newer cars instead of crown vict). But most people who you think are making the money, is not.

Independent contractors and "gig" employees are now required to be hired? How does that create opportunity? That will mean that most people whom were previously excluded from the big corporate hiring process are now unable to earn a living. This gives big business absolute control over who gets to make money, and who gets left out of the economy. See this for what it really is, a way to control who gets to have money.

AB5 is an absolute disaster for high paying blue collar jobs. I could care less what happens to Uber and Lyft even though they have a better way of doing business than cabs. What I care about are owner operators, media contracts and general contractors. These are jobs you can get without a college education, yet pay 6 figures. Instead they will be switched over to union and non-exempt employees who will never see 6 figures unless they can hold their job for several decades. It also gets in between a contract of 2 entities, and reduces the bargaining power of the individual.

As more people become Independent contractors, they can’t touch that tax money as easy. They have to depend on ICs writing a check to them. They rather be able to deduct all their tax revenue from employees. It’s easier to do because you never touch the money they take on a W2.

Giving the driver 70% to 85% of the total fair being charged to the rider. ... This is simple math for the state - of course, many of these driver are new to America and do not understand their protection under fair labor laws. Many new to America don't understand why we have laws to protect the veterans, to protect our children, to protect the disabled and the elderly - the senior citizen - the senior member of our society. - Don't get me wrong there are executive and gatekeepers to who works or not that don't understand our ways here in America - thank God that there others who not only protect the innocence but are constantly make an improvements to the American way of life.

No, Uber was not forced to change overnight! Uber and Lyft had years to prepare for this court ruling and had years to make adjustments. It was their choice to ignore it for years and now they threaten to leave California, leaving customers high and dry. Temporaarily that is because Uber needs California because it's 15% of their revenues. Yet they will maintain Uber Eats because now it's a record-breaking booming business, regardless that they will also be considered employess too. Yet you blame the Government. Uber was worth $70 billion at it's IPO with this "Employee reclassification lawsuit" factored in. People, $70 billion! We are selfiish in nature, more people need Uber, rather than care about how Uber may abuse their drivers. At least if your going to speak this subject have the decency to speak facts. While parked, my friend's Bmw's moonroof was damaged by a guy trying to kick his girlfreind's face. Uber first deemed it not eligible for insurance claims. After badgeiring Uber, Uber finally submitted to Insurance, but driver has to pay $1,000 deductible for $2,000 damage, hence car never repaired. Driver wanted to pursue criminal investigtion and sue riders in court but Uber will never release the rider's names. Called lawyers, no lawyers will help or take the case, police cannot take action without riders names.
