Can The U.S. Afford Reparations?

  • The disproportionate impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Black Americans coupled with the protests following George Floyd and Breonna Taylor's deaths, have pushed racial injustice to the forefront of the national debate. Politicians, states and cities have started to look at reparations for descendants of slaves as a possible way to solve persistent inequalities. While a concrete compensation plan seems far out of reach, experts are starting to offer tangible solutions. William Darity suggests a $10 to $12 trillion program, distributed over the course of 10 years. Darrick Hamilton suggests implementing a complimentary program called baby bonds, which would provide a quasi universal basic income for newborn babies. However opponents say that now is not the time to increase federal spending, as the country faces over $24 trillion in national debt and the covid-19 pandemic. Watch the video above to find out more about if the U.S. could afford reparations for slavery.

So, if one is against reparations, then, one is "justifying slavery?" THAT is preposterous. In response to one who has replied to one of my replies: "You actually ask me: "so you would like to justify slavery?" I would NOT like to do that. Nor, did I do that. Nor, will I ever do that. DO not put words in my mouth. From what I have written, you cannot justify what you have inferred in asking me that question. However, you are NOT going to get reparations, whether you like it or not. And, this is the reality, especially, given the fact that WWIII has started, and, it is only a matter of time when the USA will be at direct, kinetic war with Russia AND China. The supply chains have been breaking down, and, will continue to do so, more and more, for the next few years. You have no IDEA of what is coming. Maybe, then, you and the black community in america will just see how good you have had it. Black american have had it far better than ANY other people of sub-saharan DNA in the world, even when slavery still existed in america. Pretty soon, EVERYONE will have it bad in america, except for the ultra-rich elitists, the ones that you and your kind voted for, the same ones that sold us out to our enemies for decades, and, built up China AND Russia. But, at least you don't have to put up with a few "mean tweets," do you? Everything the democrats AND some republicans said about Trump was fictional, but, THEY did everything of which they accused him. And, keep in mind, that blacks did better under Trump in his first 3 years than ANYTIME in american history. Most importantly, all of the catastrophic things that are happening now, and will happen in the near future would not be happening if Trump was still in office, and, you KNOW it. But, hey, good to know that you all vilified the right man for the job, and, voted along the lines of the DNC, in hopes of getting "reparations." The DNC all strung you along like mindless drones, promising you the sky, by gave you NOTHING."

1#. HEIR. At common law. A person who succeeds, by the rules of law , to an estate in lands, tenements, or hereditaments, upon the death of his ancestor, by descent and right of relationship. The term “heir” has a very different signification at common law from what it has in those states and countries which have adopted the civil law. In the latter, the term is indiscriminately applied to all persons who are called to the succession, whether by the act of the party or by operation of law. The person who is created universal successor by a will is called the “ testamentary heir; “ and the next of kin by blood is, in cases of in testacy, called the “ heir at law,” or “ heir by intestacy.” The executor of the common law in many respects corresponds to the testamentary heir of the civil law. Again, the administrator in many respects corresponds with the heir by intestacy. By the common law, executors and administrators have no right except to the personal estate of the deceased; whereas the heir by the civil law is authorized to administer both the personal and real estate. Second, what is West Africa? What institutions responsible for slavery still stand today? The answer is none.

We couldn't "afford" those things you listed either! We are over 20 trillion dollars in debt! But that's besides the point. The point is that reparations is theft. Each person is responsible for their own individual actions, not the actions of others. I have never been a slave owner, and I wouldn't want to, I am vehemently against slavery of ANY race of people, and I had nothing to do with slavery, so I do not owe my money that I worked hard for to people today that have never even experienced slavery. You can't justify punishing whites living today who had nothing to do with slavery just because of what people with the same skin color who lived in the past did. Every person in America today has the opportunity to go out and find a job and earn their own money, and they can accomplish their dreams if they're willing to put in the work and not give up. Those who want reparations just want free hand outs instead of working hard to earn their own money.

govt money should be based upon need, NOT COLOR. f--k reparations. WHile I will say that slavery is wrong, and, evil, as it is wrong to own another person, AN IMPORTANT POINT needs TO BE MADE CLEAR. The VAST majority of slaves, virtually all of them that came from sub-saharan africa, and, sold off of the shores of western africa, were already slaves in sub-saharan africa. OBVIOUSLY, I am not saying that slavery is OK or justified, as I am not. I am simply stating that SLaves were bought and sold amongst the various african tribes for thousands of years before the muslim invasions of sub-saharan africa of the 7th century ad throughout this very day today. The atlantic slave trade did not begin until about the 16th century, 900 years after the muslims were doing it in sub-saharan africa AND all throughout the mediterranean, I might add. And, keep in mind, that only about 5% of ALL of the african slaves actually went onto the ships to north america; more went to central and southern america, and, far more stayed in sub-saharan africa and went to north africa, the middle east, and, into europe, some, even going into asia...have ye suffured? ALL PEOPLES HAVE SUFFERED. black people IN THE WEST: quit blaming your insufficiencies on the white man. yOU ARE lucky THAT YOUR ANCESTORS WERE BROUGHT OUT OF AFRICA. And even if each individual in the African American community decided to forego a nicer standard of living for their family in the present and stable investments in the future in order to pool their money for the uncertain benefits lobbyists might be able to secure, are you saying that you think the system is going to give an oppressed group of people enough money to buy out the system itself?

Most of y'all wouldn't last a week in Africa. No welfare, poor infrastructure, lack of clean water, etc. Get a Gofundme set up. I'll pitch in for your one way ticket under one condition - you can't come back to live. Only visit. Deal homie?

I'm not going anywhere, your ancestors, work their fingers to the bones because of these people, so who does this land really belong to, not the ones that did no work, that for sure. They made this country what it is today, so this is their country, their blood is everywhere. So I stand here for the people who slave for this land, and did not get a chance to enjoy their hard, hard labor. This is their land.

The U.S. should not be the only power flipping the bill. Belgium Spain France and GB need to participate

Don't forget African countries. They were enslaving long before Europeans arrived.

@@derp8575 that is so true. Corrupt African leaders are enslaving children and killing adults as we speak. Unfortunately it takes forever to put them on trial. We all know why. It would be impossible for African militaries to return and distribute the wealth among the ppl and setup a functional government. Can we pinpoint which powers/countries in Africa had involvement with the slave trade in the 1500 and 1600s? They don’t have near as much monies as those four European powers. France would bankrupt if they cut money ties with certain African countries
