Can Jeep Stay Ahead Of Its SUV Rivals?

  • Jeep has a strong brand and illustrious history dating back to World War II, making it one of the strongest brands in the automotive world. It has a military pedigree that dates back to World War II and for generations it has sustained its rugged, classic American image. It is also Fiat Chrysler’s top-selling brand, and it inspires a rare sort of cult-like devotion other automakers would kill for. But it needs to stay ahead of an increasingly competitive market.
Jeep specializes in sport utility vehicles like the Wrangler - it does not make a single sedan or sports coupe. That has left it extraordinarily well-positioned for the recent boom in SUVs. However, the secret is out, and automakers everywhere are ramping up their own SUV and pickup inventories, and some are aiming their own products squarely at segments Jeep has long dominated.
Jeep is answering with a slew of new innovations and new products to preserve its strong position and envied reputation. Industry insiders say Jeep can no longer expect that its legendary name and distinctive styling will keep buyers coming back.

Toyotas no longer have a fully boxed frame because they got unreasonably sued for rusting frames on very old vehicles. Instead of just having a legal statement about the longevity of the frame, they decided to compromise the vehicle with a C channel frame.

If only Toyota sold the Land Cruiser 70 series in the US, the wrangler would have some real competition.

    • @michaelm1589
      @michaelm1589 3 년 전 +11

They are almost indestructible. However, it is a very old platform and Toyota left some compromises in the design when they widened the front and put the V8 diesel in 13 years ago (low alternator, narrower rear tracks, old 5 speed manual and no auto option). The LC70 is basically a piece of industrial and farming equipment that has been made road legal.
Here in Australia people spend big money fixing some of these issues to make them more suitable for off road and towing after already spending AUD $70k+ buying one new. Part of the reason is that the LC70 is largely a developing market product so they spend the bare minimum to keep it viable for sale in Australia and NZ, the only two fully developed countries that it sells.
I think with the LC300 likely not going to the US market Toyota may decide to reintroduce the LC brand in the US with an all new hardcore offroad model after seeing the success of Jeep, Bronco and Defender.

My father had a 1983 CJ-7 Jeep that he bought it used in early 90’s. He had it till in 2002. He got a 2002 TJ Jeep. I did drove his newer one a few times. Even my mother drove it a few times on the 2nd one. My father used the 2nd Jeep for plowing snow in the driveway or even his neighbor’s driveway, too. They had it for a long time. In 2017 my mother sold it to a friend towards my father with the plow. My mother gave them a good price of it. It didn’t have any rust on it. It was a good 3rd vehicle for my parents a number of years. My sister drove the 1st Jeep for one summer. The 2nd summer she had a little problems with it the following summer. My sister ended up with a 1991 Ford Escort to drive around in. My father still drive the older Jeep during the summers in early 90’s. They have 2 other cars to drive back in the early 90’s. When they retired they gotten a 1993 Ford Explorer from trading their 2 vehicles. My mother was driving my sister’s car during the fall and part of the winter months. For a little bit over a year in the mid 90’s my mother gotten a 1995 Ford Escort station wagon about 3 years. My father trade that car on a 1997 Ford F-150 truck for him to drive. My mother had the 1998 Ford Explorer as her car to drive around in. My father traded the truck on the 2002 Jeep TJ. That Jeep did run for awhile in 2016. It had a couple flat tires and it didn’t work for awhile. My father had the Jeep fixed during the summer of 2016. It did sat in the garage till I drove it on New Year’s Day in 2017. I only had it that day towards the following day. I was driving my father’s 2008 Ford Expedition just shortly after his death. I got used to driving it for about 3 months. That vehicle was liked a tank for me. I even did parallel parked it once. I did an awesome job in it. I gave a lot of space for this one mini van to backed out of.

We have a Wrangler. It feels dangerous - ready to roll if I have to maneuver to avoid an accident. I've had to hit the brakes for wildlife and the wheels lock and it skids to a stop. None of my other SUVs had that issue. That combined with the lack of side airbags makes me pretty nervous. Not sure how long we're going to keep it. Tons of fun once you get to the offroad locations! Getting there on long highway and freeway drives though - like I said, makes me nervous.

Offcourse it being specifically build for off roading it will have higher road ground clearance which makes it more vulnerable to roll overs on sharp turns, this problem is somewhat common with most of the SUVs but then again most of the SUV don't showoff themselves as an extreme off-roading machine
I myself not a fan of SUVs in general as I don't find them "practical" in day to day life, I would rather go for trekking, as off roading isn't my cup of tea
Though I love sedans and I reckon u might have driven a lot of sedans well ,that might be why u might feel things a bit off when u drive ur jeep , sedans grips its whole body to the ground as it moves with excellent control and for me that feeling so good

Without watching the video, I don't think I'd really put jeeps in the same class as general SUV's. When I think of a Jeep, I think of offroading. Most SUV's can do that too, but they're not built specifically for that purpose. A regular SUV is great for transporting large luggage (not towing) or the rows of seats are great if you have children. I know I appreciated having two rows of seats for more space when my family got a van, as I have two brothers and nobody likes sitting in the middle seat like when in a car.

Bought 2 Jeep Sahara 4xe hybrids in the beginning of May, as My girl is a Jeep girl. Two things I said I'd never do.
1.) Never buy a new car
    2.) Never buy a Jeep
I was looking for a hybrid but most of them compromise the vehicle to make an "egg." I somehow came across the Jeep 4xe and went to look at it and bought it that day without even test driving it. What I liked was that Jeep decided with this model "Jeep First" when building this. My girl, not being out done bought the exact same but in a different color. We both opted for the 4xe Sahara "mall crawler" edition...lol
Here's why I broke my two rules. #1 is because of the 7,500 tax credit. This EV qualifies for the full amount which makes this vehicle less than a gas powered Sahara with all the same options. Not to mention as I'm looking for hybrids and electric vehicles, this cost is within the same as others. #2 is because Jeep said "Jeep first!" Also the fact that it is a plug in hybrid and the HVAC components do not need the engine running to work.
Overall we love these vehicles which gives us the availability to do anything from going to the mall in comfort or driving the sand dunes in Corolla NC with the wild horses
