- CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam breaks down how cold water conditions in the Patapsco River could impact a rescue operation after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed when it was struck by a cargo ship. #CNN #News
Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone period and to the souls lost Rest peacefully
Someone is definitely going to jail after this.
Its not the water temperature so much as the 185 feet fall.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. How do you survive that? 😐
Oh god 🙏🏻
But you're inside the cars, so survival can happen to a somewhat large degree
Correct.
@@hansudowolfrahm4856only if you manage to get out of the car very quickly
Rest in peace to those people in the cars
They are now.
This is horrible!!!! My God! I pray for everyone involved. I would hate to be that pilot or ship Captain of that ship.
The port of Baltimore will be closed until the debris can be removed. Ships inside the port are trapped.
The ship was coming from the wrong (south) side of the port as the long form video starts. The container port is on the north side.
The engines were belching dark smoke out of the exhaust funnels indicating they were at or near maximum.
💯🤡
A person plunged into cold water experiences shock with involuntary gasping and possible water inhalation. Hypothermia is only an issue if the person avoids drowning in the first minute.
What about a fall from that height?
@@samanthab1923 Just as likely to cause a very quick death.
This is similar to the Tampa Bay, Sunshine Skyway Bridge Disaster, in 1980. Story on KRplus.
That replacement bridge is still scary to drive over. Supposedly haunted 👻
Damn, that's messed up.
Very sad and now half the city cut off.
🙏 this is getting crazy.
Like all accidents, for those working on the bridge or crossing the bridge in a vehicle, it all happened in the blink of an eye. For survivors and families affected, thoughts and prayers.
Prayers 😔
Heartbreaking, so sorry for these folks🙏🏻😭
Heartbreaking! Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.May their souls rest in peace.Prayers go out to the people of Maryland.
One would think bridges are built to withstand and prevent such things........hmmmmm.
Not so. That bridge was built in 77. I sat in traffic for hours once on the NJ Parkway when a runaway barge threatened the Driscoll Bridge.
Not when it was engineered 47-48 years ago.
I mean this bridge was built almost 50 years ago bridges aren’t built like this anymore
@@kashshhds8824Should have been replaced with a modern bridge as container ships get bigger and traffic increases. I hope other bridges are upgraded before another disaster.
Old construction. A new bridge probably would not have collapsed that much. A small part would have collapsed, I guess, but a modern bridge should be able to withstand the failing of 1 column.
Hours ago and people still in the water? Shame!
Why aren’t you down there helping genius?

Because you can easily open the window and get out. Or open the door when the vehicle is filled and swim
same reason the world wasted time on the titan sub...effort makes ya look good, and it's publicity, it's a bad look to just come out to basically tell everyone something like "everyone is dead, hope you don't know them, later. "
in a lake this might make sense, but here if you get out of the car,you either are or aren't getting to land soon alone.
basically pointless but can't have the news say that.

It’s not easy (especially under such sudden & catastrophic circumstances) but it is technically possible and you don’t prematurely give up on a search.

It’s not “publicity” ffs. Don’t insult these dedicated & incredibly hardworking rescue first responders.
They aren't. 😢
Not long enough to think they're alive..Hyperthermia is the worst as it sets in pretty quickly..They've been sitting in that water for hours..Getting out of a car sinking is also very difficult..
My brother was playing ice hockey on a friends pond. Fell in near a thin ice part. He was a young healthy athletic teen & he tells how quickly that cold water disables you. You panic immediately. He was just able to pull himself out. Scary
HYPOthermia
Is that a good bridge design that 1 point of failure takes down the entire thing?
Exactly; in third world countries even the Bay Area bridge, don’t collapse like toys when boats hit them. This is so ghetto.
@@michaelanderson3816 bridge was built in the 70s, not in the 2010s. maybe wait until you get more info before making such comments.
@@the0ne809 whatever sis, you’re my point, America is falling apart and y’all are being gaslight. Wake up.

@@michaelanderson3816 It's not like a tugboat hit the bridge pylon -- this was a large, fully loaded cargo ship weighing several hundred tons. There aren't many man-made structures that could deflect that strong an impact, and from the looks of it the ship hit the pylon dead-on, slamming its full weight into it. Perhaps if the ship had hit it from the side, the pylon, and the bridge itself, might have stayed intact. Or if the ship had been moving at a much slower speed... In any case, your conclusion that this was proof that "America is falling apart" seems based on the reasoning level of a small child... or a conspiracy theorist.
Prayers and safety for people in water .. I have no words but my questions will be saved for later ..right now want to see if any people can be saved
It's not about the temperature, it's about people can't breathe beneath the water dude
48 F as a water temperature is pretty cold. I know a few people who go swimming in the sea in winter when the water temperature is below 45F, but they are completely mad.
It all depends on what clothing people in the water were wearing. The warmer the clothing the longer they can last, but if they are heavy when water logged that makes drowning very likely
Clothing makes no difference once it's wet dude. People wear wet or dry suits in water, they don't throw an extra sweater on. Thick clothing is a distinct disadvantage once you're wet
where there any traffic on the bridge? I will pray for you all. this is very scary, I cannot imagine the horror of those on the bridge.
Mostly construction crew workers with very reduced traffic flow because of the work zones and the time of night. Work trucks & personnel fell into the Patapsco, unfortunately.
@@x77punk77xgood thing it was not at peak traffic. Still sad for those unfortunate souls.
Was the captain drunk?
I doubt it, the video shows the vessel losing power multiple times
Accident means unintentional event
The captain would not be navigating the ship through the port channel it would have been a pilot sent from the port authority that is seasoned at navigating the river. 😉
Pilot order aera
Doesn’t matter, this happens overseas and even in the Bay Area, and when ships clip or hit a bridge the bridges don’t collapse like toys. So ghetto!
The Guardian newspaper says that the same ship was involved in another accident in Antwerp, Belgium in 2016. It seems a little out of this world that the entire bridge collapsed after the ship hit that support column/beam. I wonder if there were some major structural flaws on the bridge as well. That bridge was built in 1977. I keep saying this, but the Roman were better at building bridges. There are bridges that are some 2000 years old all over Europe that are still standing. There're some ports that were built by the Romans that are still in use today.
We don't fear death but the way we die. Rest in peace
Falling from that height will feel like hitting a concrete block.
It's bad enough that so many media personalities use broken sentences populated with uh uh um uh, but when it's a serious event and viewers are trying to gather information it's grueling to listen to and try to stitch together what the hell they're trying to say.
Try getting up at like 2 or 2:30 or whatever and being super-sharp by 5 a.m. for a developing story in its early stages of yielding confirmed facts.
@@x77punk77x Reporting on breaking news of a tragedy must always be difficult for any anchor. But this is not unusual for Ms Casey. It was a huge problem when she was on MSNBC and seemed to get a little better when she went to CNN. But old habits don't change.
I started watching her broadcast at 5:40 a.m. and this clip was the best of her coverage.
I'm just saying it's frustrating when every second or third word is uhh.
It has been irritating me lately as well. I give a bit of grace for incidents in the middle of the night like this, but getting rid of uhs and ums in speech is something you lean in introductory public speaking. Seems like these networks could train up their people for 200 bucks a head by getting them a spot at the local community colleges next three day course.
@@kmo9790 It seems lately that populating every sentence with uh and umm is a prerequisite for being a news anchor. I can think of one very popular anchor who would start almost every single sentence with ahemmm and then go into the uh and um.
I completely understand the hesitant uh or um when gathering ones thoughts. We all do it, but when it becomes an integral part of every sentence it is annoying and takes away from the information being imparted.
I hope everyones ok
Awful, poor people.

How that cargo ship was there in the first place? From the video seems they couldn't pass without hitting the bridge because the height. Something doesn't add up here.

Everybody making comments on the possibility of a "drunk" (foreign) Captain. But don't these huge containers ships need a professional/very skilled "Pilot"? who comes on board, to manoeuvre a container ship out of such a big port/harbour??
Here in the 🇳🇱Port of Rotterdam all big cargo ships are steered out to the North Sea, by extremely skilled Pilots, before the ship's Captain may/can take over his own ship.
And by the way: very often international/foreign container ships have skilled "Western" Captains. Eventhough the crew may all be from a "cheaper" labour country.
Frank Sobotka is going to be upset after this, no ships coming in and out of the harbor
Any recent mothman sightings in the area?

who does manage the traffic in chesapic bay?
if you watch the video you can see how the lights go out a couple of times before hitting the bridge. it seems it lost power and the ship was not able to steer on time.
They are dead in cold water, no air. 10 minutes
What are they talking about? It's not the middle of the ocean. Anyone who can keep his/her head above the water surface should be able to reach land nearby.
If you can't swim and/or drown, then that's not a relevant question.
I understand that nad news is difficult in this situation, but this wasn't a rescue mission anymore after 15 minutes when the bridge went down.

One thing to note is that ships have been running their engines much harder, due to making up time for the shipping slow downs that the Houthi attacks caused.
