Best they could do with the short amount of time from 911 call until the incident was stopping traffic from entering the bridge. I imagine it was first responders worst nightmare knowing those on the bridge were in imminent danger but couldn't risk warning them without endangering themselves.

They’re probably different news agencies and they have to report to their bosses. If they don’t ask questions then they’ll probably be let go of. Plus remember it’s hard to understand what people are saying when everyone is trying to talk at once. Plus if a news agency reports what another one asked, they could be sued for plagiarism. So they ask their own version of the question so they can write it down in their papers or media and it would 100% be their own.
You can feel the sadness from the police officer speaking when he was saying that they had to stop. You can tell his heart is breaking. I am so sorry to all the victims and the first responders handling it.

When a vehicle accidentally falls into water, the situation can be extremely urgent:
1. Stay calm.
2. Unbuckle your seatbelt immediately.
3. Before water fills the vehicle, quickly open the windows or use a safety hammer (if prepared in advance), or break the window with the pointed end of a seat headrest.
4. Avoid trying to open the doors as this could cause water to enter more quickly.
5. The windows serve as the best escape route. If they won’t open, wait for the water pressure inside and outside the vehicle to equalize before attempting to open a door.
6. As soon as a window is open, exit the vehicle quickly, ensuring children and other passengers escape first.
7. Once out of the car, swim towards the surface straight away. If disoriented, follow the direction of air bubbles.
8. If you can’t escape, try to call for help or use the car’s emergency system.
9. Alongside these actions, consider reciting a prayer, mantra, or sacred words from your religious or spiritual tradition, as this also helps maintain calmness in the crisis.
Thank you for the advice. Anyone driving over a bridge might want to think about having a kit in your vehicle containing a seatbelt cutter & a hammer or tool that’ll break your car window. 💔

They fell 100+ feet before hitting the water, and then landed on bridge segments or had bridge segments land on them. The fact that 2 of them survived it at all is incredible.
If it's too late for step 3, wait calmly for water to fill the vehicle for the pressure that even out, then open the door

It took 4 1/2 years to build the Key bridge that just came down !
There's video. You can watch the ship lose power, regain it, and then strike the bridge. An accident, by all appearances. What I don't understand is why they're only mentioning the workers who were on the bridge when you can clearly see at least one set of headlights and silhouette of a car going down with it.
I'm sure the construction workers arrived on the bridge in a vehicle. It was likely parked near them.

I saw clips showing a moving 18 wheeler go down with one of the spans earlier today. THAT was not part of any construction crew!
Go watch it again, that's not a semi-it's the road/concrete surface of the bridge separating from the steel structure. There are several 3-4 pickup trucks with lights on and flashing.

That is what they did. Traffic was stopped from entering the bridge before the boat collided. The only casualties were part of a construction crew fixing potholes on the bridge.

No one ever thinks something like this can happen I have been over that bridge 100’s of times without ever giving this a thought.This is terrible for those directly involved in this tragedy my prayers are with the families who still don’t have answers !! I have also fished in the Baltimore harbor including under this bridge many times,what I can say is the shipping lane was dredged many years ago so that ships of this size could come in and out of Baltimores port !! Again my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those missing from this terrible accident !!

Sincere condolences to the families involved and wishing the divers safety in what now becomes a recovery effort. I'm just glad this didn't happen during higher traffic usage. Not to underplay the reality of these families but this could've been so much more horrific, and I just can't get my head around the herculean search, rescue, and recovery if that was the scenario.

I know there are approx 7 or more workers. but there were a couple of cars, lights on driving.
and a semi, actively moving as well. there were people driving those vehicles.
they all went down into the river, with the roadway.
There was no semi. There were 3-4 pickup trucks on the right hand section. The what looks like black roadway separates from the steel frame of the bridge and literally rolls like an earthquake.
From what is known so far, it seems that this port is less oriented and signposted than the parking lot of a shopping mall or supermarket. Don't have signal buoys? Although they are hampered at night by city lights. Are there no navigation charts with a channel or route to be taken?

1) it was night.
2) you can clearly see the ships lights go out. So it lost power
3) no power means no steering, no engines
4) it isn't a car so no brakes.

Fire? Are you talking about the cloud of smoke seen when the power was restored the first time? It's been speculated that was from the emergency diesel generator kicking on.

No. continued sparks after. The impact was brief and a snap vs shearing? At least three points of spark. If the media would have addressed it would have answered the question. Thoughts after?
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
I've inundated myself with information on this event and come to the conclusion that they had a technical malfunction resulting in power failure, which killed power to the engine. When the engine dies, the ship's gonna just go where the water wants it to. So they tried to throw anchor to stop it and tried to get the engine back on when the power was back up and throw it in reverse, but it was just too late. It takes time to slow or halt the pace of a 600ft ship, but there wasn't enough time for that even when the event initiated. Based on what I've heard and read, it appears that they did everything they could to prevent it, but that entire description happened within the span of 30 seconds... So even trying to get the bridge shut down, there just wasn't time to get the construction workers off I imagine.

First thing this morning on the news they were reporting that video captured everything-the ship lost power about two minutes away from the bridge-they alerted authorities, police shut down traffic-and then the ship hit the bridge-the entire collapse took 20 seconds.
RIP to the victims 😢. Just imagine driving on a bridge and suddenly it totally collapses under you. And you find yourself suspended in the air with your car and then splashing in the freezing cold water. I watched the footage of the bridge collapsing, from far away it looks skinny. But then so does the container ship that is huge.

According to an article in USA Today: The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction."
May I ask, given that they fell into a river, what was the working theory for them being alive after a couple of hours? With their heads clearly not being above water?

I understand the water temperature there was 47 degrees F. A person can survive between 1-3 hours. This happened about 1:30 AM so the possibility of anyone alive now is slim to none. And with murky water and all kinds of debris - it's extremely dangerous for divers now.
Because it would be impossible for them to be alive. The water is 50' deep there. They fell over 100' down. Please use your brain and imagine all that. The water temp is 48 degrees. You can't live for long in that cold water.
