Ship lost power, twice, watch the lights go out. Quick-start of power plant probably fouled the plant hence black smoke pouring out just before collision. Tugs would've been cast-off once the ship was pulled from the terminal and underway into the channel. Anchor dropped as she drifted out of the channel but, that's not going to stop a ship of that size given momentum and proximity to bridge.
Don't have to watch the footage, the ship announced it lost power beforehand in a mayday call. Which saved lives: it allowed them close the bridge so more cars weren't on it.
One question you news folks should be asking the USCG is: Was there a Baltimore pilot aboard? Was a Baltimore pilot required to transit that waterway? Was there any radio traffic sent from the ship that they lost command? Did the ship sound an imminent collision warning on the ship's whistle (to warn those on the bridge)? Has the ship's Captain and/or Pilot been located and detained for interview?
6 people still missing 12 hours after the Bridge collapsed. It's difficult to imagine that anyone in the water or trapped in a vehicle would still be alive after the time that's passed and the temperature of the water. I hope for the families and friends of those still missing that the news is good but its difficult to see how.
I don't wish to sound like a pessimist but with water at 47 degrees, a mangled bridge in the water and time going against the survivors as much as we all want to believe this to be a search and rescue operation, I believe we're in the search and recovery phase! In addition, a major piece of our state's economy has been severely disrupted, but for all the families affected, the people who have grown up with this beautiful bridge, those to have worked to maintain it throughout the years, you're not alone here, being a longtime resident of the state, I know the people of MD will come together to overcome this tragedy!
Not to sound unfeeling at all, but it makes me wonder regardless. They have all been referring to the vessel that hit the bridge as a "ship container". I thought it should have been called a "container ship", or years ago just a freighter. It is a 'ship' designed to carry 'containers', not the other way around. In the meantime, I can't think first here about anything other than the people on the bridge when it collapsed. And most heartfelt condolences and wishes of peace for those who have lost someone dear to them. A tragedy too hard to accept or believe. Blessings.
Sadly, this bridge was built before the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa collapsed from a very similar collision. After that collapse the standards for bridge supports were increased, but only for new bridges. They didn’t go back and retrofit pre-existing bridges because USA doesn’t care about infrastructure until after it fails.
@@eoinburke look up the Sunshine Skyway Bridge supports and compare them to the Francis Scott Key bridge. I’d link you photos but KRplus is weird about that.
All American bridges are unsafe, most of them will colapse due to bad maintenance, structure weakness and construction fails😢 R.I.P all victims, condolences from Brazil.
This point I agree, but there have been documented cases with people that drown, that were brought back long after the drowning occurred, due to the temperature of the water.

I doubt they will find him guilty of anything. The ship lost power when it was in a turn heading for the exit. When the power came back on, the engine started belching black smoke. The ship started drifting sideways, they dropped anchor to try to stop, but the anchor dragged. It looked like they couldn't regain control and the current + the momentum carried them into the bridge.

The ship was cutting a Uturn headed out. Power went out on the ship and huge plume of BLACK SMOKE started to come out of the engine room. When power fails, so does steering. He dropped his anchors, he did all he could.
I hate how the news reports things like this. 7 people in the water 2 were reduced. But there's cars under water and search crews trying to save them. Anyone who was in a car, or went into that water that was not pulled out of the water by 2am is dead. There will be at least 100 people dead from the tragic accident. And shame on the MD Harbor pilot, couldn't even get the boat out of port without destroying a bridge and killing all those innocent people
The Dali is not a particular large container ship, its a very common post panamax class ... a 300m size which is around since the mid 90s. The real issue in this case is that the US simply has outdated infrastructure which for decades hasnt kept up with modern standards and requirements ... like protection of bridge pillars able to withstand/deflect such a common ship type, which does exist for ages. Blame the greed of the US when it comes to infrastructure investments, these ships are not the problem and that disaster could have easily been avoided by keeping up with standards for safety of bridges.
@@diedampfbrasse98 nonsense. These ships fly under foreign flags, are poorly maintained, using cheap foreign labor, and the owners are usually filthy rich who could care less about maintenance and avoid taxes and safety legislation by registering thier floating junk heaps where the marine rules can be flouted.
Seems odd to me that you would design a bridge with the intention for large ships to pass under it, but also design it to collapse like a house of cards when one of those ships hits it?? Yes its an older bridge, but people were not stupid back then... they might have been less afraid of liability verses cheapness though.
INVESTIGATE THE DAMN SHIPPING COMPANY for criminal neglect to properly maintain the ship's system and backup power system, both of which failed. that should NEVER happen. This is no different than Boeing or United Airlines cutting corners on an aircraft
Strange how the ship kept losing power as it was approaching the column dead center. Tinfoil hat aside. What a terrible tragedy. RIP to the victims and their families.😢
At the start of the clip it was actually in the channel fine when it lost power. It drifted straight, it then restarted the engine which looked sick. Ive seen a few captains chime in, seems like the consencus with them is that the pilot put the ship into reverse to ring it to a stop with the engine dying, the prop spin combined with wind swung the bow around and the engine died again before they could fully stop the ship. The sad truth is, if thats what happened, it was the act of trying to stop the ship that doomed the bridge and if they hadnt restored power, we would be talking aout a ship striking fort carroll and getting stuck
Incredibly ignorent comment. If you smack a container ship right into the abutment of a bridge, shits gonna go down. Momentum doesn't care about how new or old something is.
It wasn’t tax cuts that did this… it’s a government that uses its finances poorly like funding endless wars or other peoples wars under the guise of “protecting democracy.”
Tax cuts? Baltimore? No. This sh!t hole has some of the highest taxes in the country. There are bridges built in the first centuries still in use. The key is not to funnel the money to your corporatist buddies and actually maintain the infrastructure.
That ship looks overloaded perhaps stop ordering crap products online reduce these ships shipping one day products. Also time to remove postal subsidies causing cheaper shipping than local mailing of packages
The forward tilt of the boat indicated by the paint line shows the immense weight of the bridge debris. With the current waves and wind, i'm surprised it hasn't shifted.
Really? Why don't you guys just report the news, instead of speculating. In bringing up terrorist all you do is put the idea in more peoples heads. I really get tired of just talking to be talking and woulda coulda shoulda. just report the dang news, actual news.

The Chinese captain hit the base of the bridge. The ship was brought to port without pilots. Where were the pushers? What is the role of the pilot boat? A pilot boat is a type of boat used to pilot between land and ships arriving or leaving port.

The ship lost power and the strong winds moving from right to left pushed it into the bridge apparently , and at least it wasn’t rush hour.

No. No lawsuit. America depends on overseas shipping too much.
Devastating event. Even the 'reporter' is overwhelmed with the "intense waves"
This is absolutely tragic
This is horrific!😢
if you watch the unedited video, it appears the ship lost power before the collision.
Msnbc doesn't show un edited videos.

Probably years before they tell us anything.
Those are questions the NTSB is surely already asking. The idea that the media would have instant access to those answers is wishful thinking.

Container ships just eat into ports when they hit the concrete. I cant imagine any bridge support being able to withstand it.

And shame on the MD Harbor pilot, couldn't even get the boat out of port without destroying a bridge and killing all those innocent people
I was trying to figure out how it was such a low death toll but that makes much more sense
ship called mayday when it lost power, bridge traffic was halted before accident. vehicles on the bridge were maintenance crews fixing pot holes.
Lost power, bellowed black smoke and dropped an anchor trying to avoid. What more do you expect in an emergency situation?
It's just sad how the media make it seem like there are people still alive in the water to be rescued. I hope they can hold their breath for hours.
I cant believe they built a bridge so badly protected from those massive ships...
These container ships are gettin WAY too big.
We have to have our cheap crap from China
stop buying so much stuff then.
@@fulknerra6116 great point.
It's a "container ship" not a "shipping container". That being said it's a tragedy of the first order.
Until the bridge wreckage is removed, all the other boats are trapped in port. And those on the way in are trapped out.

Seems odd to me that you would design a bridge with the intention for large ships to pass under it, but also design it to collapse like a house of cards when one of those ships hits it??
Yes its an older bridge, but people were not stupid back then... they might have been less afraid of liability verses cheapness though.

This much of the bridge collapsed also indicates that it was in extremely bad shape and was destined to collapse with a ship collision.
@@leonskum6864 We know ya'll tried so hard to make it appear accidental. Condolences.
