    I definitely agree that the micro greens taste better. We used to grow them a few years ago and used them in sandwiches and packed lunches, not to mention on fried eggs, scrambled eggs and in omelettes. I’ll have to start growing them again.

    • @cannotbeshaken7889
      @cannotbeshaken7889 년 전 +2

      @@michaelkobulnicky3399 Just like any vegetables Cooking/heating microgreens will kill the nutrients, so it's best to eat them raw. But, no they are not better in cooking, and most people don't cook them. Nice restaurants will place a small amount of raw microgreens on top of meat as a salad, or decoration, or added flavor. I've never seen a restaurant cook them. But at home I know some people put them in stir fry. But there is really no need to cook them, and I'd say most people don't. Most commonly people eat them raw in salads, on top of eggs, on burgers, in sandwiches, pasta, on top of steak, etc...😊

    If you keep the hulls and everything I would argue you could possibly get sprouts to go pretty far since they are not "transplants" until TWO set of true leaves. So you technically you don't need to supply nutrients. MlGardener does microgreens with just coconut coir for that very reason.

    • @connerphillips
      @connerphillips  년 전 +1

      Your completely right, when I did the microgreens I wasn't sure when I was going to harvest them as it was my first time and so I did fertilizer and compost at the bottom. It wasn't necessary as they never even grew true leaves I will have to amend this in future video's. And check out other things I can grow in like coconut coir, Thanks!

    I've tried numerous methods as well and have found jar method lacking in flavor. As your test showed though, I think the basic issue with jar method is lack of nutrients. This works for sprouts but not for microgreens that are close to first real leaf. The longer microgreen got nutrients and so grew more in the same period of time and tasted better. I now grow mine in a NFT channel which has really simplified the whole process. I do cover the first 48hrs after before taking top off to expose to light. Seems to increase number that germinate and agree with your thinking there too, that the young can be easily scorched and never fully sprout by the light. Great comparison that was very informative.

    • @connerphillips
      @connerphillips  년 전

      Thank you! I really appreciate that! I’m going to try doing different sprouts just to see if I enjoy any but I think your right that they are just licking something and it must be nutrition. And although sprouts are easy Microgreens seem harder but you get more out of them and can check them less, and there are no shells to deal with. I’ll have to check out the NFT channel. I think 48 hours sounds like a good amount of time, I was surprised mine was fine 5 days in the dark, and then greened right up. Thank you for your comment, it’s nice to hear what someone else is doing!

    • @hightechfarmers
      @hightechfarmers 년 전 +1

      @@connerphillips Your right, the seed shells in the jar method is problematic. The NFT channel allows me to put in different seed types over the 8' channel. Peas, sunflower, radish (for spicy flavor in some dishes) broccoli and cabbage all in one channel. Due to varying growth rates, they don't all ripen at once so I can take a little of each as needed. Find some fill back in after initial harvest, but not as good as initial crop. And no maintenance from dropping seeds in channel to harvest. I do run a hand to knock seed shells off prior to harvest if any are visible, but otherwise full automated watering and lighting with my NFT system. I have the 4 channel system from Crop King.

      @connerphillips  년 전

      @@hightechfarmers I didn't see this for some reason! I was very interested in this but was having a hard time visualizing it and looking it up. I just checked out Crop King and it makes a lot more sense now! The NFT channel looks like a great system for anyone wanting to get into it consistently and efficiently. Thank you for following up!

    • @hightechfarmers
      @hightechfarmers 년 전 +3

      @@connerphillips and others reading this. Yes the NFT channel uses a hydroponic method called Nutrient Film Technique that just means a thin film of nutrient rich water flows down the inclined channel. There is a fabric roll you can get from CropKing as well that you cut to fit the channel. Then the fabric naturally moistens due to flowing water in NFT channel that is 8' long. I pour loose seed in about 6-8 sections of various different seed types. This provides 4" x 12-18" seed bed for each variety. I then cover for two days with standard cover and cover that with towels since there are holes in the cover. Take off towel and cover after two days. Allow to grow for 5-12 days approx. depending on the varieties of seeds. Harvest as each variety gets to desired maturity. I use a knife to cut just above the channel edge and grab about 3-4" at a time to drop into a container. Easiest I've had getting good germination across the board. I do use the other 3 channels in the system for spinach and lettuce primarily. Provides a great salad with lettuce, spinach, mixed microgreens.

    Hi Mate, where do you live?! Roughy obviously, cos outside looks smashing, looks like really deep snow and a wood, we (in Middlesbrough TS54DT UK), don't get deep snow anymore, if you look us up on street view youll see my house and the area, it is pretty over populated and run down, my boys LOVE to see videos of places that have lots of the white stuff. Btw, I've been sprouting for years but I'll give the micro greens a try now, normally Emma just adds ours to olive oil and balsamic vinegar then into a salad. Thanks for taking the time to make a video. Regards Gary Gray and family. UK. Glory to Ukraine. Got to put that as I'm just back from the front myself 🇺🇦😬.

      Hello, thank you! I live in north western Montana, so lots of snow! I’ve been loving the snow only it keeps getting warm here and then the snow turns into a muddy mess. Interesting spot, looks like you have a river and are close to the ocean, that must be nice! We don’t have many neighbors here which we like. Good to know salad combination, I will have to try it out with sprouts and see if I enjoy it more. I’m going to be trying 4 different sprout seeds this month to see if I like any more then the broccoli ones. Do you have a favorite seed that you sprout? Best of wishes to you and your family.

    Hello, I've never grown sprouts before and like the tin tray growing method, since you commented the flavour is tastier. Wondering what happens after you've harvested the first sprouts? Do you pull up and discard the remaining ends then grow your next crop or do they regrow and shoot again?

    • @connerphillips
      @connerphillips  년 전 +2

      Hello, Great question. You won’t get a second harvest from it unless some seeds came up later. The growth of roots are pretty dense so you wouldn’t want to directly plant more in the same tin. You could dump it into a compost or put them in a bucket make sure they dry out and the roots should compost quickly. But then I would watch for mold growth or any sort of insects if you are reusing. For the most part I would suggest composting the soil and starting over.
      Then depending on how much you want you could start a new tin every 2 days or ever 4 days so that you constantly have fresh sprouts. Thank you for your question!

  • @NeverFollowTheCrowd

    Subscribed cool channel ! How much would it cost for a full set up of sprouts 🌱?

    • @connerphillips
      @connerphillips  년 전 +1

      Thank you! You can get a kit on Amazon for $25 that comes with two jars, straining lids, and even the holders that keep them at an angle. If you went in store and gathered stuff separately it would be quite a bit cheaper then that.
      Then seeds are $10-$20 per pound depending on the seeds and that would last quite awhile.
      I’ll have to put that in my next sprout video, thanks!

    Microgreens do NOT have to be cooked (obviously) but sprouting seeds MUST be cooked when harvested because of the bacteria present. 0:11 Maybe that had something to do with the taste ? From UK at 9th March 2023. 20:32

      Interesting, I have had sprouts in salads many times now without a problem. I know that if they are slimy then they are not good to eat. I had I had one I was nervous about and not even the chickens would eat it.
      I looked online and saw a lot of people saying different things from you must cook sprouts to others saying you don’t. But it does look like it increases chances of bad growth with sprouts over microgreens.
      Although I did see some research saying that steaming sprouts can increase absorption. Thanks for the comment.

  • @michaelkobulnicky3399

    Does each have different uses? Is one better for universal uses?

    • @connerphillips
      @connerphillips  년 전 +1

      I would say microgreens are probably more versatile. Sprouts tend to have a lot of moisture, are smaller and clump together. But really I think it’s down to preference. I recently had someone comment your supposed to steam sprouts so that would definitely make microgreens more versatile if your doing that.
