I think it is part, maybe crucial, to who he is and how successful he has been at comedy. It's because he tells his jokes like it's a story and it makes you feel like he known you for a long time and comfortable.

I had a friend growing up in the Bronx named Jerome. He was our street corner entertainment. The guy was naturally hilarious. There was just something about his mannerisms and the way he spoke that had us bending over in tears laughing at the crazy stuff that came out his mouth. I think some people just have the gift. That doesn't mean you don't have to work at it but some people have the comic genius gene.

Of course she didn't help him create his material he never said that but Dave Chapelle said in his other shows how much a great support she was. She saw how much he enjoyed comedy and encouraged him at a young age to go after his dreams.
*EDIT* It was brought to my attention that Dave's dad was a great dad. I haven't seen Dave talk about him but, It was wrong of me to assume that even if he didn't talk about him that he didn't play a positive role in his life.

@@courthogan3140 Dave came from a highly educated family and line of lineage. Both his parents did a great job raising him. Look up most of his comedy in Netflix special, he often talked about his family and how greatly they influenced him.
Dave is definitely on my mt. Rushmore of comedy. He's a national treasure in my opinion . I'm very happy to see him getting the respect and reverence he deserves.
