I love how people raise dogs that are bred for friendliness, teach them to be sweet, and are surprised when they aren't instinctually driven to be attack dogs. I would be more inclined to protect my dog than expect him to protect me.
Exactly! I have a golden retriever who’s in the process of being trained to be my service dog. He cannot stand someone yelling in the mere VICINITY of him, so I can’t imagine he’d be much help in a home invasion environment (his name is Harvey if anyone is interested).

Yeah. My dog was born a stray and was never properly socialized. I have no doubts he would protect me, but only because he's so untrusting of everyone, and is very quick to snarl when he feels threatened.

No one in the comments has mentioned that at 5:10 the pit bull mix starts to come to his defense, but he yells "GET HIM" and the dog reacts like he angrily yelled "GET DOWN" off the couch. If he hadn't yelled that at his dog, I think his dog would have gotten braver and tried to back the attacker away from the couch.
Yeah. I also think dogs are smart enough to tell when someone is truly a threat. These dogs are reacting to exactly what's happening: everyone is yelling and it makes them uncomfortable. Except for the little guys who're like "Oh, are we all yelling in here? Rad."

The dog is aggressively moving towards the stranger, on their way to hurt them, and their owner is yelling angrily at them...!
Now, I'm assuming that every other time a stranger has been in the house, and the dog has moved aggressively towards them, the owner started angrily yelling directions, it was to STOP what the dog was doing.
Kind of like how if a dog's only experience with the couch in their home is "I am on couch and owner is silent" or "owner is unhappy with me and I must get off of couch"... then the dog has it cemented in their mind that if they're on the couch.
I mean, just in general, normal dogs are usually ordered to stop doing something, when it's an unhappy tone.
Which is just one reason why special training for guard dogs and any dog who has to perform a job that requires the dog to take the lead, in many ways.
I mean, training a dog to physically attack someone is a huge freaking deal. Especially when they're going to be around people & animals who they shouldn't attack.
In the majority of situations where...
- The owner is angry about what's going on and expressing distress.
- The owner clearly wants the situation to end.
- During this situation, the dog is aggressively attacking someone.
It has to be especially confusing for dogs, because they know when animals are attacking them, but it's much harder to know what humans pose a threat to their human - until they're physically brawling, but the whole point is the dog preventing that from happening.
Their human is on the defensive, but the dog needs to take the lead and go on the offensive...attacking the human who poses a threat to the human, but usually runs from the dog...ultimately behaving the same way, the same reaction, as a completely innocent stranger who the dog isn't supposed to attack.
It's so fucking dangerous to establish that the dog will be rewarded for chasing down this "guilty" human and brutally attacking them...I would choose being tazed over a dog bite any day. Dogs trained like police dogs are fucking terrifying in action.
And if you ever watch videos of people working with guard dogs actually trained to do the job (the job this TV station expects random dogs to do)...the command people use is spoken as clearly & calmly as any other command.
They do NOT start hysterically screaming and wailing and pointing...as if their family dog can somehow decipher that and then magically know that for the first time ever, their owner wants them to ignore any practiced commands, ignore all prior experience, ignore all established rules...and literally kill the human.
Yeah, let's encourage our untrained dogs to attack strangers, and pretend like the dog knows that this specific stranger had special gear on that protected them from the dog's attack...gear the dog has never encountered and likely will never again in their natural life.
Show the dog that actually, human skin is a lot tougher than they previously thought! They bit down on this man's arm with full force and he didn't even bleed or anything...🤔

Most high risk breeds are the onr with a cuddly public image. Cuz people see them and forget these used to be predators. Most were bred for the hunt. And most who get one, get them from either puppy mills or "purebreds", aka severely inbred and selected for health defects. And then continue to not train them, not exercise them, not entertain them.
So they end up with an animal in constant pain, severely depressed and constantly dealing with hairless chimps who can't make up their mind what they want from them.
Not surprising they lash out once in a while.
Whenever this topic comes up, I always think of Cesar Milan: the guy walks into the den of a rottie who has only let one other in there for the last 5 years. And can give it scritches and has a new lapdog. But his default position on chihuahuas is "don't trust it, get it away from me!".
I see a lapdog yipping near my 2yr old, (somehow those things are never leashed, which is a specific annoyance for me) the damned thing better hope it's out of reach, cuz I tend to walk with a hiking stick. I see a rottie or pittmix flopping about, my first and often only response is "awh! Look at the happy puppy! He's so happy cuz he thinks you might wanna play with him!" .
So nah, I'd rank labs and retrievers and such much lower on the adorable and trudt scales.

On the show To Catch a Thief the guys who hosted that show said thinking a dog is a deterent is a mistake. Unless you specifically breed a dog to be aggressive( which can be useful) it is not born that WAY. They showed them literally being nice to a dog or giving it a treat and the dog was like chill.
I remember one episode of that show, the family had a really sweet and friendly golden retriever. When the host did the fake robbery, he just loaded the happy dog up, too, and drove off with him.

Usually people train their dog to be friendly and not attack everyone who walks through the door. There is also a difference between a bark and literally attack someone. A year ago my uncle was walking his dog, guy tried to attack him and my uncles dog BARKED did just fine scared the guy away. My uncle didn't expect her to pull out a gun and start shooting the guy
I saw someone get shot one night when I was walking my dog and I got so scared I took off with her and tbh I was more afraid that she was going to be hurt than I was. I thought, "she's little, and I'm big, so it's more likely that I could survive a gunshot than her". I also was thinking that in movies the "bad guys" always hurt someone's kid or pet. I was not expecting her to protect me in any way. (Nothing else happened, I ran home and called 911 and the cops came).

Pitties aren’t aggressive unless they are trained to be or needed to be in order to survive, yes they are one of the most “dangerous” dogs but they rarely attack people, smaller dog breeds are more aggressive than pitties and CAN inflict damage on humans in fact all dogs can harm a person no matter the breed it matters on how they were raised.

Low-key my dog being super overprotective, she gets annoyed even when people put mail through the letter box, so she would probably kill someone.
I think these dogs KNOW this man means no harm, which is why they're getting so confused and feel okay to leave. There's screaming and a whole show but the intent just isn't there. They know their owners are fine.

Whenever you look up death by dog and hospitalization from dog bites, pitbulls make up the INSANELY HIGH majority. HOWEVER that doesn’t make them bad dogs, people just absolutely need to be better equipped when taking care of big dogs. If you want to have a pitbull you can still have a loving dog, but you need to take care of it the proper and responsible way or else it might be prone to aggression and, due to it’s breeding, cause injuries since it’s a great deal more powerful than other breeds.

The dog of a friend of mine is the most lovely and friendly dog imaginable, but when my friend once came home from a walk with her and found some sketchy looking dudes looking into her windows, the dog went straight into attack mode. I think dogs can really sense whether you are actually afraid or not. Maybe thats why this didnt work
When I was younger, we had two Great Danes. One time (my mom told me this story), but two guys were outside my bedroom and when my dog kept scratching the backdoor, my mom let her out because she thought she had to go pee. She darted to our bedroom window and scared off the two dudes. She was 4, a sweetheart, and had really good senses (she was deaf)

I can't believe no one else has mentioned this but there's no way to know for sure if these dogs would actually defend their owners in these situations, dogs can read human intentions sometimes better than we can, and they can clearly see their owners aren't in any real danger.

Ive always said that little dogs are naturally more aggressive. You get two dogs, a small one and a big one so the small one will urge the big one to atrack the intruder with them. Unless you actually train your dogs to attack. Like, with a command. Then you dont need to get a small dog.
i know this comment is teo years old but this is mostly because small dogs are:
1. often terriers who were bred to hunt and have a high prey drive that doesn't get worked on (bc dogs are often not exercised enough)
2. not trained or socialized as well because they're not seen as a threat like bigger dogs
3. disrespected by their owners. small dogs often have their boundaries disregarded because it's "cute". think about the "owa owa" trend. people would ignore the many warnings their chihuahuas gave them before attacking the microphones
tldr: little dogs are only considered "more aggressive" because they're not properly trained and their boundaries are ignored
