As someone who worked in radio for 5 years, I can tell you that 95% of weird calls you hear on the radio are fake. I have played several characters on air for my fellow co-workers and they tell me what to say and how to act. Calls are saved and reused by several DJ's and they even have prep sites where audio is provided for weird calls and then the on air host just fills in conversation.

What are some of the jobs there? I know that there’s a host, but I want to have a character that works more behind the scenes (like a sound guy I guess??). Thank you if you decide to respond lol

Usually you have the owner (who is usually either super involved or not at all), the station manager, production director (they are who handle like all the sounders and prod), The PD (Who is in charge of individual stations), then you have the hosts usually afternoons nights and morning show host (sometimes the pd and prod director intertwine with morning show hosts and other hosts), the you have the engineers (who fix stuff), behind the scenes you have the traffic director, sales reps, the front desk attendant. yea i live in Chicago so i hear this shit every morning when i was heading to school. they do more stuff but this is what they do the most. the rest isn’t much. now that i think about it, Angie doesn’t really do much but idk could just be me not listening to the whole thing so don’t @ me on dat lol. don’t wanna get slapped by legal. Fred is the more fun out of the two but thats just my opinion.

ahahahhhahaha same i would never feel comfortable doing that with someone i just met! knowing myself i would have made up some lie if i absolutely needed to go pick up in the middle of our date. but the funniest thing happened to me once... so one guy i went on a date with while i was using was named Antonio and then after our date ended i was trying to pick up but all my connects were either MIA or unavailable so i went on craigslist - as you do - and found a guy who claimed his name was "J.P" so i hit him up and he agreed to meet up with me and i get to the spot and it turned out to be Antonio lmao!!! i was like oh shit wtf. we were both incredibly weirded out but thought it was funny at the time. apparently he was using a textnow number and fake name, but uhhh he became one of my alternate plugs after that and we sort of dated for a while at the same time too. so fkn random n insane!

There is a show just like this in my area and there’s one called “roses” where they try to catch cheaters and I have literally thought the exact same thing “who would answer these random ass numbers on the first dial, this has to be fake”

"War of the roses" in San Diego is the worst. Person who thinks their partner is cheating on them calls in, then the radio station calls the cheater, offering them roses to send to who ever they want, but they need a name and a message for the card. When the name on the card doesn't match the person calling in, the DJs start berating the cheater. It's terrible.

Believe it or not, there are some colleges where the Drug Dealer 101 courses don't cover time management. A friend of mine went to a brick-and-mortar university where they didn't even have time to explain why you don't book a date at the same time as a drug deal!
If you really want to get ahead in the field, you gotta enroll in a trade school. You can't let yourself get bogged down with general-education requirements when you're trying to perfect your craft.

Also i live in a different country, but a comedy radio show i adored (no longer being done, rip Pentagruel) had multiple segments but followed a top-10 type of thing that had absolutely ridiculous themes (that were actually researched). I'm only mentioning this much info because they will use music/film clips to indicate the number they're at, and once used the FUCKING GERMAN NARUTO OPENING (yes, the "Believe it" one) for number 9.
Anyway they had a crank call segment sometimes and they never told them they were on the radio. I guess the laws are different.

My boyfriend does this on occasion. Station will call him up and give him the premise of the character he needs to play, and he’ll stay on the line and wait for his cue and then deliver whatever weird story they ask him to. He makes a decent amount per call and it takes so little time to do that there really isn’t much of a downside to it. Shit is very fake but hey! I guess it’s entertaining

There is a similar show that I listen to in my area and its called the Jubile show. One of the segments is "First date followup" which is basically "Waiting on a phone" and the other one is called "War of the Roses" where somebody's partner suspects the other partner of cheating.
I have this on my radio, and my bus driver plays it while he's driving us to school. Everyone finds the reasons why they are ghosting so weird. And everyone just sits in silence every time it comes on.

I catch episodes of this occasionally on my drive to work. Favorite one so far has been where a girl was accused of eating Cheetos weird. When explaining what was weird about the way she ate them the guy said she literally held them in her mouth and let all the cheese soak off before putting them back in the bag. I legitimately produced this exact bit for a station in Edmonton called Second Date Update. I wrote the scripts, and we got 2 actors from an agency every week. You're not crazy, and I hated the bit.
Was it part of the job to make the scripts insanely ridiculous? It's one thing to script a bit or running gag but can't these stations be bothered to make it a tad bit more realistic?

there's a radio show pretty similar to this, it's called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Except they do actual prank phone calls, and people call in and give people's phone numbers THAT THEY KNOW, so it's just not random people. They also do second date updates but I think they're fake, but it's still quite fun to listen to!
Edit: They also have a "Loser Line" (the stories so far have been 100% fake) that people can give other people they find creepy, so they can play the weird voicemails on the air, and they also have an anonymous confession line where you can confess anything anonymously, it's called "the masked speaker", it can get pretty weird lol

We have a show like this in Ottawa and a couple weeks ago I heard a gem. This dude follows a girl home after their date at the animal shelter and then calls the radio show a week later to tell them he was ghosted. The girl was on vacation, thats why she didn't call. Now buddy is having to explain why he stalked her but somehow he recovers and manages to get a second date.

there’s another kiss fm show that’s exactly this, the jubal show. it’s called “first date follow up”. it’s in Austin Tx. so this guy brings this girl to a restaurant that his friend owns. he says it went great, but when she answers, she says that he would brag about his friend owning the restaurant around like 20 times. and at the end, he asks if he can promote the restaurant. it was pretty weird, but my mom and i only listened to that radio show during the mornings bc the other radios were lamer than that one.

Radio people are freaked out by unknown numbers calling them so they hide the contact details and use actors, it's an anxiety thing. Danny's call had them startled like deers in headlights, it was the longest 3 minutes of their lives.

Ever since this video came out, I was super confused because there's a similar show where I live. It's hosts are Simon and Angi, and I was really confused because it was not drug-dealy shock-esk, and they gave out their number.
It was at midnight where I am, and I loved listening to it because it kept me entertained when trying to sleep.

He messaged her with a nice-guy message saying something like “WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME” and then she responded by saying that she talked to his friends and found out that the man was not allowed within 1 mile of a zoo for the same reason sex-offenders are not allowed near schools.

I worked in Radio for years and a lot of times, shows like this are staged because it would be a nightmare logistically to arrange. Some channels do real shows but some are like this and staged
