I'm here from Howie Mandel's appearance on Hangin' with Doctor Z and he mentions this, although differently. I didn't think it was bad. And his bit with the animal reminds me of Will Ferrell's appearance on Conan with the bird.
Can't tell if Howie's appearance on Hangin' with Doctor Z was supposed to be purposely flat, awkward, and all around bad or if Howie is just that unfunny.

@@dhpbear2 I think Howie Mandel remembered his time incorrectly, even if it was so disastrous as it would be worth forgetting. Carson didn't seem that brutal as he was trying to understand him. Hear me out on this but I'm not someone who watches Howie Mandel, but from what I judge, and I'm not knocking his talent, his kind of comedy is very dangerous, in terms of the ppl being able to get the jokes or not, because you really needed to think outside of the box. It sounded like Carson had an off night, but unfortunately, it looked like Carson was sort of anxious as well (8:43). He always liked the control he brought on the audience, and this is him out of it, and the whole last minute thing is bombing. Could be little frustration there even if its in relation to the joke, "If you folks had spent 12.50, you'd have a right to boo," then you hear the band go off, then Carson looks frustrated, "Another one!" Wonder if its outta context though.
I heard the Mandel interview. They said they had nobody else but him. Okay. What about Super Dave or Jonathan Winters? I heard these were guys that were on stand by. But ig they were not available. I'm just a 27 yr old but I would have loved to have seen two guys just talk about the old days of NBC in New York and tales about Groucho or George Jessel; however one thing I have noticed as the 80s came in, the excitement was perhaps more valued. Notice how that was becoming true as time progressed into the 90s and 2000s. Carson was certainly a competitive person and would have wanted to keep up with everything.
Also because he was a last minute guest I really don’t think Johnny Carson would hold this routine against him Howie either got banned for something else or never was banned.

Johnny just didn't understand the joke. I doubt he really cared one way or the other, but Fred DeCordova likely was the one who decided to only have Howie on with guest hosts. The nipple thing didn't help either.
He explained this on a podcast, they called him last minute to come in, he told them I have zero material, I can't come in, they begged him, this is what he came up with in 30 minutes, Johnny is not loyal, and wouldn't let this slide, my guess is they didnt tell Johnny after the show, and just left Howie out to dry, many people didn't like johnny, who admitted it many years later when the fear passed, ask RIP Joan Rivers

Normally, he would bail out a guest with a joke or a laugh (whether real or otherwise) if things weren't going well, but he spends most of the time meeting Howie's jokes with a blank face or almost no comment at all.
