I really liked the scene when Danny is about to die in the fire, and the ghost of her mom appears to be with him in his final moments. In a previous scene Danny mentioned how when his mother was close to dying her face got so covered in flies that he couldn't bring himself to look at her to comfort her. But in the end, he can finally see her face, and she comforts him.

Also I think it's also mentioned how Wendy could never look Danny in the eyes because she saw Jack in his face. So Wendy could never look Danny in the eyes as he was growing up and Danny could never look Wendy in the eyes as she grew old and died. So when Danny is dying and they're looking at each other, they can finally look each other in the eyes
It also shows how a mother's love is unconditional and everlasting, because unconditional love through horror and trauma is something that King himself always tries to put in his books.

@@iappsforipod Correct, they really wanted to make a sequel to the film The Shining not the book but its still good either way. Doctor Sleep was like their acknowledgement to Stephen King for 'messing up' his work in the first place because King did not like what Kubrick did to his book at all which is why they killed off Danny the way Jack should have died in the first film and its the whole thing, not just a fiery explosion but corpse possession too
There sure is a lot more character deaths in the film than the book

That scene is hard to watch. I think especially if you have kids yourself, which I do. That shit hit me hard. The sad part is that type of stuff and worse happens for real everyday. You don't fuck with kids bro.
You know, seeing adults being killed in movies is so common, but seeing a child dying, who's parents are most likely going to never recover from that and say its their fault forever, is very sad, and just makes people want to crank the guts out of the people who did this with a meat ginder. Amazing job from Jacob.

Not just kids dying. If it was a slasher and someone just decapitated a kid in a horror movie, it'd be fine with me. It's how long and drawn out it I'd. The kid begging for his life as he's violently drained of life. That's what's disturbing
Having a child walk home alone in a remote area in this day and age is just asking for trouble. I was a bit pissed at his parents that they didn’t arrange a ride with one of his teammates or something.
The baseball boy scene is gut-wrenching. I've never watched the entire movie. I didn't know about the baby. I'm glad you didn't linger on it too long.

That scene where Jacob Tremblay’s character gets killed is maybe the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a movie theater. Gotta give the kid some major acting credit though. It feels very real.

Fun fact: The way Abra uses her shine is the same as Emerald's semblance in RWBY as I remember. I think that's neat with the fact that her actor loves the show.

I loved it it’s such a change and makes it better since they always go for this cliche this won’t hurt a bit like you said but that is so good
Danny's death scene made immediately burst into tears the second his mom's ghost came on screen. It's that feeling of "why the hecc am I crying, this isn't that sad." But it is. The only thing they could've done better is also include jack torrance, since he wasn't bad if a person, just overridden by the hotel and his past.
in the book jack helps defeat rose at the campground and does just that
I was tearing up as well! It’s a beautiful moment where Danny gets to say goodbye to his mom in a way they both deserve.
It’s especially nice because Danny was just seeing evil entities so it’s nice he also got someone special to him.
This scene resonates because. Like King said, “there is no true horror with out also having hope.”
I like the little references to things they cut out, like Abra calling Dan Uncle Dan. In the book Abra’s mom is Dan’s half-sister from an affair Jack had, so he’s literally her uncle in the book.
They didn´t even make them family? What the hel... Now I definitely know that I will never watch... whatever is this.

Easily one of the most satisfying villain deaths in my opinion.
I also loved the risk that came along with it and the fact that Danny doesnt just get away scott free from it by running away while they're distracted. Like, he knew what would happen if he released his ghosts and that's what happened.
It was really a satisfying villain death, I like that they included most of the ghosts from the movie even though in the book there is only two.
And to top it off she died in a similar painful way she killed the baseball kid, true karma.
Mike Flanagan deserves praise for many things, but one thing he needs more credit for is how well he directs kids. It's no coincidence all the children in his movies give good performances, though plenty of credit goes to them too. Communicating complex, emotional, and often frightening concepts to children is a special talent that not a lot of directors have, regardless of how talented they are in other areas. The fact that he's the common denominator between these good performances point to this special ability.

Insanely enough, he didn't even direct Jacob Tremblay. Jacob showed up, Flanagan asked him if he wanted to run through it, but Jacob had been rehearsing at home and said no he just wanted to do it. Everything about Jacob's scene was entirely his own creation, and Flanagan had very little to do with it other than asking Jacob if he wanted to be in the film.
@@SkylerDeWitt Thats awesome! I still wanna point out how many directors would trust a kid like that? Flanagan has a way with directing kids and part of that is trusting them and giving them space to play, not micromanaging their performances. Jacob needs to continue in acting for sure

@@ashrose4979 I agree. Tremblay was a hot commodity at the time. Directors wanted him because he was a great actor. Flanagan reached out on a whim, Tremblay said yes because The Shining was his favorite movie, and Tremblay said, "I know what I'm going to do, it's going to be really scary!" Flanagan was like "Yeah, okay." Then Tremblay showed up to a job that he was overqualified for, traumatized everyone, then left waving and saying, "Thanks guys, that was fun!!" I really think 99% of the credit belongs to Tremblay.
Alex did a fantastic job playing Wendy, she had her mannerisms and even looked very much like original wendy in flashback scenes.
Jacob Tremblay was really outstanding in his small role. He made me feel so bad for his character, scared, and disturbed. He should've got golden chainsaw just for his performance.

The actors being worried and shaken up by the kid makes me think of the scene where Pennywise's Actor (Bill Skarsgård) was scaring a kid and kept asking if they were okay afterwards. A few of the actors (I wanna say Fin Wolfhard) talked about it in an interview. Just reminds me how amazing these actors are as people, and how great they are as Actors, acting ruthless when it's not their true nature.
Billy's death was so tragic. The coolest dude in the whole movie, got ratioed by snakebite telling him to kill himself, and then him proceeding to do so

I love how Rose's arrogance is shown glaringly throughout. From her not wanting anyone more powerful than her, to almost each line. Once her flock is killed, she can easily survive for many more years off the leftover shine, but her arrogance/weakness ultimately ends up being her downfall as she continues to chase after such a stronger opponent.
Oh Rose thought she was bad mofo, that hat was too tight on her head 😅. If she would have played it smart, bid her time for a perfect attack.

Danny had the high ground
She really shouldn't have picked a fight with the two most powerful Shine users alive at that time. The only reason Dan initially lost and had to open the cases is because she literally doped herself up beforehand.

The scene of the lady and her baby is so unnerving and horrifying. Like… Danny was probably sleeping next to a dead woman and then her baby ends up starving to death. That scene always makes me extremely sad, especially when she said that they (as in police or neighbors) hadn’t found them yet. Also the scene where the little baseball boy gets killed. His screams are so horrifying. Honestly love this movie so much
The Shining was the first horror movie I watched, and it was with my father. This franchise means so much to me, and I want to thank you for bringing me back to my childhood with The Shining and Doctor Sleep Kill Counts. I remember asking you to do The Shining KIll Count back at 2019 Monsterpalooza, and you gave such a polite response. I love the channel and will always be a member. Thank you so very much James! I’m not gonna lie, that scene of the kid being cut open for his steam was one of the few times a movie genuinely made me scared of the villain
Agreed. Because of that, I really loved seeing Rose get her comeuppance at the end.
That scene alone is one of the reasons I've hesitated buying the film. The movie is fantastic, but having a son myself, it was easily the most uncomfortable thing I've seen in a long, long time. Despite how well it was acted, I'm not sure I could sit through it again.

Imagine being professional actors who spend their whole lives practicing their craft and then getting SHOOK by the scene you're filming. If that doesn't tell you how good Mike is at his job then I don't know what will. Props to the kid too for his work. I felt soooooooooo bad for him during that scene.

Kyliegh Curran played Abra AND Danny and managed to make it work, and Jacob Tremblay was an absolute trooper being able to scream and cry that convincingly.
Couldn’t finish the film the first time because of his scene, it was too depressing and almost realistic in a way.
I shed a tear for future Oscar winner Jacob Tremblay when he died in this kill count. I saw this movie in theaters and I've watched both the theatrical and director's cut of the film on Blu-Ray. Jacob is just that brilliant an actor. Massive props to Mike Flanagan and Rose Ferguson as well.

It was good, but I much like the book version of the ending better, minus the fact that it didn't happen at the Overlook Hotel. Or at the very least, the fact that Jack Torrance helps his son in the fight. I'd have liked that in the film.
That boy crying as he was getting tortured and killed looked so real I wonder if people had questions after that.

I think Flanagan missed an opportunity though.
I remember seeing this in the theatres and after hearing "we go on" at the end, and feeling like the line should have been "there are other worlds than these". This would give a nod to King's universe and a better understanding where Danny may have possibly gone after his death.

I am honestly surprised Danny Lloyd made an appearance at all, though I am glad he did. He was my biology professor in college in my first trimester and he made it very clear that you were to never mention The Shining in his room or you would be kicked out for the entire trimester. He was a really cool dude that was pretty laid back, but he never wanted to talk about his time in the The Shining. Good on him for making the cameo and I hope he had a good time doing it!

Mike Flanagan is honestly my favorite horror director/writer rn. Everything hes done has given me the full spectrum of emotions. And don't get me started on his attention to detail and ability to build tension

It's easy to force yourself to scream in horror films
But it's even harder to force yourself to cry
Idk if it makes it any easier for anyone else, but if I wanna fake cry to screw with my friends/family, the easiest and most convincing way for me to do it is to try and "open" my nostrils, and focus more on snot, spit, and just gross sobbing crying lol
It looks way more pathetic(and would ruin most movies lol), but it's funny as hell and seems to be the best way to irritated my eye-ducts without actually touching them with my hands.
@@mutt9779 damn I just consciously irritate my eyes (without you touching my face) and I start to cry, initially I had to think of bad memories and sad moments, but using that would be better if you want to full on cry and yell, which isn’t that good. So I just irritate my eyes to cry instead, and I force snot to come out ( I practiced it for months to do it), change my voice to sound exactly how I do when I cry and stutter to get the perfect crying.

The kidnapping of bradley is a serious problem if you think about it(A random van drives up and the person driving the van, or a person that's in the van along with the driver...and they do say things like "I can offer you a ride" or other things and kids can sometimes make a mistake and go into the van and never be seen again
That child put on a hell of a performance, good enough that I literally couldn't watch it and had to sit it out for a bit.
Gotta give props for the most viscerally disturbing scene in any film I've watched by far.

I’ve seen it when I saw it in theaters and nice detail. The reason this happens is because Danny’s eyes r blue and his obviously talking through her body.
I still owe James for his ‘The Shining’ kill count. My buddies asked me if I wanted to go see Doctor Sleep and I told them yes, but I had never watched The Shining. Came here to watch the kill count and to at least know what was going on. Went to see Doctor Sleep and it was one of my favorite movies in a long time.
Watched this video again and man....."He....he understands". That's gotta be one of the most satisfying thing to hear from the legend Stephen King. That one line is enough to make the whole movie pay off. That alone would mean the world to me.
I'm sure it's partially because of how attached to this movie on its own he was, but no matter how many times I watch this one I'm always impressed by the restraint that must have gone into only having a handful of Star Wars jokes in a movie starring Ewan McGregor, knowing how big of a star wars guy James is

there's something so pleasing that gets me so giddy when i see movies based/shot/partially filmed in my state since I never see it that often
Went on a trip to Colorado and I have to say, we drove six hours out of our way just to see and step inside the Stanley hotel, and even without the haunted/horror context it was well worth the trip. It is absolutely majestic, and I’d love to spend the night there someday.
I remember reading a piece talking about Jacob Trembley’s work on this movie and how he put his all into it and then when the scene was over, popped up and walked over to craft services while all the adults were wracked with trauma. So if you watch this and feel bad, just remember that he had a fun time and second after they finished, he was eating a cookie or something.
I totally believe it, his performance in Room absolutely devastated me.

The kid who played Danny in the original Shining apparently didn’t even realize he was filming a horror movie.
And if it makes you feel even better he was the voice of Luca in Pixar's Luca and Flounder in Little Mermaid!
Apparently the day they filmed that scene it was actually his birthday, and they had a red velvet cake ready for him off screen.
Fun fact: The figurine on Abra’s nightstand is the character Emerald from the internet show RWBY. She has the ability to make people see things and read their thoughts. Abra’s actress is apparently a fan of the show. Just thought it was interesting.

I like how they specifically chose Emerald from RWBY for Abra to be a fan of. Not only is Abra's actor Kyleigh Curran a fan of RWBY in general, but they look alike (both young black females), and Emerald's specific power is the ability to generate illusions in other people's minds just like Abra can. Plus they both fight people with the name "Rose".

@@joniwaly2293 In a way it makes sense not having a clear definition of what the shining is, magic is not science so rather than a detailed, deductive knowledge about the shining we only know about it through the inductives we make up and learn about from the characters. Stephen King might not be sure about what the shining is but its not like it detracts from the whole fantasy of his books.

Second time watching this Kill Count and its getting close to being one of my all time favorites. It's even better after watching The Shining Kill Count. What really gets me is how Stephen King clearly loves this movie too. I think it must be an amazing feeling to see someone else understand your own art so well, and to do it such justice.
I have really wanted Kings reaction to Midnight Mass. It was so obviously an homage, but phenomenal in its own right.

That's exactly what blew me away about the film. It managed to bridge the gap between King's novels and the Kubrick film in a way that felt organic to the story. It's a fantastic film, Mike Flanigan knocked it out of the park!
I’m not even done reading The Shining, and I can already understand why the movie version of Jack would upset King. Any nuance is obliterated in favor of just making him angry and creepy from the start in Kubrick’s film.
@Avery Hughes that's exactly why I don't like the movie. It's much less compelling to see someone who is clearly already an asshole turn violent than seeing someone trying so hard to over come their demons lose that battle.
