@@rabbitslayer42 Yes, but one born out of feeling guilty every time they do a horror-adjacent episode and finally just having to justify to themselves. It’s a non-apology that’s the result of all their previous, sincere apologies.
Funny thing is, they… don’t need to apologize. Most of us don’t care if what they talk about is “on topic”; just as long as we can hear ‘em talking.

For me the scenes with the Lord and Lady in the castle were extremely suspenseful, because it reminded me of stories of heroes spending too long in the Faerie Realms. The castle has a very large Library, extremely rare in the Middle Ages outside of a monastery, there's a beautiful woman who looks exactly like his lover back home, all temptations. The talk of rot and decay to me suggests the fact that no one in this house is human as they don't age, and that time maybe moves differently here so that he misses his appointment at Christmas Day.

Idk if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the "jittering" effect Chelsea is talking about when the camera spins to show how Gawain could have died is a time lapse effect. If you look closely you'll see moss and flowers grow and shrink as the camera passes....at least I think that's the case 😅

So, Arthur does go "ah, yes, kill our boi" but no one thinks "ah, yes, use the other weapon, that holly branch, and just bap him across the noggin". XD

That thing about James just instinctively *needing* a strict canon and being driven away by ambiguity goes a long way towards explaining why so much of geek culture is the way it is, and some arguments I've had online that have been *baffling* until now. The idea of that just being a way a person could be wired - despite strict canons being much rarer in the world than ambiguity - is a thing I had gone through twenty six years without recognizing.

One of the the things that got me interested about Greek Mythology books from Scholastic is that the spine had non fiction written on them. Dev Patel has come a long way since the tv show Skins. Loved the way they presented a Camelot that was realistic with a sense of faded glory. The way it presented his trials was interesting because he really did feel like an everyman with the potential of greatness thrust upon him. The version of the story I knew was a bit more chaste but the parts they modernized work for the story they were tell and there is a lot left to the viewers interpretation. The removing of the girdle and the head falling off made we think of Tales For The Midnight Hour. Great work as usual y'all and looking forward to the review of the new movie next week. B~)

    1. This movie reminded me so much of films like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and SILENCE; movies where people struggle with their flaws and being human whilst also trying to live up to impossible ideals. There is a part of me that likes to headcanon that the Green Knight did chop Gawain's head off right after the movie ended (although I think a happy ending makes more sense narratively, especially since the "last temptation" in this film isn't particularly happy in of itself), because when I saw it I just sat there dumbfounded, wondering if that was what happened, and it made me fall in love with the film even more.
    2. On another note, James's cosplay has Shakespeare's Richard II vibes, and I like that.

It's been so long since I watched the movie, but listening to this episode and hearing the way you guys described something made me think about something. Gawain's father is never mentioned, I think? I remember my impression was that Gawain was Arthur's illegitimate son with Morgan, because he has some qualities of Mordred as well (Arthur's incest baby with Morgan who is the ruin of the realm, and Gawain is Morgan's son and Arthur's heir here who, in the extended what if sequence, is the ruin of the realm).
The way you guys described the Green Knight as teasing Gawain in an almost fatherly way made me wonder if the Green Knight could be Gawain's father instead. There's nothing to base it off of, except that he could be a preexisting entity that Morgan and her witches can summon (as opposed to, perhaps, a disguise Morgan is using, though that's another possibility; at least I don't think they're ever on screen together), so it could be possible the Green Knight is a preexisting spirit of the forest and of nature, that Morgan conceived Gawain with the Green Knight a previous time she summoned him, and the Fox does tell Gawain "the Knight is someone you know" (Gawain might not literally "know" his father, but he would "know" him in the sense that they wouldn't be strangers, they have this connection). She's a witch, he's a pagan symbol, I know at least Christian demonology (witchology?) portrayed witches as sleeping with "demonic spirits" (bc evil women always be having that dang sex), I believe Christian lenses also typically portrayed pagans as kind of "conceiving children in the woods in orgies" type deals (sorta like the Wicker Man type pagans),. Since Chelsea brought up the thematic conflict between paganism and Christianity in this movie, I could see Morgan sleeping with the Green Knight as coming from these Christian views of witches/pagans in old mythology. I also think it could be fun to see Arthur as a surrogate father figure to his nephew representing Christianity (Gawain wanting to prove himself and become an honorable knight for Arthur/Christianity), and the Green Knight as a rival father figure to his biological son representing paganism (Gawain fearing the unknown and the woods, running from death and nature, and accepting it in the end and finally truly becoming an honorable knight to the Green Knight's pride).
(I know the Green Knight in the story is the lord of the castle Gawain kisses, which could make the makeout sesh a little weird in this one if that's his dad, but to be fair, the movie already diverges from the legend a fair amount and never confirms the lord is the Knight in this version. Some people also theorized that Morgan was the lord's wife who was putting moves on Gawain, and again, a rival theory might be that Gawain is Arthur and Morgan's incest baby, so there's already incesty interpretations present lol.)
Just a fun nothing theory I had, again nothing to base it off of. idk, there's a lot of interpretations for this movie for who's who and what's happening. It's really cool lol.

Great vid. So i watched the first half of this 6 months ago, i got so interested i paused the vid and watched the movie, loved it and researched the shit out of the tale also. 6 months later i see it in my suggestions with half a red viewed bar and was like oh i didnt finish that, just finished it and glad cause i didnt know there was a post credits scene.
Anyway just wanted to say, idk if Mrs Meat here mentioned it during the first half i dont think she did, but im super suprised she didnt talk more about the ending. At least that the origional version i think or the most common version at least of the story, he survives, the green knight only scratches his neck. He returns to camelot and is honest about his struggles upholding the 5 aspects of knightly code with the tests but at least passed bravery well. The knights of the round table fom then on all wore i think green sashes to honor him and the fact that anyone and every one is kinda shitty and even the great knights of the round table and other egotistical nobility are still human and can struggle and make misakes. I think thats cool. To me it goes along with the saying of like he who has no fear is not brave, he who has fear and faces it anyway is brave.
But also the director of this movie personally really thought it would be a cool idea twist of this movie to have Gwain killed by the green knight as a sudden strange end, but was talked out of it as being too far removed from the traditional point of the story so thats why he left the ending of the movie ambiguous. So that everyone includng himself could have their on headcannon. Which i like, as she said this movie is a vibe, i think in addition to the theatrical ending he should of filmed the traditional ending where knights where green sashes to honor his human mistakes, and also filmed his personal director view ending where he gets killed by the green knight and these alternate endings could appear in the dvd bonus features woulda been real cool and arty.

The way I interpreted the ending, was that the Green Knight actually does cut his head off. I think the alternate reality of the vision could be interpreted as our reality, the story we know where Gawain doesn’t die is the lie he told when he runs away. I think the point of the story was that sometimes even if you pass the test and do the right thing, in the end you will still die. I think this fits with the theme of the “green” always triumphing over all, no matter what. That’s how I saw it though, really cool seeing how you guys interpreted the ending.

Loved this!! I had a lot of thoughts after I watched the movie and it was nice to hear another perspective, especially one that is quite similar to mine!

Joel Edgerton as Falstaff in The King on Netflix was fantastic. I use to not like Joel Edgerton but then i watched Warrior with him and Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte and since then I've been a big fan

I went into this movie with no prior knowledge of the story and walked away thinking “well it was visually beautiful but I didn’t get it” - now I’m interested in giving it a second watch with more context

I remember reading this my senior year of high school and thought it was the biggest coincidence when the trailer for it came out right when we started it.

Chelsea's right. Around the time of the war of the roses is when the printing press began to be used quite a lot in England. And with Henry VIII leaving the Catholic church, there was a huge outpouring of books printed in English (and not the usual aristocratic French of the upper class at the time), which made the populace fairly literate very quickly. Makes sense that the middle age era would end at that time.

You guys should watch a ghost story. It's also directed by David Lowery. It's not a horror movie, more of like an existential journey

I'd love to see you guys review one of the many Monster High movies. I know they're not horror, but I'd be curious to see what you'd think of them since many people, myself included, loved them as kids. They're actually one of the things that got me interested in horror and the lore behind famous horror creatures. I would love to hear what you think of them, because I'm very clouded by nostalgia. Btw, I'm insanely happy the pod is back, this one was great and I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the film
