Funny enough Cham Cham was inspired by felicia from darkstalkers, so much so that her alternate colors is literally her with blue hair and white outfit reminiscent of felicia

Baiken is from Guilty Gear, and is a guest character there.
Hibiki is from Last Blade, and yes, she feels bad hurting someone; she has an alter ego that wants to kill everyone too, if given how much you progress at her game.
Amakusa is a boss from older Samsho games, and uses the orb because of a being named Ambrosia
Cham Cham is Tam Tam's younger sister from the Mayan territory, and is a fanservice at most
Gongsun Li is from the Honor of Kings mobile game (idk why she wound up there)
Warden is actually from the For Honor games as the Knights faction's vanguard vs Samurai and Vikings
Haohmaru is the main protagonist of the franchise, and you were right calling it as the "Ryu" of Samsho down from the story,
while Genjuro is his rival: A coldblooded killer who loves combat and sadism but is kind to anything other than a human being
Galford is an American surfer washed up as a ninja, but has his companion Poppy at all times even before he became a ninja
Hanzo was based off on a real life person of the same name, and is working for royalty
Ukyo is the guy who has tuberculosis, and since Japan during these times don't have a cure for TB, he's just living with it, but it gets worse per canonical franchise

Fun fact. In the old SamSho games there was actual dismemberment and deaths. Like literal fatalities.

Ukyo has always been my go-to character in these games because his style of swordsmanship most closely resembles the quick-draw style in an anime called Rurouni Kenshin. The idea of facing an opponent with your blade sheathed because you can draw it and strike faster than they can strike with their blade already drawn has always seemed badass to me.

So, for the first characters:
Baiken is familiar to you because she's from Guilty Gear. She's a guest character in this game
Hibiki is also a guest character, from Last Blade 2. She does feel bad when killing people. And in her original game, she becomes more and more of a psychopath the more you kill opponents (i.e. cut them in half), to the point of it slightly altering her ending. And she gets this trait in this game too, as you can select her more violent alter ego, as she'll have different expressions, mannerisms and dialogue.
Gongsun Li is a guest character from Honor of Kings, which is a mobile game
Warden is a guest character from For Honor.
Also, good thing you liked Cham Cham and Tam Tam, because they're siblings!

Genjurou's cards are hanafuda cards, somewhat similar to a standard card deck, but of course being Japanese a lot more complicated. I know them from the game koi-koi, as a mini-game in the Yakuza games and from the movie Summer Wars.

Haohmaru, Genjuro, and Nakoruru are what you would call the main or flagship characters. Haohmaru and Nakoruru being the most recent team to guest star in King of Fighters with Darli Dagger.

really glad you're touching on SamSho in your fighting game react journey! this more or less completes my trinity of arcade staples from my pre-teen years alongside King of Fighters and Darkstalkers, and I'm always happy when someone with fresh eyes looks at these titles! :)
played quite a bit of this back in the old arcade days, unlike most fighters this game has a "sword button" along with your usual punch-n-kick stuff, and getting hit with a sword hurts SUPER BAD, so much that a finisher can be pulled off mid-match and can unceremoniously end the round if you didn't block or dodge it, re-interpreted in this remake as downright lethal fatality-style moves... also a fair number of these characters are based on actual historical figures, just turned into cool anime people with souped up versions of their real-life fighting styles
btw my main pick is Jubei, the badass with the eyepatch and two swords near the end (and the "receipt", haha, iirc it's like a bounty note about his opponent or something like that), he's got this cool trick where he parries an enemy attack and then counters with a slash that takes a large chunk of health... very hard to pull off since you need to have a good read of what the other guy will do, but extremely satisfying when you sucker 'em in

Finally seeing you guys reacting to this, Samurai Shodown, other than what the name implied, are all about the beauty in how contrast everything were: the blood, the characters, the diversity, the gore, the setting, the culture, etc... They're all form a poetic piece in fighting games history, and the video game world too ⚔️🎴🌸

Surprised you didn't peg Warden from For Honor. Genjuro is based around an old Japanese game called Hanafuda. Ukyo is going to lose his life do to the disease you mentioned. Cham Cham and Tam Tam are siblings. Also Iroha is based on the myth of a crane who fell in love with a human she called Master. Which is why Iroha "broke the fourth wall" she sees the play as her Master.

Genjuro is actually cutting through Hanafuda playing cards and The coughing guy Ukiyo does have a form of Tuberculosis and does die from it in the future. Jubei, hanzo, Tokugawa, and the Mystic Amakusa Shiro are actually loosely based on real historical figures.

Hoo boy. Another one of my favourite franchises from my childhood, playing it in the arcades (Samurai Shodown 2 is my favourite entry). Thanks for reacting to it Ken and Beth. Sadly, due to finances and adult life I haven't played the latest entry (or most games) the last couple of years. You guys actually brought up a few good points while watching this. Going by memory, as I haven't played the series in quite a while, here are a few things (hardcore Sam Sho fans correct me if you want, please LOL):
-Baiken is a guest character in this game. She is actually from Guilty Gear. You guys saw her when you reacted to Guilty Gear Strive not too long ago.
-Amakusa is orignally a boss character from Samurai Shodown 1, hence the crazy evil laugh.
-Cham Cham is actually a copy/parody of Felicia from Darkstalkers, as she was introduced in Samurai Shodown 2, which came out around the release of Darkstalkers.
-Haomaru is basically the "Ryu" of Samurai Shodown (he's considered the main character in the series I believe, just like Ryu is the face of Street Fighter).
-Galford's dog's name is Poppy (sounds like "Puppy" when he says her name). Also he and Hattori Hanzo do the same type of ninja style (only Galford being from America, Hanzo from Japan), why Hanzo isn't too happy about defeating his friend.
-Ukyo I believe does have some type of illness (Tuberculosis as you mentioned, I think). Also the ladies really like him.
-Nakoruru does indeed apologise for killing you (Gomen Nasei means "I am sorry" in Japanese), as she doesn't enjoy violence.
-Rimururu is the younger sister of Nakoruru.
-Tam Tam is from the same tribe as Cham Cham is I recall correctly.
I'm afraid after Samurai Shodown 3 I don't remember the new characters too well.

Ah, Samurai Shodown. LOVE THIS GAME A TON, Darli and Iroha are my mains. super fun, deceptively deep, and exhilarating to watch on a competitive level. Might pick it back up when the rollback update drops.

Funny you mention tuberculosis when viewing Ukyo's special, because he actually suffers from it and can't fight for extended periods of time, or use techniques that strain his body too much.
He usually has a very calm and collected demeanor, but still fights to show his devotion to his one true love (he can't stay with her because he ain't no noble and he has a shortened lifespan because of his illness. And she's already married).
He is based on a real life historical figure of Japan - Sasaki Kojiro, one (if not the most) illustrious rival of the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. And his fighting style is based on Kojiro's techniques.

So the story of Yoshitora, he mastered 7 different swords which is why he uses them all. In the story mode as Galford, beating Yoshitora he says that Galford has only ever mastered 3 so its a testament to Yoshitora's commitment to his arts

What baiken said to the win pose saying "tell lord enma give my regards to him." great king enma is the ruler of hell from an ancient Buddhist mythology and also a demonic entity that gives judgement to anyone in the afterlife and one of the 13 judges of hell in Japan history.

Yoshitora - the man with seven swords - has seven special moves that can be used during a match, six of them using a specific sword nicknamed after one of his girlfriends, hence the flowers. The seventh sword is named after himself, and can only be used after landing the prior six specials. The super you saw is him using all seven in sequence, and if it fails to kill, it also allows you to use the seventh sword for the remainder of the round.
The seventh sword is a full screen projectile that comes off of the sword swing, if you land the sword hit raw - not as part of a prior combo - then you guarantee the projectile to hit, and this deals roughly 75% damage in a single blow. Since you’ll need to land the sixth flower or SSM Super in order to fire it, it’s basically a move with a near-guaranteed kill.
The trick is that you need to stack flowers between rounds, meaning that you have to only use certain special moves at specific times in order to push your way towards absolute oppression. He’s a fantastic character.

Amakusa (Crazy Boy) is a real historical figure who fought against the government to spread Christianity in ancient Japan.
He appears in this game is quite arranged.

I`m a fan of this series since 1993 but i think the Super Moves where better before it became 3D

I'd recommend viewing the finishers from SamSho 5 Special. They're not quite Mortal Kombat level but the general elegance of them almost makes them more disturbing in a way. (well, until you see Galford's dog Poppy slaughter someone or Basara laugh in a shower of blood.)

I'd definitely love to see Rival Schools and its sequel, Project Justice, for the next fight night. Especially since November 17th of this year is Rival Schools' 25th anniversary.

I knew they had Warden from For Honor, but I didn't realize they also had other characters from other games like Baiken from Guilty Gear!

The Basara one the soul is his dead wife that he try to save but things did not go his way. The weapon that he has is curse and stuck with for all eternity.

Since you guys are on Samsho, another one i'd suggest is Samurai Shodown 5 Special Fatalities 💀 It's the most brutal of all games in the series 🌸🎴⚔️👍

Samsho is the grandfather of the "decider" style of fighting game, everything does 100 kerbillion damages and *everything* is meaningful, spacing, timing and choice of both attack and fighter. Incredibly deliberate game.
Baiken is the Girl with No Bra. She travels the land alone and will accept no rival until she finds her true target, THAT MAN. She is also the first human being in history to weaponize bamboo mats into weapons of mass destruction and is a wanted criminal for doing so.
Hibiki is also from another game and a master of the Draw technique, wherein the opponent is felled in one hit before the sword is returned to its sheath. She suffers from split personality disorder.
Amakusa is the defacto "that boss" of Sam Sho, he was supposed to have been killed in the first game but proved so popular he was returned to the fold several times. Peerless wizard, bar none.
Cham Cham is the sister of Tam Tam. They both are masters of 1. spinning 2. Awoos.
Gongsun Li is from Honor of Kings, a STUPIDLY popular mobile game.
Warden is from For Honor.
Haohmaru is the Title Guy of Samsho, spearheading the series for most of the installations. He has also appeared in Capcom vs SNK, Battle All Stars, Soul Calibur VI, and the current KOF alongside Darli and Nakoruru as Team Shodown.
Genjuro is the Ken to Haomaru. Where Haoh goes vertical, Gen goes horizontal, Where Haoh fights with brtute force, Gen uses superior technique, where Haoh is... mostly honorable.. mostly, Gen is a ruthless machine of vengeance. They have been rivals since 2.
Galford is the quintessential Good Guy. He fights for THE JUSTICE. Not just justice, but THE JUSTICE. Poppy is indeed a thunder puppy, her puppies are also Ninjas.
Hanzo is the Greater Good Guy, he fights for just the regular justice as he is less optimistic than Galford and way more pragmatic. He is also spr srs.
Ukyo is indeed dying of tuberculosis. He is also the master of the Ultimate Draw, which is essentially the Draw but winning the lottery also.
Yoshitora is related to THAT Tokugawa, and does indeed use every sword, for which there is a flower.
Basara is the only person on planet earth to be edgier than Albert Wesker. He's also dead and accidentally killed his wife.
Kyushiro is a master of Kabuki. He is also *very* dramatic even off stage.
Shiki cannot remember why she is sad, only that she is sad. She stabbed a LOT of people. Like, alot a lot.
Mina is a reverse exorcist. She sucks up all the bad juju. This also means she will die horribly and have extra crappy bad luck all the time.
Nakoruru is a non reverse exorcist, she uses her ainu magic to fight evil, accompanied by Mamahaha, her trusty spirit guardian. Also in tons of other games.
Rimururu is Nako's sister and has transformed over time from "other nakoruru" into an ice mage zone type fighter.
Kazuki is the fire brother. He likes yelling.
Sogetsu is the water brother. He likes lecturing.
Charlotte is perhaps the most annoying Zone character in human history. Try hitting her. Go ahead, try.
Darli is a pirate and master ship builder. She has degrees in Naval Engineering and Turning Stuff into Hamburger.
Shizumaru is the son of one of the bosses of the series and constantly being attacked by people seeking revenge.
Riuxiang is a Turtle Dragon priestess and investigating why Amakusa keeps breaking everything. Again.
Tam Tam is a mayan prince-shaman, and Amakusa and a couple of other wizards keep stealing his stuff.
Earthquake is the leader of some evil Ninjas and master of the Earth Shaking Fart. Yes that is the actual name.
Iroha is a Crane. A sexy Crane.
Wan Fu is a King of the Mountain. The pillar is the last structure of his first palace, which he lost due to arrogance.
Jubei is the chief freelance justicar of the current Shogunate. He is tasked with bringing lawbreakers to justice. He's also supposed to bring Yoshitora home.
Yashamaru is a half Tengu aka Demon Crow. He seeks justice for his slain father.

I missed the days when SS had Fatalities I loved those so much even if they were on 2d 🤣🤣 Kazuki still the best 🙌🏽 and that Kid with the fan and green eyes has the spirit of his father's power
