Developer Team Ninja returns once more with its excellent combat design - this time taking its in-house engine to the open road. Rise of the Ronin presents a huge landscape to freely explore, all built to suit PS5 as a sole platform target. However even with the dedicated PS5 development, the game's frame-rate has issues on all three of its modes - as Tom covers in detail.

Ghost of Tsushima was Triple-AAA game, which have more budget (to spend more $$$ on optimizing & polishing)
Also, they used much stronger optimizations since PS4 console was weak at that time, so they done super high optemzations
While in Rise of the Ronin, it's AA game & they did meh optemzations since they rely heavily on stronger PS5 hardware
But overall, any Samurai game is welcome, might improve a little bit with updates (only time will tell)

It’s crazy the level of optimization and performance first party vs third party get out of the consoles. I know team ninja is essentially AA and have like a 2-3 year turnaround for games, so that adds context. But still Spider-Man 2 runs locked at 60fps, has a higher base resolution, better upscaling, more and better RT. Such a vast difference. Even ghosts of Tshushima runs at essentially locked 60fps at 1800p resolution.

With the extra gpu horsepower I can see the lower bounds being pushed to from 810p to 1080p then upscaled to a more 4K style image via PSSR.
In the RT mode I wouldn't be surprised if Team Ninja could just toggle a few extra settings to on for a more robust RT image.

It’s not really exactly like Sekiro tho. I was playing that game to get ready for this one. I would say it’s even slightly different than Wo Long.
There is actually a small window of time you have to deflect BEFORE the attack actually hits you. In Sekiro you deflect AS the attack hits you. It really does feel different in action too. Took some getting used to.
As far as the back and forth goes it is slightly different as well. It definitely has very similar rhythms and timing, but the way depleted health increases stagger in Sekiro is one major difference.
I haven’t tried Nioh yet but sorely need to. Deflecting is a big part of RotR, but it also has a “Blade Flash” technique that allows you to regain stamina after a swing by cleaning the blood off your sword. (Really cool in action). It’s more about just pressing your enemy and using combat styles that counter theirs, while deflecting when needed.
The amount of combat styles and weapon types in this game can seem overwhelming at 1st but once you get into it, it’s AWESOME. You are encouraged to switch to weapons and styles on the fly, depending on your opponent’s weapon and style. After a little practice it becomes fairly intuitive and the controls can be pretty seamless. (Which to me is paramount in a game like this)
TLDR; this game is its own thing and somewhat unlike Sekiro or Wo Long. While the open world wasn’t the “best” in execution, I found the story and its historical context to be very intriguing. Then you add SICK combat and an overall GENUINE atmosphere, and Rise of the Ronin is one of the best samurai/ninja titles I’ve had the pleasure of playing 😊 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Called it since announcement. Rise and DD2 were bound to be those types of ambitious mid-generational titles that would require a mid-generational console upgrade to really shine. Now that it appears as though the PS5 Pro is going to release as early as this holiday season or beginning of 2025, it all falls into place. That's also one of the reasons I believe Ubisoft scheduled the release of AC Codename Red for around February or March of 2025. They want it to be well optimized for the PS5 Pro at launch the way HZD and AC Origins were for PS4 Pro and XB1X. For their time, mind you. Back then, checkerboard rendering and dynamic resolution were state of the art technologies and it was considered a breakthrough for consoles to deliver a locked 30 fps with checkerboard or Dynamic 4K.

I feel like 900-1080p at 45-60fps with RT on is not actually so bad especially for an open world title
The graphics mode being 1152-1512p at 30fps seems low, I would have expected 1800-2160p at 30fps

16x anisotropic filtering doesn't cost more than 1% performance these days. It's baffling that game devs still leave it at 4x.

It doesn't cost much when you're not bandwith constrained. Usually on PC you aren't since GPU VRAM and System RAM don't share bandwith. On console bandwith is much scarcer. That's why it is pretty much the norm that console games have bad anisotropic filtering even today. It's kinda like textures not having performance impact unless you're out of VRAM.

We're at least one console generation away from RT being viable. I don't know why they even bother to include it, the added visuals don't nearly overcome the framerate drops that it brings.

  • @asimb0mb
    @asimb0mb 개월 전

Even with my VRR display (LG CX), the performance mode is far from ideal, especially in cities. Idk, the framerate drops are very obvious for some reason. Feels like it's dipping below 50fps all the time.
