Ansel and Rachel's voices are so perfectly matched here. And, wow, the visuals of the new movie make the 1961 version look like they were just filming the stage play. There's nothing like a great-looking movie that is all about design, lighting and sets, not CGI. The movie feels alive, real and vibrant.
Agree with the lovely harmonious voices here! However, for those of us who have watched the original a zillion times, starting as kids, it’ll hold a special irreplaceable part in our hearts. See, sometimes the lack of detailed surroundings allows one’s imagination to develop and really delve deeper into the story and people. Cause it’s not all just provided for us. And, respectfully, I feel the acting was more skilled in the original. Obviously, a vantage point from a different generation here… Sigh. I’ll never ever EVER forget that poignant last scene in the original, breathtaking.
I do not understand why so many critics are bashing Ansel Elgort's performance. I think his Tony is excellent: Beautiful voice, amazing dancer, and if his performance is not as vibrant as some of the other actors it's because his character is more introspective than previous incarnations.
Ugh, I felt that. I literally stayed to hear the epilogue which is always a treat because it is a recap of all the music, a bit of what an overture should be but it waits to the end to give it to us. The original 1961 version's best number was America. But for the remake, I gotta roll with Tonight. Also, does Ansel Elgort take up climbing as a hobby? He's good at that.
A lot of great films disappoint at the box office. The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Willy Wonka, Blade Runner, The Thing, Reservoir Dogs, Fight Club, Blade Runner 2049, First Man, to name a few. But they're like wine. They get more appreciation with age.
@@JustPippaNY You’re absolutely right, but we’re talking about a Steven Spielberg picture in 2021. Very very good ❤
Beautiful!
Okay...here's my upcoming Snow White
as she should be
The original 1961 version's best number was America.
But for the remake, I gotta roll with Tonight.
Also, does Ansel Elgort take up climbing as a hobby? He's good at that.
He said in an interview that he loves climbing
I kind of fell in love with Officer Krupke this time. The song, not the officer.
Please Keep making movies mr. Spielberg!
You should watch the Fabelmans. He can still tell a story
It’s very sad that a world cinema masterpiece like this went wrong at the box office
Orson Welles was a 25yo rookie director in 1941; Quentin Tarantino was 29yo rookie director in 1992; David Fincher had only directed one terrific movie before Fight Club (Se7en; Alien³ was not memorable and The Game was awful). What's more, West Side Story is a well-known Broadway classic for over 60 years. I don't understand this box office failure
@@asterisco9035 there's also the matter of the global pandemic still going on. A lot of my friends have expressed interest in seeing the film, but are still hesitant to go out.
@@JustPippaNY I respectfully disagree. The pandemic did not deter people from going to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home that has grossed very well all over the world, not just in the US. Specularly, Spielberg’s West Side Story grossed little worldwide
@@asterisco9035 Yeah it's really sad. Really anything that wasn't an action blockbuster this year got screwed, and even then so did some of those movies.
