The melody of 1:32 when Mirabel is singing is the same melody that Isabella sings in her solo during “We don’t talk about Bruno” subconsciously telling the audience, THIS is the moment Isabelle’s dream life is being promised to her.

Also when isabela sings that part in “we don’t talk about Bruno” her voice is super high, where as in this song it is fairly deeper. I think it was symbolic of her being out of her vocal range, or her being uncomfortable with her “perfect” image.

And at the same time help both of them build a strong bond. I also love when isabella says “changing minds” mirabel says “you’ve changed mine” because at the beginning of the movie until their argument, before this song, mirabel thinks isabella is a selfish gifted child but when isabella got to open up, mirabel understood isabella’s situation and helped her with it.

She took out her frustration on mirabel because mirabel was the one who “messed up” the perfect things that made abuela happy. Sure, it isn’t perfect, but who needs perfect?? You just created something!!! You just pulled *something* out of *nothing* and that is incredible!!!

I know someone’s already commented this somewhere but I just wanna restate- that Disney did a really good job in this movie with no harmful stereotypes. There might be some that are there that are subtle but I haven’t noticed any, and I think it’s really nice that Disney didn’t make Isabela cut her hair or rip her dress or lose her ‘femininity’ throughout the song. Being stereotypically feminine wasn’t the problem at all, it was the pressure that was put on her. I also appreciate that Luisa can be super strong AND feminine without being portrayed as dumb like lots of other media portrays strong women.

This☝️ Women with muscles or with glasses used to be portrayed as manly or geek, but I'm glad to see the stereotypes are starting to break. Luisa here is not less feminine than Dolores, Isabela or Mirabel, and her voice isn't overly low-pitched like bad film makers would do. And Isabela that we first see as the cringy golden child perfect princess just changes the standards around her without having to change entirely as imperfection is part of her identity. This Disney might not be the most complex one and sure doesn't have a lot of layers of understanding but it is so refreshing to see more representation from a company who used to present very little options or representation and by doing so, did harm to the way we grew up

The way she says "Jacarandas" is so magic for me. As a portuguese speaker, it sounds so familiar, and yet so unique (since spanish speakers apparently talk the "ja" as a "ha"), i always feel a bit happy when i hear a familiar word on a movie, even if it is spanish and not portuguese, just the fact that i can recognize vaguely the word makes me feel "home".
Even tho it is based on Colombia, i get this feeling of "home" throughout the entire movie, since it is really close to Brazil and some aspects of their culture are kinda similar to ours. I haven't felt so represented by an animation since Rio came out, and i'm thinking about learning spanish beacause of Encanto.
(Btw, this isn't me trying to make cultural appropriation here. I know this representation isn't aimed at me, and i know that although Brazil and Colombia have their similarities, they are different cultures. I just have to say I love how Disney treated each character in this movie. The total lack of a villain plot is a masterful stroke that is echoing Pixar and Ghibli films and it's definitely pushing them in the right direction. They consistently kept the approach of introducing a seemingly negative character only to redeem/explain them later, first with Bruno, then Isabella and then Abuela herself. And this works so well to hammer down the theme of the movie without shoving it in your face or being patronizing about it. Everyone is flawed, everyone has bad days, everyone is imperfect, everyone is special.

That being said, the overall story is a little weak in comparison to other films they've made. Like compared to Raya, which had a strong A-B-C narrative, but weak characters, Encanto has wonderfully fleshed out characters that FEEL like individuals but they don't really do all that much, there's not much of a driving narrative. Honestly I feel like they have missed a ton of potential to (especially when you look at all the stuff that was cut) to really expand and show off the powers and just what they CAN do when pushed to the limits in some kind of adventure.
Like now that they've established the characters, how the magic works, etc, there's a serious adventure story waiting out there for Isabela, Luisa, Camilo and Dolores (with Mirabel being the grounded center) to really step up from just being the grandkids and into adults.

    • @girlwithanaccent7533
      @girlwithanaccent7533 2 년 전 +101

@@Stingra87 I'm actually not bothered by the scale of the story in this particular case. Encanto is obviously a character study, and as such, I don't think they needed to go big. Keeping it intimate and tightly connected to the characters is what allowed them to explore them as deeply as they did. Even the fact that they keep Bruno in rather than send him out of the picture works, because the story is always wrapped around the characters, it's tight and simple and that gives the writers the free space to flesh out their personalities. This cast is very big. In order to give each character their time to shine, the story cannot take a big chunk of the real state. Even the songs are each and every one tied directly to the characters and fulfills an important narrative purpose. There is no "Ice song" or "Shiny" song in here. Each piece of this movie is put there very deliberately for a reason. Raya had a clear structure, but both the character treatment and the pacing were supremely aweful. It was clear the writers didn't know what to do with their massive world-building cache and decide it to stuff it all together to the detriment of any kind of emotional impact in the story. It's like a textbook example on the hero's journey and the 3-act story but never goes beyond that, a textbook. You could literally strip every single character from Raya and replace it with any other character and the story would work exactly the same because they are basically props without a personality. Raya could be a child, or an adult man, or an old lady. Or Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter or Marty McFly. The plot would be exactly the same. You could shave off her entire cast of secondary characters, and the plot would be exactly the same. In Encanto, every single family member (except for maybe Camilo) has a role in moving the plot forward, you remove any of them and the story halts.

I feel like their ages play a lot into this. Isabela is 21, and mirabel is 15. We know that they get their gifts when they are five. And the lines "You just seem like your life's been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes" and "all I know are the blossoms you grow" show how their ages play into it. Isabela is 6 years older than mirabel, meaning that Isabela had had her gift already when mirabel was born, meaning that all she really did know was Isabela after she got her gift, when everyone began to think of Isabela as perfect. Mirabel never knew how Isabela was like before she got her gift and she truly always thought that Isabela had always been 'perfect' because that was actually all she knew about Isabela.

Her memory kicks in when I'm already taking my mom's place in the household after my parent's divorce. She didn't really have a perception of me as a child as a result. I personally relate to both Isabella and Luisa as a parentified child who needed to be good at everything.

It’s really good too that in 1:32 we can see Mirabel realizing that! The first parts of each of her line was “You just seem..” and “All I know..” which was what she thought about Isabela because she never really got to know her before her gift. The fact that Mirabel’s verse here also parallels Isabela’s verse in We Dont Talk About Bruno is brilliant. And then she says “But It’s awesome to see..” because she actually gets to see the real Isabela this time.

Out of all the gifted Madrigals, I feel like Abuela knew that Isabela’s gift was the least helpful to the community. Based on what we see in the film, she only used her power for plants that are not crops, so even there, she couldn’t or didn’t use her power in that way either. This is why I feel like she was the most pressured to be beautiful and perfect, because Abuela didn’t want anyone to think a Madrigal wasn’t an asset to the community. She became a show instead of an actual person. That’s why the pressure of getting married was on her as well, even if Dolores is the same age as her. If she couldn’t be “useful” with her powers, the next best thing would be to produce more “useful” Madrigals. Not to mention her being the first grandchild (and first child of Julieta), so Abuela wouldn’t want the community to think badly of her. Just a thought!
Edit: to those saying she could grow other plants all along, yes, I concede, but I also think she didn’t even know she could do those until What Else Can I Do. Someone said that maybe at first, she could only do flowers, which ties in to what I think Abuela saw in her.
Edit #2: to those saying Camilo’s gift was the most useless, I don’t think so. He could take the place of anyone in the community, be tall if things needed to be reached, be small if he needed, and his appearance isn’t the only thing that he has going for him. His body can morph into the physical abilities of others as well.

In Bruno's song she sings that the life of her dreams would be promised to her and her power would be about growing plants, and this was sung after a list of bad events, which Mirabel thought of as just her constantly being lucky and perfect when it could mean that the "ideal" life wasn't what she wanted or that her happier imperfect life would come to be. Mirabel always felt overshadowed by her "perfect," "golden-child" sister who commanded so much attention, while Isabella felt pressure from her family to be perfect and get married, and likely envied Mirabel who avoided much of that due to her lack of a gift.

    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp
    Something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
    Flor de mayo
    By the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
    Strangling figs (big, big)
    Hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
    I'm so sick of pretty
I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go!
    A hurricane of jacarandas (whoo)
    Strangling figs (go)
    Hanging vines (grow)
Palma de Cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, whoo!
I'm coming through with tabebuia (she's coming through with tabebuia)
    Making waves (making waves)
    Changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?

i love how this part connects with bruno's vision; he said her power would grow, and now she's learning she can make more than what she made for years, she's getting her perfect life because now she doesn't have to put on a smile everyday to be the picture perfect image that her family bestowed upon her, as well as the bond between her and mirabel getting stronger over how the family (+ mirabel) treated isabella because of the image she had to put up.

Inside the context of the scene alone it reads very much like "how deeply ingrained is this idea that only brings me misery?", but I've read people taking it as sort of a "why, grandma?" moment, tending to "why does it exist in the first place?". An insteresting take, if you ask me, that would make it that Isabela of all people is the first to question in a way that could bring the generational trauma to light, but in the end she's still human and embrancing the good feeling she likely never had before or haven't in a long time spoke louder

This song and the character of Isabela really meant a world to me. I grew up feeling like I should never dissapoint my family, like I was suppossed to be always there for them no matter what my feelings were and like I was suppossed to be the perfect girl (not really because of my parents, they're great and really loving and caring). I always tend to avoid conflit at any cost, people pleaser type. To me this song means it's OK not to be what people expects, it's funny and pleasant to let it go sometimes and you can't always please everybody

Disney has been breaking that standard Disney Princess mold (waiting for love and almost immediately getting married) in recent years.
I think they tried that with Frozen, by making the prince (Hans) the villain. But I honestly like what they did in Encanto better. Instead of making the guy (Mariano) evil they made a character (Isabela) that didn’t hate him but wasn’t interested in marrying him.
I also like when Dolores mets Mariano and he says “Let’s get married.” Dolores replies with “Slow down.” it makes it a bit more realistic.

Letting go of resentment can be very powerful and even life-changing. Each character grows in this movie, a really top notch production.
