I saw the movie, my jaw was honestly on the floor because how good Rachel Zegler was in this movie. I was like "WTF? LIKE WHERE DID THIS COME FROM SPIELBERG???" I'm really really really happy for Rachel, for a debut acting performance this is fantastic for her. She IS Maria! And as someone who have loves the 1961 movie, imo Spielberg's movie is superior in just about every way
She had my attention when she's doing cover songs of A Star Is Born. I'm glad she got the chance to shine with her acting abilities. She was phenomenal in this movie. I can't wait to see what else she does in the future. She's so talented, she's Hollywood's next superstar

This movie is a masterpiece. I watched it on the 8th and I can't wait to see it again. Even though I like both versions, Steven Spielberg truly perfected every aspect that lacked in the 1961 movie and made something truly spectacular with this new version.
Saw this yesterday for the second time. I cannot get enough of this Tony and Maria. As a fan of the first movie I was very skeptical of this one but couldn't wait to see it. I'm so glad I did. The way these two look at each other and sound together is breathtaking. I honestly had no idea Ansel could sing. This version of the movie gives Tony's character more depth and I love it! Don't listen to the negative reviews. You have to see it for yourself.
This is not a remake. It is an adaptation and it's bloody brilliant. Elements from the 1961 I prefer but over all this was far superior. The added dialogue, the scenes... all added depth to the characters and relevance.
@@lorildiamond4987 So I haven't watched it since it came out in the cinema but of the top of my head there was the added dialogue between Maria and Antonio when they first met, the scene where Anita sees Bernados body and the shift of Anybody being trans instead of tomboy. There was so much more but I would reccomend watching the original as a point of comparison if you're interested.
While my pick for the best actress of the year is Kristen Stewart in "Spencer", there's no denying what a powerful debut Rachel Zegler makes as Maria. It'll be wonderful to see where she goes from here.

Just got back from 2nd viewing at a different theater, I saw it 1st at El Capitan in Hollywood, today , local AMC theater. See this in the format it was created for. Phenomenal!
Some of the reviews say that Ansel falls flat in performance and that have don't have good chemistry. I don't see it though his voice is amazing. And from I see I think they have great chemistry. I mean look how there looking at each other.

I was not a fan of the remake and yet I must say , Elgort and Zegler are the reasons to see the W.S.S. remake. Amazing chemistry and they truly did embody "Tony and Maria' beautifully. I had no idea either could sing as well as they did.
Ansel was the reason I bought the movie. What a wonderful surprise when he started singing Somethings Coming. He was the perfect Tony and I've loved the original since I was a little girl in 1961. I was unsure about the remake but Ansel was the reason I kept watching the movie. I had never heard of him before. Now I'm a fan.

As good as the 1961 version was, it had some shortcomings. Richard Beymer and Natalie Woods looked too old to be moonstruck teenagers and the dubbing meant that their singing voices didn't match their speaking voices. And, yes, Natalie Woods accent ("Wan leetle eench!"). The new version fixes those problems. Elgort and Zegler look like teenagers and they do their own singing (and they sound great). And they have chemistry! And the additional character background (which is something I normally hate) actually makes the film better. We understand why Tony is staying away from the Jets and why he so readily latches on to Maria. The fact that the neighborhood is under slum clearance makes the battle between the two gangs extra poignant because we know both sides already lost the fight to Robert Moses before the film even started. Anyway, if you haven't seen the film on the big screen, you should.

Rachel Zegler is such a compelling singer that I paid to see her sing Leonard Bernstein's spectacular music accompanied by the New York Philharmonic orchestra in in the wonderful 2021 West Side Story musical nine times.
Many people say this remake is unnecessary. Well the original movie was great but remember the fact that the Latino characters were heavily whitewashed including Maria. Spielberg's approach for this movie is for more accurate, more close and more authentic adaptation to the source material and he pulled it off very well. I applaud Spielberg for casting real Latino actors to play Latino characters in this movie. I liked Natalie Wood as Maria but I found Rachel Zegler's performance to be better. This IS the best West Side Story adaptation imo. This remake exists to fix the mistake of what the original movie had. Yes, the 1961 movie is a classic but it can't escape of the whitewashing problem the movie had
Yeah, and it's not only an improvement in representation but also there's so much context to what was happening that you understand every character and their choices more

There's no rule in West Side Story where Maria should be white or black, just have her be a Latino character like she always do is fine and Rachel Zegler is half latino whereas Natalie Wood is fully white caucasian person with no Latin blood whatsoever and this is a harmless movie after all, it's a musical. It wouldn't offend any people
